Vera took over all the gangs of the Dominican Republic, shaman intentionally gives him food poisoning and at his lowest moment tells Vera to go back to the "man who closed that path", the Shaman probably thought whoever was strong enough to stop Vera can do it again if he revisits him. Ironically, he revisits the man who closed his path and ends up dead on Kristas apartment floor - after revisiting "that man". That shaman saved his people. Probably over thinking it but was always my interpretation lol
