One String Shredding Sounds Insane! WW377

One string shredding sounds INSANE when hunks like Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, and Eddie Van Halen do it... and you can, too!!!! GET INTO IT!

In this video, I'm gonna show you all the most important things you gotta know to ascend and descend all over the neck while shredding like a real magnum shredder. We're gonna cover a sick practice lick you can use to hone your skills (and toss into your solos), then talk about the left hand and picking hand fundamentals you need to get more better. I'm also gonna borrow (I.E. STEAL) a great tip about shortening up your pick strokes that I got (STOLE) from the amazing Rick Graham (thanks Rick, you legend!!!!). Everything you need, nothing you don't!

Snag the practice tracks, TAB, and Guitar Pro files below!

What do you want to learn and work on next time?

One String Shredding Sounds Insane! WW377

Dear Uncle Ben, In this video, I noticed that, for example, at 9-7-5 and 10-12-14, you extend your middle finger (while rotating your hand), instead of using your ring finger. I also observed in other videos (like This will improve your Picking, 5-7-9 on the D and G string) that you seem to prefer using your middle finger for similar positions. My question is: Is it generally or in most cases better to use the middle finger (so that the pinky can play more flexibly)? And to avoid confusion in muscle memory, should one try to play similar patterns the same way every time? I would greatly appreciate a detailed response.

Great lessons! I have it down but for some reason you play it ALot cleaner than me lol

Super cool what’s chords can this go with?

Mark Cañas

Great workout. Good way to practice hand sync in this kind of lick is to pick first of the three (or six) notes and hammer on/pull of the rest.

Erno Tossavainen

Excellent single string workout! Definitely pushes your picking to the max.

I love this! If you're looking for suggestions I'm always down for shred licks and ideas.

This is great! One variant that you can do to practice your eye-pick-left hand coordination is to do one ascending and one descending (134, go up to next position and do 421, etc). It forces you to anticipate where your pinky (especially) needs to be.

Your Ying Yang Milkshake etude WW is excellent for additional one string shred patterns. I play that daily for warming up and keeping the buzz saw picking going!

Nice, just what I was looking for. My sync is OK, but position changes are hard. Also - backing track is groovy as hell for this one! I kind of just want to keep jamming over it. (Any chance for an upload of that track, without the exercise on top? :))
