Foils got his big golden disc out, so you know he means business. He's doing an ace job of deflecting light to his eyes under very dark conditions. We're impressed. It wasn't always like that though....When he first bought that giant holy communion, myself and Hog used to secretly laugh at him trying to bounce light here and there and it making no difference (we weren't using the right lighting conditions).
But Foil had the last laugh. Little did we know he was biding his time, like a really good ten pin bowler who wanted to just barely win a match in order not ruin the date he was on but retain his pride nonetheless- he knew just when to strike. That's an appalling metaphor, could I please ask that it be struck from the record? Anyway, with light being an all new important aspect in this post gig filming world we work in, the disk is front and centre, and foil is golden boy.
Todays sketch is less funny than.. relatable? Its strange when your writing comedy and sometimes you find yourself saying "no, that joke is disrupting the flow, take it out!" or "the humour is in the rhythm, it doesn't matter what's being said" but that's the script vibe yo!
We have a few takes in the bag and decide to see what it looks like. We're using Foils Amplifier to play it. The amplifier is a staple of the office, reliable, sturdy and probably older than some of the people reading this diary entry. We used to bring it to gigs, and since we break most of the stuff we haul around the country, its a miracle it's survived this long. Although , now I do recall, it nearly had a premature death when Hog once threatened to throw it into the river in Galway, "For a laugh". I got so giddy at how annoyed Foil would get, that he nearly did it. Yikes. AAAAANYWAY, the amp is playing back the sketch, with some random sound effect accidently turned on, and guess what, it kind of.. works? SO, I'm excited about doing the soundscape for this one, its definitely a challenge.
We're learning lines, and Hog and myself keep messing up lines, Hog stumbles over the same one on three occasions and is now laughing so much we can't continue. Foil reminds us we're under time pressure, which as you can guess, makes things worse.
Costume time, let's do this.
We are searching for the monk hoods, and remember we left them in vicar street, oops. However, much like a very good ten pin bowler who's just missed the strike and is under a considerable amount of pressure in a game, we find a spare......Was that any better?
This is a "one take wonder" sketch and its super fast paced, which means we screw it up a dozen times before getting it right. I'm the main culprit here, but then again, I do have the hardest bit, well that's what I'm saying, because it's my diary. Still we manage to finish bang on time just as squeaky hoover man arrives. Job done!
So, I'm leaving from the office with Hog, it's a Friday and I'm in good form - the sketch is filmed and I'm off for two blissful days in the Dublin sunshine... beer and good times await. I realise I've forgotten the edit, no problem. So out I hop from the car and dash into the office to get it. I'm back in the car, door closed, in the driver seat. I get a terrible feeling. Something catches my eye. I look in the rear view mirror and SCREAM. Hog is in the backseat of my car. Smiling. I've seen it in Horror movies. But now I'm living it.
"JAYSUS!!!" WHAT THE F&^%&%^kkkkk!!!
He laughs his ass off, and confesses he thought about staying there till I got home. That would be commitment. Here's the thing with having Hog as a co-worker, anything is possible. However, much like a ten pin bowling player (this is the last I swear)... MUCH like a ten pin bowler who has left pins either side of the the lane after their first shot, he had to split.
sorry.
