Chapter  30 - A New Training Companion

I went back to ALA after sending off Dorothea, and found Misha and the others waiting for me in the relax room.

“Sorry for the wait. I’ll explain about your training now.”

Everyone’s gaze became serious as they focused on me.

I decided to check each one’s status and develop a suitable training program.

First up was Misha.

.

.

I had checked her status before heading into town, so I didn’t expect to find any changes, but she probably used Lifestyle Magic and trained to increase her magic power. The total amount had increased, and her Lifestyle Magic had grown to level 4 too.

“Misha, you’re going to train as you have done until now. Do not use magic power recovery potions anymore, though. Your capacity has grown, so we’re going to focus on magic power recovery skills next. Continue practicing with Magic Power Detection and Magic Power Manipulation. As for Lifestyle Magic, practice mainly with Fire, try to level it up to 4.”

Misha seemed to prefer physical combat, making use of her agility.

It might change once she learned more magic skills, but that prospect was still far in the future. First I wanted her to learn physical reinforcement skills, to power up her close quarter combat prowess. I also wanted to test if leveling up Fire to 3 and above would make it possible for her to learn Fire Magic spells.

“Okay, got it.”

Misha nodded sincerely.

She wasn’t going to complain about training anymore, I guess.

I checked Arlene’s status next.

.

Name: Arlene Ronda

Species: [S] Humankin

Magic Power Recovery [B], Magic Power Efficiency [B]

.

My attention was especially drawn to the [S] in species talent and [A] talent in magic power and INT. She was clearly suited as a magic specialist. I couldn’t wait to see how she was going to grow.

She probably had these magic-related skills since birth. In regards to Lifestyle Magic, since the daughter of a noble family had no need to take care of her chores by herself, she clearly had only been using Time. The Etiquette skill was probably a result of her studies in order to become a proper noble.

The negative figures that accompanied her stats were due to her young age. One thing I had learned in the village by using Appraisal on various kids was that these stat penalties were greater the younger the child was, and disappeared once they turned fourteen and became of age.

Furthermore, she hadn’t trained like I had done on the island, so all of her stats likely increased only due to level ups. They did seem rather high, though…that might be due to her [S] in species talent.

My Appraisal sample group was still small, so I couldn’t be sure of the exact relationship between species talent and stats. It was clear, though, that a higher species talent meant higher base stats.

Arlene’s status showed a high ceiling for all magic-related skills, but the others were all terribly low: the balance was clearly skewed in the direction of magic.

If raised right, however, she could indeed become a formidable magic user.

One thing I was worried about was that her high talent might make her magic power increase too fast. She was still under fourteen, and a too high magic power might slow down or even stop her growth.

I still hadn’t completely figured out the connection between magic power quantity and aging/growth, so I had to be very careful with handling Arlene, maybe ask Dorothea for assistance during the process, or she might end up becoming a grandma in a child’s body.

Arlene’s training was going to last six months, until she would go to enroll in the royal capital’s academy. She had a very high aptitude for all things magic, so if I just taught her the basics, she would then be educated further in the academy and grow on her own.

In any case, I was going to have her start by training her weakest talents: STA, STR, etc.

If she trained the stats she was weaker in from a low level, she might be able to grow more than the average person when she leveled up.

Arlene’s training program was thus pretty much decided; next, I checked Zizi’s status.

.

Name: Zizi

Species: [C] Humankin

Level: 5

Gender: Female

Age: 13

HP  : [D] 53/(56-3)

MP : [B] 73/(77-4)

STA: [E] 53/(52-3)

INT: [B] (77-4)

STR: [E] (71-7)

SPD: [E] (53-3)

SKL: [D] (57-3)

LCK: 58

Title(s):

Skill(s): Lifestyle Magic LV3

.

After checking Arlene’s stats, Zizi’s seemed terrible in comparison. She had a pretty high [B] talent in magic power, but her highest talent in magic skills was a [C] in Holy Magic, so they were overall low. In terms of Martial skills, her highest talent was a [C] in Physical Arts, and the rest were all extremely low.

What had caught my interest from the start, however, was her fantastic [S] talent in Alchemy. Her other crafting-related skills weren’t shabby either. Her [D] in SKL was a bit of a shame, though…

All in all, Zizi was more suited to crafting than combat. Her [A] talent in Cooking was definitely going to be useful too. She also had pretty high talent in other homekeeping skills too.

Zizi was going to do the same kind of training of Arlene at the beginning, to raise her STA and STR. She didn’t have enough strength to do crafting yet, and she needed the stamina to train repeatedly.

Zizi was going to be in the team for a long while anyway, so I had to raise her with the utmost love and care!

I spoke to the two.

“Arlene, Zizi, you are going to do mainly two types of training: one to raise your magic power, the other to improve your stamina and strength. For today, just run! Once you’re out of stamina, recover it with a potion, then start running again!!”

Zizi went pale in the face, while Arlene looked forlorn.

Uncaring, I continued.

“Oh right, you’ll have to drink this poison and paralysis potions before you start training. If you train while suffering from status ailments, you will achieve results more effectively. I will give you the potions you need, which are adjusted and made just for you. Don’t you ever drink poison potions from other people, or you might die!”

I put the items necessary for their training in the two girls’ respective Storage spaces, then gave them the poison and paralysis potions.

Arlene and Zizi simply looked at the flasks, too scared to drink.

Misha, who was standing next to them, downed the status ailment potions without a blink.

Looking at her helped them make their resolve: they too started drinking their potions, albeit with a grimace.

Because of their lack of stamina, even light poison and paralysis potions were rather hurtful: Zizi could barely walk. I checked with Appraisal and made sure that their HP wasn’t too low.

“Misha, help them with the magic power depletion training, will you?”

Misha, who was already used to training with the light poison and light paralysis status ailments, nodded and smiled.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

Zizi and Arlene started training to increase their magic power quantity, under Misha’s guidance.

Struck by their first experience of running out of magic power, they were slouched on their chairs, heads resting on the table, incapable of moving.

Misha glanced at them. She looked like she was gritting her teeth herself, but stood up immediately.

“Misha, you can go practice Throwing. I’ll go run with these two.”

Misha nodded and walked towards the throwing practice grounds.

Zizi and Arlene managed to lift their heads somehow. While Arlene succeeded in lifting her hips, if a little, Zizi didn’t seem to have the energy to lift herself from her seat.

I honestly wanted to go easier on them, but this training was going to have a great influence on their future lives, so I had to be as strict as I could.

“The harsher it gets, the more results you’ll have from training! You need guts and focus to get through this! Stand up! Stand up and run!”

Zizi, clearly in pain, desperately pulled herself up on her feet.

“Good job! Move one step, then another! Focus! And run!!”

They both somehow managed to start running, but could not keep their balance and fell down many times.

“Once you’re in the forest, if you don’t focus enough you’ll trip on the roots!”

The girls continued falling down, but I made them stand up again and keep running every time.

After a while, Zizi ran out of stamina, so I told her to drink the training potion.

Zizi complied and was surprised to feel her stamina recovering. Arlene soon ran out too, so she drank the potion and was surprised the same way.

I addressed them.

“Have you been checking your status regularly? Your magic power quantity has increased already, and Arlene managed to increase her stamina too!”

Arlene checked her status and cheered.

“I-It’s true! This training is painful, but I didn’t expect it would give results so quickly!”

Zizi nodded too, convinced.

“It might be tough and harsh, but the results are guaranteed!”

The two girls answered my words with an exhausted, yet satisfied smile.

“OK then, let’s start running again! If you can focus and dodge the roots, your agility will increase faster! If you manage to move without making noise, you can soon learn the Sneaking skill too. No matter what you do, if you keep a clear objective in mind, the results will definitely follow!”

We continued the process two more times, and by the time their magic power had fully recovered we were back at the rest stop.

“Repeat the training we just did by yourselves! I have something to do, so I’ll leave you for now.”

So I said, and left.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

The reason why I left the girls training by themselves was because I needed to make beds for Zizi, Pipi, and Arlene.

I had built a new house, but Zizi, Pipi, and Arlene still didn’t have a place to sleep, which was naturally inconvenient, so I decided to enlarge the two-story house by 150%.

First, as I had done when I built the house, I flattened the ground and piled up blocks made from boulders.

By noon, the expansion was complete. By the evening, I had finished furnishing the interior too. I expanded Misha’s bedroom, on the second floor, and turned it into a large bedroom for the girls. I put four beds, four tables, full length mirrors and more.

The expanded area on the first floor was going to become a training room: I put dumbbells and other workout tools in it.

When it got dark outside, I gathered everyone and explained how to use the workout tools and machines.

I instructed Zizi and Arlene to alternate between magic power quantity training and physical exercise, then went to the training grounds with Misha, for her night-time swordplay training session.

Zizi and Arlene came to see us train afterwards, but when they saw Misha get whacked by my training sword they scurried away.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

After finishing Zizi and Arlene’s training menu for the day, I went back to the living room by myself and sat on the sofa.

My head was swirling with plans about the girls’ future training.

I now had the chance to oversee training for three individuals with different aptitudes than me, and see what results they would achieve.

I was interested from the start in gathering data from people other than me, but never expected things could proceed so ideally.

Since Arlene was the daughter of Ronda’s lord, Albert, I was now forced to stay near Ronda for a while longer, but if it meant being able to see how she grew, the pros easily outweighed the cons.

I also had to take good care of Zizi and the others. If I used them for my own goals, I had to take proper responsibility.

That, in itself, was not a problem. There was something else I was worried about: the fact that I had become acquainted with Dorothea and other people of authority. They did not seem to have bad intentions, but I could not predict what could happen with such people keeping an eye on me.

I couldn’t help being worried about being involved in some sort of trouble by them, sooner or later…
