Composing for Theatre on the Modular

I still hear that modular synthesizers are fartboxes, can do only bleeps and bloops or are mainly a source of happy accidents. With the tools available today, its easy to use a modular to precisely score what you have in your mind, and shape just like you would on a multitrack workstation. The added advantages are the joy of hands on control, the sounds of analog circuitry and modulation send to many signals, creating a more cohesive mix even before hitting tape. Recall is of course only possible as long as you keep the patch, or get really exact about manual patch-sheets.

Fantastic. I've had my modular (in various iterations and arrangements) for ten years now, and at times it does seem like it's just a fancy, expensive noisemaker. I'm so happy to read about and watch (and listen to) your music in context and serving an external purpose. One question -- you recorded the piece to tape, ok. So is that what you took with you to the rehearsal? A reel of tape? Or did you transfer that to WAV or something that is easier to deal with on site?

Glad to hear that!

This is a great segment! It’s the sort of presentation that enables others to begin to imagine doing something they never imagined doing before.
