Quarantine Mini 23 - Dvořák. Not the typist!

Conor's hosting his trivia, so Mike indulges his worst instincts.

My absolutely favorite piece of music is Chopin's B flat minor Scherzo #2. Relentlessly awesome. Esp in Marcin Koziak's rendition.

I've been working my way through 372 and man I dig these episodes. So much so that I've reduced playback to 1.0x. Listening to an obviously drugged Mike talking is worth it to hear the music played as intended.

True story: Over the past few years, my local classical radio station has inundated us with Dvorak. Absolutely saturated the airwaves with him. (My piano teacher has a theory that some big donor threw buckets of cash at them and said "I like Dvorak," and the rest was history.) The result is (please don't hate me, Mike) that it's been a long time since I've even been able to hear the name Dvorak without twitching. But maybe this podcast will help. Maybe it'll serve as . . . what's the opposite of aversion therapy? Whatever that's called. I hope so, because I feel bad about it. I used to like Dvorak just fine, and goodness knows it's not his fault.

Hugely talented but just not the sort of stuff I'm drawn to (I'm always persuadable!)

The list of 20th and 21st century composers that I love is fairly slim, but I adore Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Iove George Lloyd and to a lesser extent William Alwyn. Big fan of Barber, Bax, and Butterworth (yes, that was on purpose), and I absolutely love William Walton's First Symphony, and a lot of his other stuff is extremely interesting. I like some of Piston's stuff, and my feelings are mixed about the Eastman School crowd: Howard Hanson's not my thing. And I want to like Charles Ives and Hovanhess but I can't get there. Bernard Hermann, though, I'm all in. He's written some of my favorite stuff.

We are working on the chapters that we are going to provide as framework. We're getting a guest or two so it will be just a bit longer.

What does Mike think of Aaron Copland?

I’d like to know if there are any modern composers Mike is a fan of... Maybe even film composers?

Has the book writing started? I thought I heard it mentioned in a recent podcast, but I didn't receive any notice via email yet.

Love the orchestral music minis!

Marie Robinson

I'd love to see/hear a list of Mike's top 5/10/whatever composers.

So this isn't going to be about John C. Dvorak?

Also, shout out to Mike for pronouncing the "j" in "Dvořák". A less skilled professional would've screwed that up.

Rimsky Korsakov is a fascinating guy! Didn't he helm the St. Petersburg music Conservatory? I'm not a huge fan of his music (though I can always be persuaded) but I'm intrigued by the few anecdotes I've read about his genius.

Gonna blame autocorrect for the extra "a" in Brahms.

Yeah, Brahams! You go to Hell, and take your lullaby with you, you hack!

I played orchestral violin in high school and college, and Dvorak was undoubtedly my favorite composer to perform. I've played Symphonies 8 and 9. What I love about those is that they are both aesthetically and technically so accessible: I could both play and appreciate them. I also loved Rimski Korsakov; a little more technically challenging but so fun and flashy! Thanks for the classical music episodes; they make me happy. :D

Mike's worst instinct is apparently to share his appreciation of classical music.
