Author introspection

When I first write these chapters, I really am focused on getting the story down. I won't say it's like a fully-fleshed outline, because it's definitely more than that, but there's a lot  going on, and I want to make sure the story doesn't get derailed. (Which is a shockingly easy thing to have happen.)

As a result, sometimes I miss the actual character's reactions (like showing Katri's reaction to Vega's death). Those moments and thoughts that make the character real, not just a cog in the story, are important, but it's easy to lose track of them. We're far enough along to tell you that Kaz was always intended to be somewhat neuro-divergent (specifically ASD) so sometimes the way he reacts is part of that, but other characters, not so much 😅

One of the many reasons I really appreciate your feedback is because that tells me where I can do better, both in future first draft chapters, and in final edits. I really do hope someone will pick up this series when I send it to publishers, though. (I'm going for Aethon as my first 'pick', but I have a list). Not only because I really need help in marketing, but because I think an editor would help me with these gaps, as well, and I can't afford to hire one.

I'm just happy I wrote the story! One way or another, TBK will end up published (fingers crossed it's not self-pub this time, if only so I get a non-AI audiobook) and I'm taking in all your comments on how to make it better!

And speaking of audiobooks, I finally made my little sound booth, so I can start on the Legendary Farmer books. I've been fighting to stay well long enough to be able to record, since sick-voice isn't good for vocal work.

I'm still debating whether I'll try to do TBK myself if I don't get picked up by a publisher, just because Kaz's voice is very different from mine (growly and deep). Would you listen to it if it was read by a woman?

Comments

So, a few years ago, I had a reader ask if I had any books with characters on the spectrum, and I realized that that was something I hadn't really explored. Kaz is supposed to be that character, but since I'm a fantasy author, I couldn't just leave it at that. Some of the ways he's different are because he's a kobold, but as he's going through the mountain, he quickly realizes that other kobolds aren't all like him. Part of it is the way he was brought up, but Kaz is uniquely Kaz, and a good bit of that was informed by ASD. Though I don't claim to be an expert in any way! I do have friends/family with autism, and I based him on them, at least in broad ways. I've waffled (a lot) on how old Kaz is, but I think I've finally landed on sixteen. That works for the timeline, and for how his relationship with Li is going to play out, but he's quite mature in some ways because of everything he's been through. And I tend to think he has a fairly deep (not baritone, though) voice as well, just because of his size and race. Though I also think of kobolds as sounding a bit like huskies, which isn't that deep 😂 Derailed is a THING! It's like constantly getting side-quests. You can so easily go off to retrieve ten squirrel tails for that NPC in the same town as the main quest line, and end up halfway across the world fighting a Dracolich for a gnome who has a magic spyglass. Which is fine, but it makes the story so much longer, and I always really want to reach the ending that's burning my brain. My goal with Lucky Rabbit is to take my time and go off on some of those side-quests, so I've deliberately set the story to happen across three years, which will force me to slow down.

Kaz is meant to be on the autism spectrum? I always thought he was different, but I never knew if that was the result of his upbringing or just him being a kobold. I prefer reading instead of audiobooks. I often forget kobold voices are meant to be deeper but I always hear Kaz internally with the voice of a grown man, despite him being a pup. But then, he's also from age an adult and seems to be rather large. Does getting derailed happen that easily? I understand avoiding that, but somehow I also feel that would be some of my favorite parts.

Yay! I completely respect and understand the folks who use audiobooks, but it makes it really hard for us authors who can't afford to pay a voice actor. I think at least 70% of people I meet at cons ask about audiobooks. We need more people who read words! I definitely imagine the xiyi with hissy voices. I always try to work an "s" wound into their names somewhere, too. And Kaz's kobolds are definitely growly!

I don't listen to audiobooks, my brain just wanders away. Regarding Kaz's voice, he's still a young puppy, so not deep at all. Definitely more growly, and I think the reptile kobolds need more hissy voices :D
