Are there details on the virus variants that are infecting Japan?

I read a local news article about COVID-19 and the Olympics in Japan. It was rather ominous.
They interviewed doctor Masami Aoki, who is the president of women's healthcare committee in Japan (a rough translation, apologies if I got it wrong). According to her, Tokyo conducts around 20 000 coronavirus tests daily, which is ridiculously low, considering the city has 15 million people living in it - more than an entire country might have. At the final day of the Olympics, 5000 of those tests were positive. That's 25% of all tests! Aoki states that the people responsible are intentionally keeping the number of tests low, so that the number of positive cases don't look as bad.
The article does state that Aoki-san is one of the most vocal critiques of the handling of coronavirus in Japan, but she does bring up an important point. The number of daily new positive cases only scratches the surface of the whole scenario. I think it would be a lot more useful and transparent to show how many tests were conducted and how many of those tests were positive, instead of just reporting a dynamic number of new cases each day. The only time when posting the number of all new cases daily is useful, is when every single person gets tested for coronavirus every day. That is obviously impossible, and very inefficient in the battle against the virus, but I suppose that just shows how useless the numbers are, unless they are compared to something.
All that being said, comparing the number of positive cases to previous days is somewhat helpful, but again, doesn't tell the avearage citizen anything more than a rise or reduce in numbers. It seems like these statistics are treated like the stock market, which is totally NOT what they are! Honestly, I just don't understand why the number of conducted daily tests are so difficult to display in all those news articles. It's not like that information doesn't exist. Official healthcare sites release this information every day, but I often see it not posted in articles.
The minister responsible for the handling of coronavirus, Yasutoshi Nishimura, forecasts, that next week hospital capacity is going to collapse, and people won't be able to call an ambulance - even if the reason was COVID-19 or a road accident - because the hospitals are full. That's very terrifying, and I truly hope this horror scenario goes away and leaves everyone unscathed.
