60 - Adventures in Modesty (feat. April Ajoy) [Whit's Endless Summer #19]

April Ajoy (Evangelicalish) joins the lads as they return to Odyssey for three deeply disturbing episodes that dive deep into the heart of evangelical purity culture. Wait wait wait... George is far more strict than Whit???? Whit didn't have a problem but George lost it????

ABear

I was waiting for someone to mention Passport to Purity, a terrible sex Ed curriculum which was also produced/distributed by Focus on the Family

Mara 🖤💜🤍💛

(out of extremely stiff competition) maybe one of the best aj interstitials i've heard yet

Robert Heilman

Took your advice and listened to the David Griffin interview on Growing Up Christian, knowing his mental health challenges and what a sanctuary the cast and crew of AIO was for him, makes this horrendous puberty episode bitter sweet. I admire that guy so much.

Mick Wingert

Oh Beauty Contests really sound eugenicsy -it's like hollistic judgement of women

Ben

This show is helping me process way more childhood trauma than I realised I had.

Sam Milne

Hahahahaha oh noooo - I absolutely went through a phase where I asked God what I should wear each day 😬🤣

Rosey Armstrong

Hearing these episodes for the first time in who knows how many years were like war flashbacks. Doing the thousand yard stare as I drive my commute

Jacob Dallas

I called the ad break joke as soon as you said the name, and then still laughed because it's so perfectly stupid. And the talk about slurping made me think of the 7-11 Dance the Slurp promo record: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRVeiJwupo4

Korax

You three guys seem to have a good grasp of child psychology and an empathy towards young people. Have you all thought about adopting a baby together?

Jimmy McMillan

But seriously, thank you for having these conversations. It's really fucked up how much evangelicals sexualize their children.

I love how I have the most vivid memories for the audio beats of the worst episodes of this show. Listening to Dale and Melanie open the episode snapped me back to this episode in the same way Eugene describing Hell does for The Mortal Coil. The Cosby Show also did an episode on modesty with more or less the same message. Good thing Cosby isn't a predator or anything

"As what?? A STaGeHanD???" Well fuck you too, Jimmy

Nathan Woods

I laughed really loud at this episode’s ad break
