Video Premiere tomorrow: Is it worth recording to tape for electronic dance music?

Hey everybody,

I spend the last days before the end of the year making dance music, as I have actually started to miss going out quit a bit. At least this way I can dance in  my studio. In the process I have re-evaluated a few tried and true things, and listened a lot to my whole signal chain. Having upgraded from a four channel interface to a multitrack one I could finally track to digital and tape at the same time, and the comparisons where interesting. So I made this video comparing the digital and tape recordings, and weigh in with my opinion after a direct A/B.

See you tomorrow!

Cheers,

Hainbach

Hi! Thanks for another inspiring - and very relevant - video. I listened on a random laptop through Sennheiser HD-25-1's, so the bass response was good, but I guess youtube and the laptop's soundcard took its toll on the quality compared to your studio... Interestingly, I preferred B throughout the tracks. Contrary to your resume in the end, I found the kick to be a tiny bit more pronounced in recording B... and well, kicks and bass response is... important :) But I'd say the difference was absolutely minimal on my listening conditions, and I'm still debating with myself whether I was biased from the first track. Thinking of the otherwise fully analog signal chain in your setup adding all the character to the sound, I would personally (in my tiny home studio) track analog equipment digitally.

6 min really bomb !!!
