One bit that stuck out to me was the discussion of Schopenhauer's conception of art as the soothing or extinguishing of the will and how similar it is the the "normie" idea of escapism. Occasionally you will hear people talking about how Marvel movies, popular TV and the like are good because they are a form of escapism from the struggle of daily life. What's interesting to me is that Schopenhauer says very much the same thing but has a more honest way of framing it. Using art to alleviate the will to live is the same as trying to die, in a deeper and more metaphysically "real" way. From that perspective pop culture "consumption" becomes pseudo-suicide, which people partake in on a mass scale.
