172 - AOL Whitstant Messenger (feat. Colette Shade) [Whit’s Endless Summer #41]

Colette Shade [Y2K: How the 2000’s Became Everything (essays on a future that never was)] joins the lads in Odyssey for some eXtreme adventures in cliques, Y2K paranoia, and the Odyssians’ forever war with the people of Rakistan. Topics include Y2K aesthetics, being jumpscared by John Avery Whittaker, and what it means to have nostalgia for an optimistic techno future that never came to pass.

Y2K: How the 2000’s Became Everything (essays on a future that never was) (CLICK HERE TO GET YOUR COPY!): In Y2K, one of our most brilliant young critics Colette Shade offers a darkly funny meditation on everything from the pop culture to the political economy of the period. By close reading Y2K artifacts like the Hummer H2, Smash Mouth’s “All Star,” body glitter, AOL chatrooms, Total Request Live, and early internet porn, Shade produces an affectionate yet searing critique of a decade that started with a boom and ended with a crash.

Comments

I was really enjoying this episode until just before the 2 hour and 15 minutes mark. That's when cinnamon raisin bagels were slandered, and frankly I cannot abide that.

Leo Zachary Dickenson

Every 10 years or so, The Simpsons jump a new shark.

Luckie

Typo in the description, “Fmaily” in the link to the FotF article

Nat W

Shit yes, I was in basic training with some fucked up people.

Josh James

Fun fact, the way they "solved" the Y2K bug was to put in a pivot year. I.e. anything before 30 (or 20, or 40 depending on the mainframe) is 20xx, anything after is 19xx. This is a particular bugaboo of mine because IBM is selling an LLM product to convert COBOL to Java, and fuckups associated with that are my parlay bet on how the world ends. NYC Parking meters got hit by a time delayed Y2K bug back in 2020 and stopped taking credit cards.

Ijon Tichy

As someone who grew up Unitarian, it's nice to see some representation

Agents Miskatonic

Oh you got Darren Nicols for the interstitial. Fun.

James Cézanne-Taipale

One time, I used the lyrics to Thursday's Jet Black New Year as an away message to count down ten days to the end of a semester

Jonathan V. Cann

Damn that interstitial has my focus snatched and my fancies positively tickled, TICKLED I TELL YOU!!

Toby

I really appreciated the fellow UU representation too.

Harrison Hapner

(Mild vague spoilers) Also me, vibrating at a frequency that can shatter glass: AJ doesn’t know… AJ doesn’t know who arem was originally planned to be… AJ doesn’t know the pedo jokes are rhyming…

LogalogJack

Important questions about the interstitial: is Alistair single and is he vers

LogalogJack

Really hoping that every major villain in this show goes out by blowing themselves up in the tunnels under Whit’s End

MilpooL

god the AREM boot up sound just activated something in my brain

Ciara Rhiannon

*a Christian chat room

Rosey Armstrong

Not finished with the episode yet but the chat room speak just sparked my memory that my brother had found. Christian? *I think?* chat room in this era where he did meet people (at least one in real life at like a Five Iron concert I think?) LOL this is so wild now that you've reminded me of this moment

Rosey Armstrong

Go into the backlog, ya gonk! They did a preem episode about 2077 already.

Gorbant

Eps im hoping for are Cyberpunk 2077 and The Genesis code

Samuel Cain

So pumped for the debut of AREM, welcome to TWOAPW, my old friend. Also, great guest and great episode, need to read Colette's book asap

Jordan Best

You missed the most important difference for the Mormon version of A.J., his name! I'm guessing something like Ammon Jaeryd or something along those lines.

Gorbant

I just want to go on record if you do episodes on "Recess": it's basically "Stalag 17".

AngryOldManYaddaYadda

NEW THEME SONG REMIX?? It sounds so good!

Laura Platt

God the Folger's coffee vibes coming from Liz

John Her

Really enjoyed the guest this episode. Immediately went and put a hold on her book at my library, can’t wait to read it!

Speth

If there is lore for the Fuzzy Masked Man, I must know it

Langolier

As a Liz, I am very enjoyably thrown off by Adventures in Odyssey characters saying my name and also Brian saying “Liz is a bitch” was great. Also, this first episode is genuinely funny to me in a way that odyssey episodes usually are not. The conspiracy theory stuff is hilarious.

Elizabeth Power

Y'all so seldom have guests with backgrounds closer to mine (grew up UU!) that I love hearing her reactions because they are mine.

Loquin Britton-Herndon

I teach at a community college and have a few classes of high schoolers. I (40 years old) was talking to them today about AIM, Napster, pagers, and just the general vibe of the time, which in the moment I named "optimistic unease." Whew. What a feeling.

Josh James

this should be fixed now. let us know if you’re still having difficulty

Loved the Fleetwood Mac 👌

(to the tune of lcd soundsystem's "daft punk is playing at my house") e-girls are ruining my life. my life

My favorite 90s "one of each" kids group were the Burger King kids club kids. The wheelchair kid was even named "Wheels." My fave was Kidvid, because nothing is cooler than wearing goggles and having a gameboy strapped to a limb.

Dergon

pleaseeeeeee do the whole novacom saga at some point!!!

Carli Roush

I originally found this podcast from the Josie and the Pussycats episode after I rediscovered the movie as an adult and needed more content after bingeing all of the blu-ray special features! Been listening ever since! 😹😹

Violent J and Shaggy2Dope 2024

Also absolute S Tier guest NGL Colette's expertise and anecdotes were perfectly matched to the episodes themes.

Peter Larkin

I don't know where the interstitial are going this time around, but the themes so far of loss, striving to find an alternative reality and the lengths people will go to find it are making me look forward to where this winds up so much.

Peter Larkin

The E stands for E-nternet.

BarFly

*hog-eyed optimism

Regular Sized Horse (Small)

Yeah, new opening slaps.

Kyle Cassidy

It's funny that after you mentioned one of the VAs played Lucy Van Pelt that my mind visualized all the clips that followed as Peanuts cartoons.

Joe Angers

Some issue with downloading the file to my android phone that won't allow it to open or be played. Might be an issue with the file name.

Ben

Uploaded perfectly in time for me to listen while I finish cleaning the house for a house inspection - thanks boys! Also wow, I love the new version of the theme song!
