Hey you two, I’ve been watching a lot of your reactions over the years and since you started Mad Men I had to check out the full reactions. You mentioned Betty maybe being hated (like Skyler), which made me look back at my feelings back in the day when Mad Men started. I remember falling in love with the office atmosphere and therefore I didn’t really care for everything surrounding it. I didn’t ignore it, but my focus was set. With rewatches I definitely completed the picture though, maybe just the first impression when you fall in love with something special: this periodic drama with these „authentic“ characters in advertisement (which sadly is a part of my work life). I don’t remember hating Betty, but since I didn’t focus too much on her scenes, I guess I just didn’t like some parental behaviors like thinking her daughter needs to be skinny and pretty or escalating sometimes against the single mother or just.. saying she hated Kennedy even though she didn’t. Back then I guess I didn’t realize the depth, how these things manifested themselves (she playing that role to survive, trying to break the cycle and other circumstances). And it wasn’t like I didn’t care for the women characters, probably just her in that boring suburban life, while Peggy was such a centerpiece. I guess because of the office setting where she mainly exists. Anyway, I did realize how difficult the life of the women and minorities in general was back then (and still is to a degree). I probably just took Betty as „she wanted this life“ and lost interest in thinking deeper about it watching the show. Of course, like most of the characters, we can see how their upbrinings and parents formed their lives or how they fight against it or had the chance to break loose. Surely I can’t deny a lot of the shows of the Golden Age of Television being watched by mainly men and a group of it with backwards opinions. The parallel to Sopranos, Breaking Bad and other shows exists. That subgroup fell in love with these shows and really didn’t care for women or their situations other than being the ~love interest. It even reminds me of movies like Fight Club or bands like Rage Against The Machine. Not everyone understood it „correctly“, listened to the lyrics or really though a lot about it. Which I think is okay (everyone consumes art differently) but it doesn’t mean the „fandom“ is a very homogenic group. Just to add it: I didn’t hate Skyler when I watched Breaking Bad for the first time on AMC, but I wanted Walter to succeed and she kind of hindered him. Which is a crazy idea, since he produced drugs etc., but that was the core idea/story of the show and I think many people really just want to live through that adventure (no matter the morals typically, as in "Don Draper drinking, smoking, having ideas and affairs"). These shows offer so much more, but I think especially only watching it once gives you a really selective perception, and not everyone really sits down and anlyzes it like you two, even if they "just watch focussed", at that time there weren't a lot of people you could really talk about it since Mad Men wasn't a success in numbers (like Breaking Bad... which only got viewers when Netflix bought the screening rights from AMC). Today I probably watched most of Mad Men 10+ times. Typically the first couple of seasons way more often than the later ones. And even though I have grown to understand all characters, watching you two react still gives me some nuances that i didn’t realize or had forgotten. Especially: I am now trying to watch „inbetween“, not really the plot or even the general story, but f.e. facial expression to make more connections about the unsaid. Btw. I could always deliver you new show ideas for reactions, since I kind of watched it all and can even deliver you some gems others might not mention. Thanks!

2025-09-02 12:57:17 +0000 UTCOOhh and Freddy.. he was just blackout drunk.. it happens.. one time i fell asleep standing in the middle of the dancefloor in a disco holding a beer bottle in my hand I woke up when security waas carrying me out I asked what are u doing? they said u were sleeping on the dancefloor.. :D: I started laughing.. :D :D :D the pissing happens because your motor controls are fuked up basically u have zero control over your body and your functions... I guess u gals never drank a bottle of whisky by yourselves.. :D :D :D if u r not used to it it can be lethal... but if u r used to it its just another Wednesday.. :D :D
