It can be a little difficult to play up themes of a savage, unforgiving frontier without playing into racist stereotypes regarding indigenous people, especially in a specifically American context. It can even harder when you want to turn what was geographically Mexico into one giant Cormac McCarthy Doom level. Of course, necessity is the mother of invention. How do you dodge the potentially slightly racist undertones of implying that every Mexican person is a flesh-eating demon? Easy. Keep Mexico as an actual place, and just put it somewhere else. Congrats, Mexico. The Doom level just became unmistakable as a tumescent version of the American southwest, and you just graduated to being Farum Azula. It’s better not to overthink the mechanics of how this works. Since Canada and the midwest are overflowing with Caucasoids, they deserve no such mercy.
There’s an old 4chan post I read a long time ago about some guy who had a PhD in philosophy, but found himself working at Subway. He reasoned that he was probably one of the top experts in the world on the works of Husserl. When his much younger coworkers asked why he was working at Subway at his age, he would just lie and said he spent time in prison. Who knows if any of it was true, but obviously, it left an impact on me.
The next chapter is going to be a long one, I think. I want to do some one-offs in the meantime, and I think I want to move GUE over to a dedicated website, so I can release pages individually and at the intended viewing size. I feel awful making people wait over a month with zero updates. Or maybe they don’t mind, and I just make myself feel anxious? Either way, I don’t like it. Stay tuned.
