Black Sails 3x09 Reaction

Comments

Charles Vane said "Better to Die than Be Killed" and he MEANT IT. Whatever else you want to say about him -- and there is an awful lot you can say about him -- he backed up what he said. In real life, Charles Vane was one of the pirates who really did steal some of the treasure from the "Urca de Lima" after it was shipwrecked. It wasn't quite the world-changing amount that is depicted in this series, but Jack Rackham is right that Vane really is in that box. With regards to who's in the "Treasure Island" novel, I won't say who's alive there or not to avoid giving away too much about how this show ends, but there are several characters in the novel who are POSTHUMOUS characters. They were created for the novel, but they had already died before that story, and are only talked about by other characters remembering them. So, just because a character is from the novel doesn't necessarily mean that they survive this series. Of the characters you've met so far, the real people are: Charles Vane, Benjamin Hornigold, Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, Edward Teach, Ned Low, and Woodes Rogers. Eleanor and her father are a kind of half-real: The Guthrie clan was a real family who had business interests in the Caribbean, and did a lot of commerce with the pirates as their fences and go-betweens, but they were never IN with the pirates. There's no direct equivalent to either Eleanor or her father.

JBK405

Absolutely. That scene reminded me of a scene in Hunt to Red October, especially the part when Mr. De Groot warns Flint and Silver says "He knows". Heh, we only missed the Russian anthem playing in the background :P

Sweet Owl

"What do you want to do about it?" massive chills every time. I think the dialogue about darkness between Flint and Silver is easily my second favourite of the entire show. Milena asked "Who wrote this show?" eh, probably the best writers out there, I wish there were people like that behind so many shows that had great potential but were ruined by terrible writers and showrunners. Vane's death always hit hard, even if it's arguably a fit ending for the character; the first time I didn't expect it though, I believed till the last moment they would have saved him. Also, this time I must side with Max, what Eleanor did was dumb and dictated purely by her feelings and not reason, even if she tried to make it pass as a pragmatic decision. That said, it also wouldn't be fair to deny Vane deserved it (I'm against death penalty in real life but I try to see things in context of that era), in the end he was a criminal, a thief and a cold blooded murderer, the priest wasn't wrong about that. I'm surprised at Mr. Scott denying Eleanor as a second daughter. Ok Madi was his actual and only biological daughter, but considering he was with Eleanor her entire life and the relationship she had with her... I don't know, it was kinda sad to hear him saying that.

Sweet Owl

100% agree, on both counts.

cosmotron

The best part is season 4 is even better. People hate Eleanor but every character on this show is great.

Jaroslav Dočekal

Definitely need to see Last Kingdom as it’s been on my list for awhile, but right now Shonen has my attention

My Toasty Toast

I love the caption "... no words" yet there were so many words including "gem" lol. Great episode and reaction can't wait for the season finale.

Gage

Fun fact. I met somebody in real life with the name X Rackham (I won't give their first name for privacy reasons, but it was very similar). I jokingly asked if he was related to an 18th century pirate. He responded with the most genuine look of shock and contentment and said I was the first person to ever ask him that question, as well as a resounding YES.. He recounted a lot of info about his family tree, so I was inclined to believe him.. Weirdest part was that he actually looked strikingly similar to the actor!

windyMelon

Can't wait to see what you think of the s3 finale!

cosmotron

Oh man I hope you continue soon, because season four is so masterful. But I totally understand the feeling as well!

cosmotron

Excellent discussion, as usual. The deep dive on both Eleanor and Vane was spot on: everyone on this show is deeply flawed in their own ways, and all of them are incredibly fascinating. I think I really noticed on rewatch how much Vane going back and confronting his former slave master really helped him to grow as a character: he confronted this thing that had been hanging onto his shoulders and came out freer on the other side. And you're both so right when you say that Eleanor hasn't really done that in turn. Also appreciate the shoutout to the dialogue on this show. It's absolutely stunning. Everyone gets something incredible to say, and some of my favorite bits of dialogue are still up ahead of us. If you watch or listen to interviews with the actors, they also talk about how much they appreciated it, and how "you don't get this kind of dialogue on other shows". It's honestly really sweet to see how much every single person involved with this show loved it and their part in it. Again, gotta recommend the Fathom's Deep podcast to hear about a lot of that stuff.

cosmotron

Black Sails and The Last Kingdom are the two most underrated shows of all time for me. Black Sails is definitely on its own tier tho, it's probably my favorite Live Action show

DalyDose

Vane's coming yo!

HenryM

Back when I was doing the written reviews I mentioned that in 1x08, right before we see Charles Vane walking through the streets of Nassau, I was half expecting it to be Omar. It would've worked perfectly.

TeaDrinker3000

Yes, the "drift" was very cool and slightly underappreciated part of the episode :D

rerecros

I love how much you both are enjoying the writing and dialogue. It really is on another level. Its very much written like a novel.

D

"no words" -> *Proceeds to talk for more than an hour* I love this channel ;D

Alpi

Considering how big a moment it is, it’s easy to focus entirely on Vane’s death. But let’s take a moment to appreciate Mr. Scott: a man who secretly helped and protected two communities. Who saved his family and made many compromises in the name of keeping them safe. And shoutout to Hakim Kae-Kazim for his wonderful performance.

cosmotron

I know we’re all very sad about Vane. It’s a very sad episode. But can we please show some appreciation and awe for James Flint, who basically handbrake turned a pirate ship.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

His absence is definitely felt in S4, but that's just a testament to how phenomenal he truly was.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

It’s painful how good this show is vs the amount of people who haven’t seen it. I have friends who haven’t seen the show because “Vikings was better.” Different leagues

My Toasty Toast

Such a great episode. RIP Vane and Mr. Scott. The looks Max gave Eleanor this episode 👀… she like, I can’t believe this chick. YES, Madi = gem 🥰

Anybody else see parallels between Eleanor/Vane and Shiv/Tom from Succession? (minor Succession spoilers below) Both women were born into positions of power/privilege (relatively speaking), but their fathers were emotionally neglectful/abusive, which clearly to this day still has a negative impact on their male relationships because they've never properly processed their trauma. The men are from a lower class background than the women, and despite both men having a genuinely deep love for their partner, it's not reciprocated in the same way. There's a level of emotional distance from both Eleanor and Shiv that frustrated Vane and Tom. Then when the relationship turns sour, whether it be Vane killing Eleanor's father or Tom betraying Shiv, all of this hidden resentment comes flooding out that clearly existed long before the man committed his worst act against them.

Scott

what bars?

Gustavo

As I said in another comment, it felt a bit empty after this episode. The show is still a masterpiece in season 4, but to me it felt like something was missing. Every now and again I would think: What would Vane do if he was there?

Gustavo

it's as you said, there are black sails fans and simply people who haven't watched it yet.

Ninaly

I always forget how good this episode is. I cry every time.

Drew

Bro was watching through those bars 100% he knew it was good TV

Isaac

I vote for we to give the title of "Employee of the Month" to the guard of Vane's cell. He hears punches being thrown, followed by that visceral scream from Eleanor, and doesn't move a finger to see if everything is ok.

Gustavo

This part was one of the smaller parts of this episode but I also very much loved the conversation Flint and Silver had about Darkness. When Silver said "I don't know if that was a warning or a welcome" and it cuts to Flint's face, the facial expression he had gives me chills every time, because I fully believe it's both. I genuinely LOVE them, hands down the best pairing in this show. The way these two men just GET each other is crazy, the chemistry is insane, and the dialogue never ceases to amaze me.

Video description: “…no words” Video: over an hour and forty minutes in length 😂😂😂

Leah B

"Get on with it motherfucker" Bunny Colvin would be proud

HenryM

No words indeed....... Vane and Flint tied with each other as my 2nd favorite characters in this show (John Silver is my #1 boy) so you can imagine my sadness at seeing this, I didn't move or speak an hour after the episode ended on my first watch, just sat there wiping tears away and wishing I didn't just see what I saw. But everything about this episode was SPECTACULAR. I LOVED Eleanor and Vane's last conversation together, I loved how Vane once again told Eleanor exactly like it is and didn't sugarcoat anything or spare her feelings. Told her the straight truth as he always had, and I loved how he told her all about herself. I also loved how when she went to talk about him, almost everything she said about him was wrong, she claims he is unwilling to change, but he did change, he was working with Flint and Jack to rebuild Nassau instead of just letting it stay the way it was, like how he wanted to in S2, she said he never compromises, but he did compromise with his partnership with Jack, especially when it came to the fight they had about the slaves. She said there was no love or humanity in him, but we ALL have watched 3 seasons of Vane loving Eleanor and his humanity was shown in the smallest of moments throughout the 3 seasons and a tiny example being like when he sat and talked with the Spanish soldier he killed earlier in this season. She called him an animal, and he is anything but. I loved Vane's unwillingness to succumb to the Preacher's attempt to get him to repent and admit that what he did was wrong. This episode was the embodiment of who Vane was as a character, and if a character I loved with my whole heart had to die, this is how it should be and THIS show made it happen in the best way possible, unlike a lot of other shows who kill off their characters.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

I just finished watching this episode for the first time with you, and I'm shocked. Vane's been climbing the ladder to one of my favorite characters ever since his confrontation with Ned Low. His hanging scene was so powerful and immediately made me think of the flashback in season 2 where they hang a pirate, and people were cheering loudly. But here, the silence was so overwhelming. What a striking message to send to the people of Nassau. Somehow, after the hanging, I just KNEW they were gonna end the episode with Blackbeard finding out. RIP Vane, I'll miss that raspy voice. As soon as I finish your discussion, I'm off to watch the season finale!

HenryM

It felt a bit empty after this episode, not gonna lie, but the show continued to be a masterpiece in season 4.

Gustavo

Richard Guthrie should have taken notes with Vane on how to face death with dignity.

Gustavo

I’ve been dreading this reaction. Anyone that has read my comments during their watch of this show should know I was DEVASTATED during this ep & prob why I haven’t finished the show yet bc I’m so sad lol vane is my man fr

Amber

The blender has such comedic timing 😂

Kaycee

Vain went like a boss . Can't wait for next one . In my opinion best episode the show .

Sone

Among this audience here it is I think so that's what I am referring to. And FYI I do understand her motives completely but I still find her idiotic I mean she is a good character but that doesn't mean I have to like her just like with Wood Rogers.

Melkor

This is the furthest from being an unpopular opinion lol

Jason

From what I’ve seen most people seem to feel the way you do. In my experience liking her after this is the far more unpopular opinion. It didn’t really change my opinion of her at all, but a lot of others have a strong reaction to it like you do.

cosmotron

I just have one thing to say about Elanor from this episode... FUCK HER AND EVERYHTING SHE STANDS FOR OR SAYS. She's the one who's deformed and shallow etc. I really don't care if I have a really unpopular opinion here I stand by it.

Melkor

Rip Vane he died going out with a badass fucking speech.

Melkor

"We are many, they are few. To fear death is a choice... and they can't hang us all." Charles Vane is the truest and noblest freedom fighter of them all because he remained resolute to the very end. He chose to die to resonate his heart and soul to the pirates, to his friends, and to the whole world. What a beautiful send-off for a beautiful character.

Jason

still haven't had the time to watch the reaction to the last episode 😭😭 i can imagine you're nor very happy 🙃 have you started s4 yet?

sand_fl

"You came all the way down here to ask me to beg for mercy? What a fantasy this must have been for you." This is one of my favorite lines of the whole show. "When Charles Vane takes something from a man, he looks him in the eye and gives him a chance to deny him. It's all bullshit." The guy had three chances, and on the third he tried to sell out his own daughter. "So you found the lowest, cruelest, weakest deed imaginable and acted it out upon an innocent man..." Innocent man? Wow, she doesn't even flinch when she says that. "Eleanor Guthrie used that chair not just to vanquish her enemies, but to create new ones. Because some people can only understand themselves through the eyes of those who hate them. They thrive only on sowing the seeds of their own eventual destruction. Miss Guthrie has new clothes now. Miss Guthrie has new friends now. But to my eye, she looks the same." Interesting analysis by Mrs. Mapleton "No one is taking this decision lightly, I assure you. This is no attempt to circumvent the law. Indeed, the governor felt that it was necessary in order to protect it. It was a hard choice. But an earnest one." I rolled my eyes so hard here I almost went blind. "And whatever I have to say to God, I'll tell him myself or not at all." I resonate with this line deeply. "To fear death is a choice."

Gustavo

“Shepherd? You are the sheep.” What a great line. RIP Vane, even though you probably aren’t among my top characters that’s only because all the characters are so great. I think I grew to appreciate his development even more on rewatch, and it is quite astonishing to watch him get to this point from where he started.

cosmotron

About Vane's death, I think his choice to not be rescued and to die wasn't mainly for the cause. Yes, it had its importance, but they could have found a way to start the resistance with him alive and free. I think he felt disillusioned after the talk with Eleanor. First, he saw that now she really despises him, and that they were finished, for good. Second, and maybe more importantly, the person he loves the most (or maybe the only one that he loves) got in bed, literally and figuratively, with the enemy, thus becoming the thing that he despises the most. She was the one bringing the yoke back, and this kinda broke him.

Gustavo

That’s fair

cosmotron

Oh, and real life pirate Charles Vane was also hung in the town square of Nassau, though under very different circumstances and I think a few years earlier as well.

cosmotron

hope the recovery is going well ❤️

LM Reactions

no, episode 9 finished and we had no capacity to move for 3 hours

LM Reactions

I am still recovering from my wrist surgery so my comments will be short like last time. But man, what an episode. What a show. Can’t wait to watch and listen to your thoughts!

cosmotron

Here's my review for 3x09. Standing ovation for Zach McGowan 👏👏👏 https://youtu.be/RVHs7EkwEOo

TeaDrinker3000

Does this mean you’ve finished season 3 as well? 👀 How ready are you feeling for season 4?
