The Wire 3x01 Reaction

the review: https://youtu.be/4IEQfkSiSSo

you just need to understand the work it took to post this episode. milena was supposed to edit this but then we realized that i had the footage to the reaction and she only had footage for the review and we’re currently on different continents, so thats why this is split, and in the midst of my editing this i got food poisoning so i was not having the time of my life editing it, and then i put it to upload 17 hours ago and it just finished uploading now

Watch Jujutsu Kaisen please

Damn, I'm so late to the discussion on this one, but I love that you're digging season 3 thus far. Despite my fatigue of seeing Aidan Gillen so frequently in shows/films, he's so good in this season that it was like seeing him for the first time again. I actually saw him walk around Donnybrook once on the way to college. One of my friends saw him the last time Radiohead played in Dublin, he was plastered 😅

TeaDrinker3000

Different continents?! Damn, now that's dedication.

Levi

I've been to India and all through South East Asia too many times and can confidently say the street vendors are often safer than restaurants. Never once been sick from street food but have from fancy sit down places. With street food you can see the way the store and prepare it and they cook right in front of you. Restaurants the food arrives from a mysterious kitchen. Anyway I think your comment was a little ignorant but more so because it's incorrect than racist

Max Carter

Indians are not a race of people that is their nationality and I could have guessed plenty of countries but like I said a wild guess

Timothy Smith

The assumption that they are in India because of food poisoning is a racist assumption. Food poisoning happens in every continent.

Random Random

Just want to say appreciate the effort to get this up while on holiday and sick. Look after yourselves and can't wait for the rest of S3. It is peak TV

Max Carter

If it's relevant to you, it's relevant to us. That's why we're here. 😊

Yes see that’s the thing, I do think Stringer is smart, but he is not as smart as he THINKS he is. Also his biggest problem is that he genuinely believes he is always the smartest person in the room no matter what room he’s in, A LOT like McNulty in that way, which is why I believe is the reason McNulty is so bothered by him and obsessed with taking him down. He reminds him too much of himself. Also Stringers problem is that he views himself as so much better than everyone he works with cuz he just views them as “street thugs” and he has deluded himself into believing he is much more than that when in reality he is a “street thug” too. He thinks that just because he is at the head of the table that he has now transcended into something more than a thug, and that’s where he and Avon differ, because Avon NEVER forgot his beginnings and stayed humble, he also never viewed those that worked for him as lesser just cuz he was The King I mean just look at how he is with Weebay, he still chills with him like their friends first and doesn’t just bark out orders. It’s those little differences that show me WHY it’s Avon that’s The King. Stringer has good ideas but he is trying to introduce change to a system that doesn’t change, and I love how Avon sees this and tries to bring him back down to reality but Stringer just won’t listen.

It was a wild guess based on the different continent part. Hell she could be in Turkey like me but India is one of the few places that I would recommend to not eat from street vendors. Nothing racist about them not having food regulations for street vendors

Timothy Smith

I think one of Stringer's problems is that he's clever, but not clever enough to realize he's not always the smartest one in the room. One could also say McNulty has this problem. Being intelligent doesn't necessarily you won't fall for bad information or tricks like high control groups (which some gangs operate like) use. Intelligent people (however you define it, IQ tests and the like have a long history of racism) are very good at rationalizing their own actions, and can make people inflexible or unwilling to question their own biases.

Mo

It's not funny. It's insensitive and perpetuates a stereotype.

Camzeee

Oh get off your high horse it was funny and it's borderline true

Nicholas

I also view String as not the smartest but feel like that is a generally unpopular opinion among Wire fans. He almost certainly had a rough upbringing without a great education, and I appreciate the fact that he is taking classes to improve himself, but he doesn't seem to grasp the fact that a couple community college classes aren't going to transform him into a business savant. It is rather tragic- if he had a more privileged path I genuinely believe he could've easily been a very successful respected businessman in an alternate universe. One particular moment which is very small but always stood out to me is from season two: Stringer: "Be subtle with it, man...You know what subtle means?" Shamrock: "Laid back and shit." It is just a throw away moment, but it illustrates how Stringer views himself as smarter than everyone around him, when reality doesn't necessarily reflect that. There's other small moments which help capture this element of Stringer- for example his upcoming stock tips on phone companies.

Doug

This is a borderline racist comment. There is no indication whatsoever that they are in India other than the fact Lola got food poisoning.

Camzeee

And so, we have been introduced to 4 incredible characters in this episode. I can't wait for you guys to learn about them all. Also, it's easy to say burn it to the ground, but that doesn't do anything, either. I'm not convinced this is a societal problem, either, it's more of a human problem. I don't see things being handled better in Europe or anywhere else with similar problems. Not to mention, it's not that bad all over America, this is very much an urban, inner-city, problem.

Aj

Sounds like you're in India. Stay away from street food vendors

Timothy Smith

Pretty sure everyone loves when you share a bit of your own lives. It's not irrelevant at all :)

Farbod

"I saw children. I saw children! I can't..." You've seen nothing yet :D

Please take a week break to relax if you need too. You two are constantly posting content for us so take a vacation and reset for once.

Man the more and more I re-watch this show, every time I am reminded of how stupid Stringer actually is. I think on first watch, because McNulty was so laser focused on him it made me believe that he was actually the smart one and the one to take down. I was so young when I first watched so some things flew over my head. Upon re-watch after re-watch though you start to understand that Stringer is actually not smart at all, and VERY delusional. That scene where he basically set up their meetings like a classroom is genuinely one of the funniest scenes in the entire show because you truly get to see that out of all the young kids and the adults who aren't higher ups like him in that room, STRINGER, the 2nd in command is actually the only one not talking sense, lol. I mean I get what he's saying about the fighting for territory is what causes dead bodies and that's what brings the cops, and he is absolutely right, BUT unfortunately that's apart of the game that just won't change no matter how much you want it to. The others in that room understands this, Avon understands this, and Stringer just doesn't. Lola was also 100% correct in that he is taking kids off the street who are taught the way of the game and expecting them to just up and start thinking like Businessmen who own companies, that is just not realistic. I genuinely loved Poot in that scene because he threw Stringer's illogical thinking right back in his face, which is why String got so mad.

hope you feel better! appreciate yall making this work but i dont want it to sour your trip. we understand the delays, just post when you can 👍 sidenote im surprised to hear this will be your first time seeing the National live given how often you mention them!

Sebastian

It's always amusing to me that since they have no idea who Method Man is, one of the most recognized faces in hip hop is just a forgettable random to them

Pape

Second this hard! Like I hope they can get some time to just breathe if they need to, especially if they’re sick or just need time to themselves

space colon

ive heard of method man but i realized i never actually knew what he looks like, so it still doesnt help 😂

LM Reactions

the girls fondly reminiscing on Amsterdam made me smile. Weird coincidence when starting season 3 :)

MrRuss50

Sounds like you need a vacation from your vacation.

Orr Malus

Appreciate y’all’s efforts can’t wait to see how y’all edit/react to episode 2. So much shit to pay attention to

Thomas

Appreciate the heroic effort to get this one up. Enjoy your vacation!

PoorHector

I love the story of his casting. According to David Simon, tons of rappers wanted to be on the show, but Method was the only one who researched the part and came to the audition like a professional, asking questions about the character. And not to go off-topic, but Method Man also did a great job hosting the official "The Wire" podcast a few years back.

Mike Conlin

Edit: not saying the adults are justified for using kids, explaining why they used kid which is so incredibly fucked up Opening scene is too good! The mayor (government) destroys public housing project that the government created, the demolition creates a wide cloud of dust and debris that sets off car alarms and has everyone coughing and running for cover. A problem that the government caused is “solved” by the government in a way that creates more problems. Add onto this Bodie and Poot talking about how people make the same mistakes without changing… Love the discussion about the horrors created by the prison industrial complex, the reform discussion is what I live for omfg. One of the main reasons kids are involved so often in selling of drugs is because adults will do so much time in prison, they feel that they might as well just use kids who will get a few months in Juvenal Hall. Especially if those kids are desperate for money… As of 2023 44% of men who are released from prison are back within a year https://wisevoter.com/state-rankings/recidivism-rates-by-state/#:~:text=Recidivism%20rates%20in%20the%20U.S.,within%20their%20first%20year%20out.
