Black Sails 3x01 Reaction

hii, ranking of kings is coming tomorrow, milena is sick so she’s struggling with editing, thats why some things have been a bit late this week

Black Sails 3x01 Reaction

Comments

Totally agree with Lola, bearded Silver is the best Silver :3 Luke Arnold during an interview explained how he developed (temporary fortunately) back problems due to the way he was forced to stand and to walk in order to simulate the pegged leg. In case you didn't find out yet, maroon is the term used to indicate black slaves who escaped captivity, while the verb "to maroon" means to leave someone on a desert island or shore. I'm not sure why though, I tried to find a satisfying etymology of the verb but without success, my guess is that was a punishment reserved for those excaped slaves and so it became a verb, but I couldn't find any confirmation or explanation.

Sweet Owl

I didn't know he died, he wasn't even 60 :( His performance was great indeed and you used the perfect word, his presence could be felt through the screen.

Sweet Owl

ive waited every episode for yall to come around to vane so this reaction made me so happy lol

Amber

It’s definitely worth listening to! They have really great insights and the interviews with the actors are all really great. I’d really recommend any of the ones with Toby Schmitz, but also the one with Hannah New about Eleanor is very good. I know you’re not huge on her character, but I think it’s still a very interesting listen.

cosmotron

I didn't know this podcast existed until you told us about it a couple months ago, so thanks. I still haven't had the time to listen to it, but it is definitely something that I'll check out in the future.

Gustavo

How would melting the gold help? It would still be the same amount of gold.

Shivering King Banana

My man Eddy has finally arrived! 2nd best pirate after Flint, hands down. That cold open is my favourite of the show. He is so menacing, in such a quiet and calm way.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

You can really tell the passion of black sails fans from the lengths of comments lol

Payam Sharifi

I can’t even tell you how happy that convo made me feel lol

Amber

Oh, and about the conversation involving Vane's past, I'm glad that clicked completely for you both. I remember at the time you kind of touched on it, and even theorized about how messed up it was considering there were no women on the island where Vane grew up and what that potentially implied about the abuse he suffered. For those curious, this is something Zach McGowan has talked about in interviews (like on the Fathoms Deep podcast) and confirmed as being the truth. He said that at one point the scripts were a little more up front about it, but even though it's more implied now it's still what happened, and explains a lot about the things Vane does. And I don't think it's a coincidence that he started having hallucinations of his former slavemaster at a time when Max was being held in his camp.

cosmotron

In my opinion this is a show that gets better on rewatch. Even knowing the story there are so many details you notice when you watch again, so I highly support Milena's plans to rewatch it haha. And I highly encourage checking out the Fathom's Deep podcast as well. Even if you don't listen to every episode analysis, there are sooooo many great interviews with the writers and the cast and people behind the scenes. And you can tell how much all of the people working on it loved the show by the way they talk about it.

cosmotron

So happy to see you finally liking Vane lol, I started to love him in season 2 and he's now one of my favorites characters along with Silver and Flint. Season 3 is amazing, I can't wait to see your reaction to it!

Blackbeard is THE most famous pirate. Even people who know absolutely nothing about pirates knows the name Blackbeard. I absolutely LOVED his introduction because even before he said his name, you could just get the sense that this man was important, then he said his name was Teach and that was all she wrote, lol. Season 3 is my absolute favorite season of Black Sails and my favorite season of any show ever, along with seasons 3 and 4 of The Wire. Vane's past is VERY heartbreaking and pretty much explains everything about him, I loved how angry he was at Jack lying to him but I also loved how Jack truly did not mean to hurt him. The return of one of the best friendships in the show is here (though there is one friendship that stands above the rest), loved seeing them share scenes again and to be reminded of how well Jack and Vane know and trust each other. For me I grew to love Vane unconditionally in S2, along with Flint, so I can't wait to see you ladies get to that point with his character as well. You ladies aren't ready for the madness of this season, not at all!!!!

I'll add my get-well wishes to everybody else! I know you're already past the next few episodes so I won't give any notes on what happens here. All that I will say is that knowing that teach is Blackbeard isn't a "spoiler", so don't worry that you looked it up. Edward Teach (Or close to it, with many spelling variations) was his birth name, it's not an alias that only historians know about or a secret that was only revealed after he died. It is how most people would actually address him in personal conversation, they probably wouldn't have called him 'Blackbeard' when asking him what he wanted for dinner. So it's used here just as a normal name, not to hide who he is. The writers expected the audience to either know it right-off, or to figure it out in the next few episodes based on context clues. It's not trying to be a "secret" for a later reveal.

JBK405

Glad that we are having Vane's past as a topic in the discussion. I always found a bit weird that this was kind of skipped 😅, especially due to the importance of the subject, being that Charles Vane's core.

Gustavo

hope she feels better! also no worries on the delays this week, its given me a chance to catch up on other series (im really behind on hunter😅)

Sebastian

Yes Blackbeard did live in Bath, North Carolina. I remember going down there for a field trip back in elementary school and we saw the house that he used to live in lol

Bushido Black

I think you two would like Lost in space(netflix), Flints actor Toby Stephens is a lead in that as well.

Marley Talbot

L - "Pirate Teach, should I google him? Is that a spoiler?" M - "You... are already doing that" Lola's hands work faster than her mind lmao

HenryM

“Is he a pirate?” No, he’s not a pirate. Teach is THE Pirate

My Toasty Toast

I really loved Jack and Vane's conversation, the two of them speaking their mind while sorrounded by all that gold... it felt cozy lol. That scene succeded in making their friendship feel authentic

HenryM

"... a place, 50 years hence and when I'm long gone would force the world to acknowledge; Jack Rackham was here" Well boy it's been over 300 years and we're still talking about you, mission accomplished. PS: somehow I missed the description, hope Milena gets better soon ❤️

HenryM

Yup every time I go to Denver from Florida altitude kills me until i get use to it . Glad she is doing better .

His roles in this and Rome will forever hold meaning for me. He was special

First we see a familiar face. Eleanor, sitting in a prison cell. As far as cells go it could be worse, she has a bed and a table, but she looks like she’s clearly been through a lot. “My name is Woodes Rodgers, and I’m the next governor of New Providence Island.” So, Woodes Rodgers was a real person! And he was really appointed to be the new governor of Nassau. He also wrote a book about piracy that gained him a fair bit of notoriety. (Series spoilers) Naq V ungr uvz. V ungr uvz fb zhpu. Or cercnerq sbe zr gb gnyx nobhg guvf pbafgnagyl va pbqr orpnhfr V PNAABG FGNAQ JBBQRF EBQTREF. Vs ur unf bar ungre vg'f zr, vs ur unf ab ungref, V'z qrnq. Anyway, I think it’s funny how often we come back to characters being asked to write lists of names haha. That’s a pretty consistent plot point that keepings happening. I also think it's funny when he’s like “I understand it might be hard for you to do this” and Eleanor just rolls her eyes and is like “no what specifically are you asking me to do?” “As long as he is alive you cannot succeed.” Immediately cut to Vane to make it clear who she is talking about. And, she’s not wrong. Vane was against reconciliation, against “civilization”. I like the conversation Vane and Jack have, sitting amongst the gold. Admitting that the gold has basically done nothing but bring trouble. And Jack of course talks about how he hoped the gold would be a way to secure his legacy, to make people remember his name. After feeling the effecting of losing that, it’s clearly become something that Jack cannot bear to lose again, and strives to build up more and more instead. I also like how Vane calls out Jack when Jack says that he made it clear the slaves were to “be treated fairly”, saying that it isn’t made any better by them not being beaten. And how he ties that experience to the rest of what is happening. “I remember that fear. Right now I feel it returning. What we’re doing here, sitting on Spain’s gold on England’s island, demands a response. What that response will be, what form it will take, what face it will wear…by the time we do know it, there will be no time to prepare for the blow that follows.” I love how that is intercut with us seeing Woodes Rodgers and Eleanor riding in a carriage toward the docks, showing them as the very thing Vane is describing. We don’t end there though. Instead we have Teach, calmly walking up to the beach and asking politely if anyone has seen his friend, Charles Vane. It’s a little bit of a quieter end, kind of a softer cliffhanger, but still an intriguing way to leave off the first episode. And this whole thing was a perfect way to start, showing us the new status quo and getting us ready for another amazing and emotional ride through this season of television. Can’t wait to see what Lola and Milena think, as well as everyone else following along!

cosmotron

From there we go back out at sea, and learn that it is Hornigold who left that trap. Who persuaded the men under Captain Hallendale to maroon him on the ship and accept pardons. He offers the same to Flint’s men…but Flint is too convincing. “To beg forgiveness from a thing that took my woman from me? My friend? Murdered her, displayed her body for their amusement. I can walk away from this fight if I just sign my name beneath a solemn oath to never again do violence against it. No. Not after all it has taken from me. Not after all it has taken from you. I will do great violence against that thing.” God, what a great speech. And one that’s based in truth and the feelings he actually has. It’s incredibly convincing, even, as we learn later, to people like Silver. So, what does Flint choose? To go directly into the storm of course. The very literal ship-killing storm that “no sane man” would follow them into. But there’s the metaphorical storm he’s going right into as well, and that’s one of the reasons this feels as impactful as it does. Also, I love the way that storm looks out on the water, like this line separating the rest of the world. This is also when Billy points out that someone quite powerful must be working behind the scenes for Hornigold to have so many pardons to spare, and it’s that observation that leads us to another new character.

cosmotron

From there we go back to Nassau, and a scene with Max that is one of my favorites. Firstly, I like the sort of domestic feeling that comes from Anne walking in, taking off her belt and sword as well as her hat. Very much like walking into your house after a long day of work. “I own a tavern, a brothel, a tanner, a butcher -- interests in a dozen other concerns on the street. I am the one they come to here when they need things, want things, fear things. In another time, in another place, they would call me a queen.” Well Max, you’ll always be *my* queen. Seriously though, I love everything she says here. “What aint real about it?” “It is built upon things I cannot control, cannot predict. It is built on sand.” I love the callback to her words to Eleanor about “sand”. This makes it the third time that phrase has been used. Firstly, when she told Eleanor “This place is just sand, it cannot love you back.” Then at the end of the first season they discussed the concept again, and Max talked about the advantages that “sand” can provide. “On sand nothing is fixed…” So here we see a continuation of that idea, and I love how this has become an established pattern with both her dialogue and it being something she actively thinks about. She knows that civilization will still return, knows that the foundation here will shift again, and all she can do is try to root herself as firmly as possible, to keep herself from being swept away. I also like how her relationship with Anne feels different. From the ‘domestic’ feeling I mentioned earlier, to her confirming for Anne that of course their relationship is real, to Anne defending Max to Jack in a previous scene. Makes sense, as it has been months of time that’s passed. Oh, and I’m also glad the show doesn't just establish Vane’s feelings about the slaves being used to repair the fort, but Max’s as well. She doesn’t like that idea, and also doesn’t think it solves the larger problem: that the gold is very vulnerable, and even just fixing the fort doesn’t solve that.

cosmotron

thanks @TeaDrinker3000 going to have more soup and go to bed because i sadly work all day tomorrow. will catch up with your videos too.

We go from there to The Walrus, and a cute moment where Silver is trying to walk quietly in the captain’s cabin where Flint is catching a nap. And Flint says “I think your time of sneaking up on someone is behind you” which kind of makes both of them smile. The really interesting stuff comes when they start talking about the ‘story’ of Flint however. And the way that has caused things they didn’t do to be attributed to them, for Silver to be associated with raids he wasn’t a part of. “They’re so terrified of you, they’re terrified of me.” Very interesting. Naq urer vf gur ortvaavat bs jung jvyy orpbzr gur fgbel bs 'Ybat Wbua Fvyire'. Flint just seems so…tired. Even when he’s angry, he just seems to have such little energy. He rubs at his eyes when Silver is talking, and there’s a second where he seems like he might lash out before he sort of deflates. He only gets in Silver’s face when Silver starts talking about Mrs. Barlow and how Flint must be feeling. And that of course is when Flint makes it clear that he is still very wary and mistrustful of Silver, and not exactly looking to confide in him despite their tenuous partnership. When Flint argues for why he needs to keep being a part of the raids…there is truth there. But I think a lot of his actions show just how little he cares right now if he lives or dies. It’s like he’s much more willing to just gamble with his own life than he was before, and we see it in smaller moments too, like when he boards the ship they come across right as Silver is saying someone should check it out “before the captain”. Watching this episode the first time you understand why Silver thinks they should explore the ship they come across. If all pirates are meant to band together, surely they should step in when it seems one of them may be in trouble? But Flint makes a lot of good points: they need to resupply, there’s a storm coming upon them, and it’s very likely the men on that ship are dead. And while he may not have been 100% right about that last part, if they hadn’t stopped things would have gone very very differently. It’s a wonderfully eerie scene. The slow build-up, wondering what could have happened. It’s hard to not think that maybe it’s something strange or supernatural. From how still and quiet it all is, to the horrifying book that just has “we die alone” written in it over and over. Like, when did this become a horror show? Of course, the truth is really fairly simple, and it’s that they have walked right into a trap.

cosmotron

oh, definitely feel her. i'm only eating soup because anything else is painful af to swallow. and worse of all... can't drink monster because i'm on antibiotics and i have to work without caffeine. hell on earth.

sand_fl

And Jack…Oh, Jack. Now, like many of you, I love Jack. And one of the things that makes him feel like a rounded character are the ways in which he can be very flawed. I think this episode is one of the best demonstrations of that. Firstly, that he kind of doesn’t know what to do with this sort of success and wealth? He’s paying a woman to play cello while he’s in the bathroom, he’s wearing fancier clothes, and is paying “a hundred pounds a day” for the crowd in the brothel below. But he doesn’t seem to be using it in more productive ways. In his room you see a big painting and a smaller sculpture, again clearly things he has been spending the Urca gold on. All of which he is comfortable doing, and doesn’t view as a waste of money…but he’s unwilling to spend however much is needed to pay men to rebuild the fort? Claims there is no other way but slave labor, when he is so willingly and so casually spending the gold for his own frivolous desires? Anyway, I appreciate that Anne is willing to call him out on all of this, and to say that Max has a right to be angry with him about how he has been handling things. I think Anne in previous seasons would have just gone along with what he wanted, rather than challenged him so directly. (“Thank you, Celeste. I have no notes” always makes me giggle though). This may seem like a strange comparison, but there’s this line of dialogue from The Dark Knight movie, where the Joker compares himself to a dog chasing a car, and that he “wouldn’t know what to do with it if I caught it”, and while Jack is *certainly* not like the Joker, I do think that’s a comparison that works. Jack is very smart but we have seen more than once that putting him directly in charge of things that require a lot of management tends to not go very well. Which isn’t to say that I don’t understand the difficulty here. It’s clear Jack has had problems paying men to fix the fort. But again, he’s perfectly willing to waste money on a lot of non-essentials without so much as a blink, but balks at how much he has had to spend on labor? Just says where his priorities are. And I’m sure he means it when he tells Vane that he wants to do right by him, and wants to get it done, but that doesn't mean his own selfishness isn’t still getting in the way.

cosmotron

From there we get Vane, finally back on a ship of his own. Don’t have a whole lot to say about this, except that I appreciate the continued establishment that Vane has very strong feelings about slaves, as he was once one himself. And the very yikes indicator that Jack has decided to get them slaves for the sake of re-building the fort (more on that later though). I do especially love Vane confronting the captain of the ship they’re taking in his cabin though. And the slow way he walks toward the camera is very intimidating. Then when you think perhaps he will kill him with a sword, we transition to the guy *weighted down with chains* so that he sinks into the ocean and drowns. That’s…incredibly poetic. We get a fakeout here, thinking at first we are going to be seeing Eleanor’s trial, only for it to be a play being put on inside the tavern. Mocking her and her trial, to a whole lot of laughter. Mr. Scott is watching, and obviously not feeling great about what he sees. Max approaches and apologizes for it: the play is something she put in motion. She explains that it’s not about her own feelings, but rather about the others. “They are who they are and this is what they need” she says. Back in 2x10 we heard about how people were celebrating what happened to Eleanor on the beach, and saw that dummies meant to represent her were being hung in the street. I would imagine she did this in part to keep that kind of behavior contained, controlled. If she’s letting them do it in here, where she can control it, then that keeps them from being brazen about it on the streets, or for it to get worse. Anyway, we also learn that “months” have passed, which makes sense considering everything we have seen so far. Eleanor’s trial hasn’t happened yet, and a deal was struck with Flint and Jack for all of them to share the gold, with Jack meant to oversee reconstruction of the fort for that purpose.

cosmotron

We go from there to an extremely intense sequence of Flint and his pirates storming a town, leading to the head magistrate alone in his home with his wife. It’s…A LOT. Flint asks him why he hung pirates in the square after Flint’s warning had been spread around, and the man gives an impassioned speech. Saying that he had to enforce the law, and not let his fear control him. That the other men Flint killed were corrupt, and that sure he could see the difference between himself and those other men? This bit, talking about “seeing the difference” between something right and wrong, reminds me of that small moment in s2 during a flashback, where Flint was talking to Admiral Hennessey. He talked about hearing conflicting voices in his head and how difficult it could be to know which of those voices would be right. That “to see the difference is what makes a man”. This speech may have stayed Flint’s hand in the past, perhaps. But not now. Flint shoots the man almost the second the words are out of his mouth. Honestly, I’m not even really sure he heard the words the Magistrate was saying, going by the look on his face. Things get worse when he shoots the Magistrate’s wife as well, and that moment where he sees her lying there and sees her as Miranda…woof. This whole thing hurts on a lot of levels, and I think it’s smart to include scenes like this for those that may be feeling a little too comfortable with the choices Flint has made. This shows us what the reality of that is, and it’s hard to watch. That doesn’t mean I’m not still emotionally on Flint’s side, but it’s great writing all the same. We go to the ship from there and we meet long-haired and bearded Silver, which is my favorite version of him haha. It’s always so strange to go back and see him in the first season when he’s all baby faced.

Here we are. The start of season three. And what an episode to kick off with! I actually forgot about this opening. For some reason I remembered all of Teach’s scenes being toward the end of the episode. Since at this point I know Lola and Milena looked him up, I’ll not hesitate to call him what he’s more known as: Blackbeard. Considering that, I think this is a very interesting way to introduce him. We don’t see his face for a while. And when he speaks, it’s very soft. Gentle, almost. Not a rumbling growl of a voice like Vane. “There is no forever. Everything moves toward its end. And the closer we get to ours, the louder that clock ticks, the less a sane man would let a promise deprive him of happiness.” That deliberate mention of ticking clocks and tying it to death is both great and hurts me. Love love love that shot of just his eyes in the mirror, still without us having seen his face. “I can think of at least three lies she told to bring that about. First, I imagine she told you I retired from a prosperous trade to settle with her here. But what she likely did not mention is that that trade was high seas piracy. Second, she told you my name is Drummond, but when I plied that trade, I was called Teach. And third, she clearly led you to believe that you could point your sword in my direction and survive the experience.” Love the slow turn around, seeing those pistols strapped to his chest. Even if you don’t know who he is, it’s a fantastic introduction. Then when the guy waiting outside hears the gunshots, sees the barely-alive man crawling on the floor…he looks in Teach’s cabin to already see him seated at his desk, as if he never stood up at all.

cosmotron

"You know who I am? What you cannot know is where I come from, what I once was. If you knew that, I imagine you would've made different choices today." "Stop. Now you have wormed your way into the heads of the men out there. And they've granted you authority over them because of it. But in my head, you are not welcome." Easy there, Johnny boy, you are good, but you still have much to learn. The scene at the end between Vane and Jack was a great one. Jack: You know I take no pleasure in it. If there were any other way... Vane: Jack, if I thought it gave you any pleasure, I'd have killed you the moment you suggested it. "You think if you refrain from beating them, it's any better? It isn't the violence. It isn't the labor or the hunger or the heat or the chains. You know what those men fear right now? It's the unknown. Lash that comes from nowhere for reasons never explained. A visit from the taskmaster in the dead of night." That's a powerful quote right there. "What that response will be, what form it will take, what face it will wear..." as it is showing Eleanor's face. Simply amazing.

Gustavo

Firstly, I have to say: Rest in Peace Ray Stevenson. He’s really great in this role. There have been a lot of actors who have played Blackbeard, but his performance will always stand out. This is of course helped by the writing, but he really gives Edward Teach a *presence* that’s hard to articulate, and isn’t as simple as just making him intimidating. Watching his scenes gives me a bittersweet feeling now, and that’s not likely to go away.

cosmotron

no worries, hope she gets better. i also will have ti postpone this because my toothache lead to masive headache and really sore throat and i feel like a bullet would be less painful right now 💀
