131 - MASH (1970)

The lads hop in a chopper and get into some morally dubious hijinks as they cover Robert Altman’s 1970 war/frat house comedy that inspired one of the most well-regarded TV shows of all time: MAS*H. Topics include Eliot Gould’s mustache, rampant 70s misogyny, and what it means to live in a country that can only define itself by settler conquest.

Relevant to your early '90s interests: https://youtu.be/C-lQqxZVKkk?feature=shared I remember playing that game when it first came out. It has not improved. They should review 'Fire Birds' from 1990. Which I remember thinking was supposed to be a satire until realizing that Nicholas Cage was very serious. I'm still not sure if it was intended to be funny and missed the mark (by several thousand miles) or if it was just so bad that it seemed like they were trying to be funny.

We need an episode of WOAPW about Comanche: Maximum Overkill on PC

Two minor things. Apache helicopters are two-seat attack aircraft and cannot carry people other than the crew. That's usually a Blackhawk (H-60 and variants thereof,) Lakota (UH-72,) Chinook (H-47 and variants,) or an Osprey (V-22.) Also, there isn't a "Jesus Pin" but a "Jesus Nut" (make of that what you will) responsible for holding the tail rotor flight controls together. You tend to examine it quite carefully during preflight. Source: Me. I flew in and worked on H-60s for over 20 years. P.S. I drive my wife nuts because every time there's a helicopter on television or in a movie I get mad because they never get the rotor noises correct. I think they made one recording of a Bell Jet Ranger in 1972 and have used it in everything since.

The best cold opens in the game. I will accept no arguments.

So I do culture studies, I'm almost done with a doctorate in literature. I have some thoughts on defending the shower scene: So, I'm willing to entertain the idea that this does have something to say about the brutality of war but if you leave it there you've completely missed the mark. The time and place this was released matters and it is extremely misogynistic. Without more research my hot take is that it speaks to the idea that women should be pushed to the domestic space and really, punished for the brutality of war. You abuse women to let off some steam. The brutality helps you not think about vietnam, or korea, or world war two. Another read I have is that these guys are trying to push back against the feminization of institutions (making the movie, while possibly anti-war, very much still implying it's them bitches' fault). Same as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and plenty of others.

I have a distinct memory of watching Jurassic Park with you. 0 memory of watching MASH, but given your side of the story it's likely I just repressed that part entirely

Nathan Woods

AJ turning making a podcast into an American Ninja Warrior style obstacle course with his bits lmao

Aaron Whitehouse

Ah yes consistency...

Grouchiest Marxiest

That's the MASH (1970) experience

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

I haven't frowned this hard at so many bits in a single episode for awhile.

Grouchiest Marxiest

I think I might be the only person to have seen the movie MASH but never have seen the TV show

Paula Sulpice

The glee in Brian's voice as he questions AJ about his Car in Tarkovsky bit will always be delicious.

Dergon

I absolutely love when AJ won't let a bit die and pisses the hell out of Brian and Josh, and I also absolutely love when Brian and Josh let AJ run with a bit, knowing he's going to faceplant because the bit is based on a misunderstanding.

Dergon

American and never watched MASH

Um actually, Coppola wrote the screenplay for Patton he didn’t direct it. *cinema sins ding*

Nate Netzley

Disappointed to learn that the late Rene Auberjonois was not Quebecois, as I had assumed, and was actually Swiss-German. I have to settle for that other example of French Canadian excellence: Matt LeBlanc

A LOT to absorb at 7am

Please, Mr. Lardner was my father. Call me Ring

Heyyyy. You don’t have to go in on my family right off the bat!

I was raised in the TV series MASH because my parents grew up with it and it's still very much a beloved show. I read the book and watched the movie in high school and didn't really care for either of them - I just seem to bounce off of Altman films. I remember my dad watching the movie and going "Yeah this is a little more blue than I remember." I've been thinking about revisiting the movie now that I have more distance and can divorce it from the TV show I'm looking forward to you spending some time in the tv series and I hope you discuss the large number of spinoffs, some surprisingly successful, others definitely not.

I know the Detroy-it pronunciation was a bit, but that's legitimately how some parts of Ontario pronounce Detroit. I have no idea why. I dearly hope there's at least one listener from southern Ontario who was just like "I don't get it, he's just saying it right."

Jeff Martin

I need a new series of you all playing delta green. It's like call of cthulu, but less helpless Scooby-Doo and more mostly helpless X-FILES agents having to deal with the monsters after it murders the Scooby-gang.
