The Wire 2x11 Reaction

The Wire 2x11 Reaction

Comments

Just signed up to your Patreon a few days ago to watch The Wire reactions and I think you two are doing a great job because sometimes I see people try to react to the series and are so confused to the point it's almost frustrating. Then again, this is probably my third or fourth time watching the entire series.

Jeffrey Miller

Yeah, one of the biggest themes of the entire series is how post-industrial capitalism ate away at cities starting in the 1970s. The legislature has the choice of renovations to the ports or building condominiums. Obviously, improvements to get more ships in would create more jobs that would be longer term. Building the condos create jobs until they're built and then the vast majority of the money they make goes into far fewer hands. Maybe 30+ years before the series takes place the unions would have enough political power to get those projects done, but organized labor was pretty much gutted and honestly the grain pier was an extreme long shot for Frank.

Jeffrey Miller

It’s been going on over a month now that every time I comment you reply to it 😳 A guy can only handle so much attention Honestly if you reply to all my comments on this thread or the next one I’ll let you take me to dinner. Can only be so lucky to always know I’ll receive comments multiple times a week from the same two men 😙

space colon

Rent free? You wish. I know you people would love that. Spat on and cursed at? Oh, you poor thing, however did you manage? Hardly surprising, though.

Aj

I feel you… my heart was torn up and felt physically ill watching that section. Am with you, lowkey worries about them for how season 4 and parts of 5 will affect them emotionally… I honestly think season 4 (and really sections from the whole show) should be shown in schools across the country. If kids are old enough to get shot at and die of starvation and dehydration without the gov caring then they’re old enough to understand why their country is failing them

space colon

Love that I live rent free in both of your heads, Can’t stop thinking about me or replying to all my comments. Makes a guy blush y’know 🥹

space colon

I love that you spend your free time following one person around and letting them know how insecure you are by swearing repeatedly at them That’s literally not gonna make me stop commenting or change my behavior I’ve had worse so you really need to step your game up. Been spat on and cussed out, you gotta try harder bro

space colon

nothing but hate here. You have the gall to act you know anything. Youre a POS. shut the fuck up, roach.

Lil Don075

Nothin' but love here.

Aj

Appreciate your kind words. When I first watched The Wire, it took me soo long to finish the series because so many things jus hit a little too close to home, but I now re-watched this show countless times because It's truly a masterpiece at telling the story it wanted to tell and the realism was impeccable. Yea S3 and S4, mostly S4 are probably the most stressed I have ever been watching a show and I think I cried almost every episode of S4 and I just know LM will too, they are not ready for that season. Truly the best season of TV I have ever seen.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

@ Luis that’s…not what happens? Like, I mentioned in my other comment that the storyline involving SA in Black Sails is my biggest criticism of it. So I’m certainly not happy it’s there. But it’s not at all what you’re describing either. In fact, I’ll put the details in ROT13. Fb, lrf, Znk vf encrq. Vg’f ubeevoyr naq V jvfu vg jnfa’g n cybg cbvag. And then after that, as previously mentioned, there are NO other plot lines involving sexual assault on the show. Like, I think criticisms of this story choice with Max’s character are completely valid, and it’s totally okay if you felt you couldn’t continue. But that’s just misrepresenting what happens.

cosmotron

I tried watching Black Sails but there was a lot of rape. And women finding power through being repeatedly gang-raped. So I deem it as not worth watching after seeing 3 episodes.

Luis

Love your shade bro, keep it up Also appreciate you liking the comment that told me to kill myself

space colon

has always been my favorite character throughout the whole series because of how tragic his arc is

Shaun Eberle

Yeah, most jobs are always at risk of being taken over if technology gets advanced enough. That's the scary thing

Karabo

Frank was doomed from the start. The choices he made, the people he got in bed with. His life (and death) is a microcosm of the stevedores and those kinds of workers as a whole. Probably the most tragic fate in The Wire. It doesn't really dawn on you until this episode that it's practically inevitable that Frank is going to go.

Aj

@TeaDrinker3000 That's pretty typical for people of his ilk. Can create works of art and has a lot of interesting things to say, but still fundamentally a unscrupulous person when it comes to political issues, social issues and so forth. Apparently, even that is not enough for some folks, though, who wish he was even worse.

Aj

This totally fits! Earlier in the season Frank is at a conference for Stevedores and there’s a power point presentation explaining the implementation of robots on European docks. They talk about how this reduces the number of injuries while Frank says “the number of injuries are reduced because so many thousands of fewer workers are used” It was really fitting that later that same episode one of the stevedores had an accident and lost his leg A few weeks back on 2x07 Shared some disheartening data I’d found, 2017 study posted on the website for the National Bureau of Economic Research stated that the addition of each new added industrial robot in a local labor market coincides with drop of 5.6 workers https://www.nber.org/digest/may17/robots-and-jobs-us-labor-market This was a 2017 article, I imagine it's only gotten worse... Another study posted on website for MIT "...for every robot added per 1,000 workers in the U.S., wages decline by 0.42% and the employment-to-population ratio goes down by 0.2 percentage points — to date, this means the loss of about 400,000 jobs" https://mitsloan.mit.edu/ideas-made-to-matter/a-new-study-measures-actual-impact-robots-jobs-its-significant All of this isn't taking into account the trauma of job loss. Currently there are more people living pay check to pay check, more people suffering from clinical depression and more people living homeless than ever in US history. Significant population of these people have lost jobs or have little to no job security. Or they have jobs with employers who don’t care about their needs. I’ll stop there lol but agree hard that that moment had to be intentional from the show

space colon

Y’all got me hyped for Black Sails! Am also super excited for that character coming up, she’s a fav of mine. Just feel like most people will need subtitles for her

space colon

Max is my fav character too! Can’t wait for them to get to Black Sails. Those first few eps with her storyline are gonna be ROUGH for L&M but I have confidence that once that bits over, they’re REALLY going to enjoy the show. Also can’t wait to see what the first time viewers of The Wire think about my fav female character when she shows up next season. That whole squad is pretty divisive to how people like them lol

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

I don't know why, I don't have much evidence but for me Frank Sobotka felt like the Jesus of Baltimore . He died for the sins of the City to continue, so fucked up!

Karabo

I just realized. Frank's resistence to change and technology taking over forced him into illegal shit to save the docks and that technology killed him in the end. Ironically enough, the fuck up Ziggy sucked at everything but was only good at one thing? Technology, computers, cameras and shit. This writing is so godly!!!!

Karabo

Ohhhhh I didn’t even think of it from a technology angle but that’s so true

cosmotron

Upon many viewings I have seen that The Wire has an interesting, idk if intentional theme of technology coming in and making life better but also worse? That paper being uploaded was so suspensful even though you knew Frank was done, just seeing technology fuck with him one more time as he has been clinging on to the past glory of the docks. Damn!

Karabo

There's no official community outside of Patreon and YouTube comments for LM

Kara

I subbed to the patreon just to get early access to The Wire reactions. If you girls end up watching The Sopranos after this, you two are basically forcing me to stay subbed haha I can't seem to find anything where your subs can talk other than here. Don't you have a Discord server, a subreddit, or anything else for the community to come together a bit easier than on here?

C2-H5-OH

No problem as far as the warning goes. Happy to make sure people are aware of things like that before checking something out. I definitely encourage watching! Its a show where queerness is pretty baked into the main story and quite a few of its characters in a lot of very moving ways. I've thought for ages that it would make at great LM reaction show and that they would have really good discussions afterward.

space colon

Frank actually failed his workers several times over. He kept not pushing back against the system but rather working hard to make sure the docks stayed part of the system. His lack of leadership and vision ultimately doomed them all. What he should have done with all that money instead of tens of thousands of political donations and church donations is invest in career training programs so that the younger dock workers with all that time to kill could learn a new trade and find themselves a new career. Then he could've set up a retirement fund for the older dockworkers so they'd be set when the inevitable happened. But he didn't do that. I doubt he even considered it. Instead he kept thinking of himself and everyone else there as stuck and only put the huge amounts of money he acquired to dig them deep further into their position.

Luis

No if Frank had never decided to do business with the Greek then he wouldn’t have been killed by the Greek so he is the creator of his own doom.

Luis

Yes, I would say that. I wouldn’t claim it handles everything perfectly of course, but roughly half of the main ensemble cast are women. Multiple of the main characters aren’t straight. One of my favorite main characters is the mentioned sex worker, and she’s also black, and the show really explores what that means for her in the world she’s in, and how she goes about claiming power for herself in order to survive. (Vague ROT13 spoilers in regards to this and a potentially triggering storyline). Fur qbrf unir gur bar cybgyvar V qba’g yvxr, vaibyivat encr, ohg vg’f bayl n cybg sbe n srj rcvfbqrf va f1, naq nsgre gung gur encvfgf ner qrnq naq gurer ner ab bgure frkhny nffnhyg fgbelyvarf ba gur fubj. But otherwise she and all the other characters are really great and compelling, and the show makes a point to explore those that have been forced to the edge of society and how civilization tries to vilify them and perpetuate the system that keeps them that way.

cosmotron

I really hope watching the show alongside LM can give you validation and relief, that the especially harsh and triggering moments don’t have to leave you feeling like you can’t end the day on a good note Don’t wanna pretend like I can understand for a second what you and yours have been through. I know for me there are specific episodes and scenes in season 3 and especially season 4 that honestly hurt my heart Sending you and yours good thoughts

space1999

Oh it’s a lot different than I expected! Am always a fan of shows that play with morally grey characters and explore things like class. Really have fun with stories in which characters can actually die. Especially a big fan of media that treats sex workers like actual people (shout out White Lotus season 2 and The Wire outside of that one Mcnulty scene) Would you say there are strong poc characters and female characters that aren’t sidelined?

space colon

The Wire really knows how to gut you doesn't it, I mean we just came right off of Ziggy gunning down someone and getting locked up, to Frank walking toward his death. It really hurts when you know that Frank never had any intention to hurt anybody but now of all people he will die. I get what you girls mean when you meant the show being too realistic. I grew up in a city very similar to Baltimore in California, I am Black and I have family and family friends that unfortunately are very similar to some of the characters in this show, this show is one of my all time favorite shows but it also can be triggering for me in a lot of ways. There are certain parts I still to this day can't watch without balling my eyes out. It's also why I am so connected to the "criminal" characters even though I make NO EXCUSES for their actions, and why I almost never root for the police. But this season, like you ladies mentioned before, it was soooo easy to root for the police because we were dealing with human trafficking, there was not ONE person with The Greek that I liked, I rooted for their demise every episode, so to see the ending of this episode and to slowly come to the realization that FRANK out of all of them was going to die, the heartbreak was unbearable. A lot of people didn't like this season and puts this season, along with S5 as their least favorite seasons, for me I loved this season but I do put it more at the bottom of the list of my favorites because I have never forgiven this season for the ending, lol. It was traumatic to say the least.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

You know that's for you Lil Don075. I am waiting...

Charlotte Drolet

Yeah, it's an amazing show. I'm saving my full pitch for when The Wire is closer to ending, but the short version: It tells a full story in its four seasons. All of the acting and writing is excellent, with some truly heart pounding fights that always feel like someone could die in them. The ensemble cast is full of complex and very flawed characters who may do awful things but you also can't help but understand them. And the characters come from a variety of backgrounds, not unlike in The Wire. There are characters that are more on top in society, and others way down at the bottom (like sex workers) and they all impact the story in really important ways. And while there are antagonists, the true villain of the show is not any one person, but the civilization that is marginalizing so many of our main characters.

cosmotron

@Lil Don075 Snowflake you still crying!?! Baby bitch go take a nap now!

Charlotte Drolet

Lol relatable, I’ve heard really good things about Black Sails Curious to hear your pitch for the show

space colon

Lil Don075

Yeah, agree with all you said as well. I kind of expected all of that considering when it came out, but it’s still a criticism I have of it. There are plenty of women on the show who are cool or good characters, but they definitely don’t feel like they get the same kind of narrative focus. At least so far. Overall I’ve really liked the show though. I started watching in part because I wanted to be able to participate naturally in the comments when LM are almost done with it. Because I wanted to also be encouraging people to vote for Black Sails next lol, and it felt like it would be less of a jerky thing if I was also commenting about how much I was enjoying The Wire haha.

cosmotron

@Nubile Reptile sign me up, your description has me excited

space colon

@cosomtron I 100% agree, Mcnulty sleeping with the sex slaves played for humor is just straight up awful. Lots of “male humor” in the show for lack of a better term, tons of casual misogyny and homophobia as well. I think for all the show’s strengths it’s frustrating how female characters are sidelined a lot in the show or just function as love interests for the male characters or are just referenced while not being shown on-screen like Frank’s wife. For the large number of plot lines we see it’s honestly wild how few of them concern women It also has the classic “white guy who does awful things but is kinda justified lead character” like a lot of the biggest shows of this time (Breaking Bad and Sopranos and Mad Men are victims of this but love those shows too) Don’t wanna spoil anything but am excited for you to see certain developments going forward. I think if you’ve enjoyed the first two season you’ll have a good time with the rest of the show

space colon

I've watched both The Expanse and For All Mankind, and I think they're both worth watching. I put the Expanse way above, and it's easily in my top 3 sci-fi list. For All Mankind has a cool setting and premise, and is especially appealing if you are interested in real life spaceflight history. If you're too much into space and science it might make you cringe and roll your eyes sometimes though, as there are a lot of big errors and unrealistic stuff.

Isak Haugerud

@space1999 hmmmmm. I think I liked this season more than the first. Or else I just enjoyed the way the show is being built since that first season. Maybe that’s a better way to put it. All the acting and such has been really great in general. I think the naturalistic dialogue is definitely one of its strengths. As for what I hope going forward…well I imagine someday that Avon and Stringer will be brought down in one way or another, though I’d guess much later down the line. McNulty seems like the kind of character that will end up spiraling even more - I don’t see things ending well for him. I hope Kim’s figures out what she really wants and commits to it. I hope Daniels gets a big win. I wouldn’t mind seeing Valcheck punched in the face again. If I had any complaints or criticisms…hm. Kinda hard to articulate, but sometimes the way the show writes women or about women is weird. I mean, there are plenty of ways the show is dated, from small stuff like when Bunk wore a pink shirt and other people made a big stink about it. To bigger things, like not really considering how gross it is that McNulty started to have sex with sex slaves. Or even things like…Frank has a wife, but she may as well not exist. So I’d like for that to improve going forward, that would be nice.

cosmotron

@Damien Fenton great I look forward to watching it! oh and I really recommend The Expanse, people think season 1 is the weakest season but I think it does an excellent job at establishing characters, politics, universe, etc. Then you can watch the girls' reactions to it! That show is the reason I signed up for their patreon

HenryM

Ed Burns, too. It's too short to really be considered 'The Wire but for the military', but it has a lot of the same feel of exploring the many, many systemic failings of the Marine Corps at the start of the Iraq War. Even though it's a war series, it also feels quite a bit different from something like Band of Brothers. They see some horrific things, but there's a lot more black comedy. Also quite a bit more singing, because marines who are stuck in humvees all day sing a lot.

Nubile Reptile

Oof… I wouldn’t be able to wait to finish season 2 with them either if I was watching alongside for the first time What are your thoughts on each season, anything writing/character/execution related that you prefer so far from one season or hope to see more of in the future?

space1999

I’ve officially finished s2, so I'm only a little bit ahead. Really been enjoying this show and im glad I’ve been able to keep up with LM watching. Knew as soon as I saw this episode that the tragedy of it all would really hit them. I was surprised at how much it affected me! Frank isn’t a favorite character of mine and I was often very critical of him when watching, but this whole sequence of events really made me sad.

cosmotron

@HenryM I haven't yet watched The Expense so can't compare. I love For All Mankind. Great characters all with unique personalities, brilliant actors, both thrilling and emotional plots, and Apple put loads of money into the set design and vfx. Slight dip in quality in season 3 but still highly recommended. It's a perfect show for LM too

Damien Fenton

Them not deciding which episode is their favorite so far... we all know is the one where Omar testifies in court 😉

HenryM

@Damien Fenton I've been meaning to watch For All Mankind, how is it? I'm a big fan of The Expanse and I heard is kinda similar?

HenryM

Frank is no saint but as he said, he did the wrong things for the right reasons. Let's not forget that it was Valchek's pettiness over the window that set off the chain of events that led to Frank walking towards The Greek in the final shot.

Damien Fenton

XD dude does honestly come across as an angry expletive spewing gremlin on Twitter with his responses to people. He’s said straight up ignorant stuff and been too quick to give police benefit of the doubt. Appreciate that he at least on the ball with lots of current social issues, he’s been 100% behind his colleagues in the current writer’s strike and has always been quick to attack the prison industrial complex/awful media narratives concerning black Americans and always calls out fascist bs

space colon

I'd heard of Generation Kill, didn't know Simon was the creator.

TeaDrinker3000

@space1999 Thanks, I had a feeling they'd like it. It is definitely their type of show. Hopefully For All Mankind will end up on one of their polls one day (and win!)

Damien Fenton

David Simon truly represents the duality of man. Poetic and mature when he wants to be in discussing his own work, and then completely juvenile and petty on Twitter. A complicated fellow for sure.

TeaDrinker3000

They’ve watched The Americans in their own time and they said they adore it!

space colon

Does anyone know if the girls have watched The Americans with Keri Russell? They don't have reaction videos but they might have watched it privately off camera? That and For All Mankind (featuring the actor who played Frank) are the two shows on my wishlist for them to react to. Especially For All Mankind because it has a few characters that I think they'll love.

Orr Malus

Didn’t know James Ransone was in Generation Kill! Need to watch it and We Own This City. I know season 3 of The Wire has a lot of heavy commentary on the Iraq war because the creators are so based Would honestly love if they watched either of these or Treme (which is amazing) but they’d probably have to do it on their own time cause those won’t win polls smh

space colon

Comment from David Simon about his writing on The Wire: "The drama i wrote wasn’t Shakespearean or focused solely on individuals.  It was a Greek tragedy in which fated and doomed protagonists are confronted by a system that is indifferent to their heroism, to their individuality and to their morality.  Instead of Greek Gods fucking peoples lives up for the fun of it we have post modern institutions. The police department is the God.  The drug trade, the school system, city hall, are the Gods. Capitalism is the ultimate God in The Wire. Capitalism is Zeus” Greek heroes usually fail because of their fatal flaw, I think it's fitting that Frank's ultimate undoing was his "fatal flaw" being a failed father and skewing his priorities, thinking he knew best. Of course he also screwed over his union and his family by making awful decisions without their say and he was gonna be caught but I think Ziggy’s actions sped up the process. Regardless him and his family and the people he was representing were failed by their city in numerous ways Love his final scene with Nick at the failed grain pier, always hurts. The framing of him attacking the fence makes it looks like he’s behind a cage. “It’s just me, you ain’t dealing with those guys no more Nick” Enjoy the discussion about Omar and Mouzone! Appreciate how quick they’ve been to grasp lots of details about his character

space colon

Since he's making his exit, the actor who plays Ziggy is James Ransone. He actually stars in another David Simon HBO series from 2008, Generation Kill, about the Marine 1st Recon battalion during the initial days of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He plays a similar character, with the major difference that in that series he's extremely competent at his job. Since you're enjoying The Wire so much, you might want to check out Generation Kill somewhere down the line, though I'm not holding my breath for it to win any polls. It's a cult classic that seems to be much beloved by actual veterans for how accurately it depicts life in the military, but seems to be mostly forgotten by everyone else.

Nubile Reptile

I am so glad that you are loving the series. It is in the mount rushmore of TV
