I agree with everything that Michele says. I also wanted to add that I think Dean uses his humour to deal with all the crap they see. I think it's part of the front he often puts up.

Sorry. I often write VERY LONG comments. Especially lately. Sorry!! Oh my. They are so young here!! Babies. Oh, my heart. I keep forgetting how much time has gone by and how they've grown. Both the characters, and the actors. Literally - lol. And figuratively. But it's also very nice to relive the early days. About this episode. Wow. This just ramps it all up again. The story is definitely filling out now and it's not just Monster of the Week anymore. Dean and Sam have a habit of making us have all kinds of Feels. They just do. Poor Dean. You're right. He just wants his family back together again. Hunting things as a family. Poor Sam. He just wants a normal life, where he can pursue something other than hunting. They see things differently, but siblings usually do. Sam seems able to be okay away from his family for long periods of time. Not even communicating with them. Dean seems to not be okay being away from his family. Well, we can imagine why they might be different on that. Or wait to find out. It's so hard to be careful with what I say in my comments. To notice if something is over the spoiler line. I hope you don't get spoiled on these character things. It means so much more to find out. But, me, and others, will likely do it anyway if you say something that triggers our need to "correct" you in the characters' defense. lol Everyone comments on how noisy the boys are when they're climing the elevater shaft. I would have thought they'd be much more quiet. Well, they're still learning. It was interesting to find out that the Big Bad Demon knows that John is hunting him, and is apparently worried enough to try and take him out. Nice to see John with the boys. Too bad it was so short. But we get to see them together and this helps fill some things. The "Sir" is done for a reason. Dean must have been able to "get" why John says they need to stay away from each other after what happened here. Safer for their dad. And them, I guess. But, knowing Dean, he's more worried about his dad. The demons here were not the same as what killed their monther. You're right about that. Totally different. Johns truck wasn't parked there the whole time. It wasn't there when Dean parked the care because John hadn't shown up yet. You heard him say that he got there just as the girl flew out the window. John likely parked in front when he saw the car, and he knew the boys were there. JDM was pretty busy on other jobs around the time of this episode, so maybe they originally meant for him to be in the episode more. The budget for the first season was so ridiculously small, that I'm always amazed at how much they were able to do with this show despite that. Special effects alone would likely cost a lot for this type of show. The boys do have some differences in styles. Dean does take it seriously, even if it looks like he doesn't. He just tries to balance things, since it's thier life. Gotta try to live while doing it. Especially since any day could be your last. I see Dean as trying to find fun where and when he can. And to lessen the seriousness when he can, because it's easier that way. But it can come across as, I don't know. Making him look bad. That's just how I see it. I always come to Dean's defense. Sam seems like the serious, studious type. Someone who'd stay home to study over going to a party. With Sam back in the gig, he probably is able to let Sam take on most of the Research part of the job. They each probably have strengths in different areas. Sam is good with the data and research/info stuff and Dean seems good with tech gadgets and in evidence finding - noticing things and seeing patterns. They both seem good at the general lore, but would have to research things they haven't come across yet. I expect that things would be easier for each, in having them work together. Maybe they can take on more "jobs" and more complex ones now. Plus, it's a lot safer working with someone. Dean was able to do the job alone, but I'm sure he had to do it differently, as 's solo act. Hed have to find a way to do it with the strengths and talents he has. I'm sure Sam would find some issues himself if he tried doing it alone.
