Adjusting and becoming... an honest update

TW - mental health, hormones, medication, bi-polar

Hello Humans,

I just wanted to give you an update. I’ve been on a bit of a rollercoaster lately.

The video above explains more, but I’ll also do my best to put it into words here for those of you who prefer my words over my waffles. ;)

I’ve just started HRT, and as anyone who’s been through that journey will know, the first few months can be tricky.

I’ve been experiencing some emotional turbulence and have had to step back a few times just to find my balance. I’m also about to begin ADHD medication, which adds another layer of adjustment, so please bear with me while I find my footing and figure out how my brain and body are going to work together from here.

Apart from the brain fog, anxiety, and energy slumps, one of the scariest moments for me last month was being on stage and thinking, “I can’t do music anymore.”

That’s never happened to me before, and it really shook me. The stage has always been my happy place.

That’s when I knew this wasn’t just a normal wave of creative doubt, but something deeper that needed a consult with my GP and my therapist, who both encouraged me to try HRT. Seems I’m getting to that age where I’m about to enter another stage of life, and honestly, I'm excited about it but I can see now it's going to be a stage of readjustment and I need to be ready for it.

The good news is, things are moving forward, and I’m feeling hopeful again.

So, here’s what I’m proposing for October:

PJ HARVEY EP

I’m working on a PJ Harvey cover EP, which has been such a joy to dive into. I did a show recently celebrating her music, so why not capture that and share it with you all?

I’ll also be doing a livestream on Wednesday 29th — playing PJ Harvey covers, a few accordion songs, some Crimson Veil material, and even dusting off some old songs that haven’t seen the light in years. Book your diaries!

And! I’m recording and touring with Hana Piranha this week too, so there’ll be plenty of juicy behind-the-scenes bits from that project coming your way soon.

Thank you for sticking with me through all my ups and downs. This space means the world to me, and I’m so grateful that I can share it here.

Love,
Mishkin

Mishkin Fitzgerald

@Mishkin I think you might find the book "How to Tell When We Will Die: On Pain, Disability, and Doom" by Johanna Hedva interesting, she shares many conditions with you, it includes her seminal essay "Sick Woman Theory"

Chris

Take care Mish! Good to hear you're getting care and treatment and i hope it helps you get to where you need to be and that you don't have to feel like you can't do music. My first thought when i read HRT was that you were going through a gender transition, glad to hear you're not having to deal with that 💙
