167 - Frank Capra’s “Why We Fight”

The lads get drafted and give Mussolini the ole One-Two as they once again remember Pearl Harbor by covering Frank Capra’s series of WWII propaganda films: Why We Fight. Topics include the language of propaganda, the shittiness of fascist art, and what it means to watch your country become the thing it once stridently vowed to fight.

"I'm so full, I can't take anymore of these gerrymandered Wisconsin districts." "Shush Gokusota, you can definitely fit more inside of your big round belly. Look at how much you've grown already"

Thank you Josh for addressing the "real Christian" argument. It's nakedly fallacious on its face by my god does alotta ink and talk get wasted on it while self professed Christians continually and consistently align themselves with whatever they think will get them what they want like any other demographic operating on reactionary logic.

You don't think Minnesota can hold anymore but it can.

Among the most interesting Hollywood participants in WW2 is David Niven, who went home to the UK and ended up joining the commandos and raiding the coast of occupied Europe. Supposedly he said to his men: "Look, you chaps only have to do this once, but I'll have to do it all over again in Hollywood with Errol Flynn!"

Imma quote my graduate thesis: "Liliuokalani was much less willing to be a pawn of the white minority after witnessing her father and her brother both give tremendous concessions to the foreign element. After Liliuokalani’s brother Kalakaua “turned Pearl Harbor over to the Americans in 1887, she wrote in her diary that it was ‘a day of infamy in Hawaiian history’” (Kinzer 26). Yet if the capitalists and John L. Stevens could wrest control of the island from Queen Liliuokalani then they would also be able to negotiate for Hawaii’s admittance into the United States as a territory, thereby overcoming protective tariffs that had prevented Hawai’ian sugar barons from being able to take a greater share of the American market." Did Roosevelt steal that famous line??

Youtuber Shaun (of Shaun fame) has a very well researched video about the leadup to dropping the atomic bombs on Japan from documents available from both the American and Japanese governments, including those cabinet meetings. There was also a LOT of fuckery going on behind the scenes to try and screw over Stalin at the Potsdam Conference to cut the USSR out of the surrender treaties in the Pacific. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCRTgtpC-Go

"Don't do orb any more." That's good, I'm pretty sure "doing orb" is what fucked up John Mullaney's life. Glad he went to orb rehab.

we've had a few other people report these issues but they also have since reported them fixed. let us know if you're still experiencing trouble so we can raise the issue to patreon if necessary

Anyone else having issues listening on Apple Podcasts since this episode updated?

AJ could be patron saint of committing to the bit. You invoke him before you’re about to keep a really dumb joke going for far longer than anyone wants. (I mean this 100% positively.)

YES. CRUSH WISCONSIN. SPLIT IT BETWEEN MICHIGAN AND MINNESOTA. WE DO NOT RECOGNIZE THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE STATE OF WISCONSIN. REUNITE MICHIGAN AND MAKE BIG MINNESOTA

While many of you are likely yelling "GO LIONS" or "GO DONKEYS!" I'm yelling "GO ROBERT MUELLER and the rule of law!"

What kinda shape could we morph the us into? Google America is Canada's shorts. That's what we could be. Florida is the penis.

Really disappointed that you all repeated American imperialist propaganda here. The USSR declaration of war is cited again and again in minutes of Japanese cabinet meetings are the reason for surrendering to the US, not the atomic bombing. Truman knew it was coming, Stalin had given the US a date they would be entering the war and Truman rushed the bombings to be before that date as a show of force. Those deaths were not why Japan surrendered, they were an American mass slaughter to make a point to the Soviets.

Canada had a Film & Photo unit in WW2 as well: check out their cool shoulder patch insignia! https://themusekenora.ca/from-the-collection-canadian-film-and-photo-unit-patch/

If you are looking for another fascinating war propaganda film for Dec 6, “The Memphis Belle” is amazing, by William Wyler

I actually saw this as a teenager, I was HUGE into WWII history at the time. The announcer voice from this and the music from "Victory at Sea" still live rent free in my head.

The whiplash I had opening my patreon app with yall and LLD posting. Then to see you guys are guests?! Yule came early!

I think it’s very striking to see the use of German eugenics as propaganda from so early, since at this point America was still pretty explicitly invested in its own eugenics projects! (I mean, we still are, but in terms of things openly promoted in those terms.)

Heather

Was listening to this when I got the alert about Lions Led by Donkeys. Honestly absolutely delighted that you covered this as it is a fascinating subject. Even as a kid I always found it odd how while some effort was taken to treat Germans and Italians as still vaguely human beings, the Japanese didn't get a single nice thing said about them.

Peter Larkin

Holy shit literally just watched this series how is this possible?

I just know this one gonna make me somber as hell by the end, considering the bullshit going down

I'm always really happy at the week to week variety of the podcast, keeps me thinking about new things.
