Not only was the movie in the male perspective, but Summer’s whole “I don’t want anything serious” and being so nonchalant about things is the type of behavior that we usually see coming more from men. I’m not saying women aren’t like that, but more often it’s men who don’t want to commit. Despite that, women get into situationships with them hoping things will change and that he’ll change his mind. Instead, they wind up with a broken heart like Tom.

@ash , wow that is such an interesting way to interpret it. i never thought about it like that. it’s true, throughout the whole movie it really does seem that tom is just head over heels for her without really knowing summer’s heart. he was in love with this perfect idea he had of her. maybe if he had gotten past the daydream and really really gotten to know her he would’ve realized himself that they weren’t a good match

I love this movie. it used to be my favorite movie. I love how you judge Summer, because we are so used to the POV of the dude, but in this movie it flips it. sure, summer did just do whatever she wanted, and not always caring how that made others feel. she had flaws. But Tom never listened to her. He wanted a version of hers that she never said she was. so he kind of broke his own heart In a way. She was a bit of a walking contradiction, but she also made it clear she wasn't in it for the long hall or for something serious and he didn't want to see that. 💜. I love this movie for being very anti classic rom com.

Exactly! That scene reveals so much about their dynamic. We as an audience barely know anything about Summer as a person bc he doesn’t really know or even care. It’s all about how he views her in relation to him. All we really know about her is that she likes the Smiths and The Beatles and the fact that he’s so drawn to her bc he’s shocked that a girl would like two of the most successful and popular bands of all time tells us a lot about him lol.

This exactly. It's brilliantly done, a film built for dissection. One of the scenes that really exemplifies this is the one in Summer's room where she is telling Tom things she's never told anyone before- except we don't really hear what she says because Tom doesn't really hear or pay attention to what she says- he's too focused on himself, only taking in what her vulnerability means for him. Over and over he turns her into an idea and an accessory instead of a full human.

The soundtrack of this movie is PHENOMENAL, I absolutely adore the way they shot some of the scenes that make you so drawn to the story and also the fact you learn valuable lessons through the experience of Tom ahhhh ✨ gosh i love this movie

I hate Summer. I hate her crooked teeth. I hate her 1960s haircut. I hate her knobby knees. I hate her cockroach-shaped splotch on her neck. I hate the way she smacks her lips before she talks. I hate the way she sounds when she laughs. I HATE THIS SONG.

This is probably one of the most misinterpreted films out there. A lot of viewers (particularly men) view Summer as the villain but this movie is meant to be a critique of the "manic pixie dream girl" trope that has long been popular in media, especially in the 2000s and 2010s. She said from the very start that she didn't want anything serious, he deluded himself into thinking that she would eventually change for him, and he built an image of her in his head of being the "perfect woman" for him without really seeing her or listening to what she said she wanted. Very nuanced and refreshing film to come out following the romcom era.
