The USSR declaration of war is cited again and again in minutes of Japanese cabinet meetings are the reason for surrendering to the US, not the atomic bombing. Truman knew it was coming, Stalin had given the US a date they would be entering the war and Truman rushed the bombings to be before that date as a show of force. Those deaths were not why Japan surrendered, they were an American mass slaughter to make a point to the Soviets.

Even as a kid I always found it odd how while some effort was taken to treat Germans and Italians as still vaguely human beings, the Japanese didn't get a single nice thing said about them.
