Vinland Saga 1x18 Reaction

holy fuck. chills.

Stephen

I agree, and Filmbluff is the best, dude pays attention to everything.

rayman

Every single character in this show is a villain. Thing is I don't think the author himself realizes this.

Orr Malus

technically Prince Cnute became a Satanist at the end. Still believing in God, Heaven, and Hell but rejecting God's salvation despite of that. Following Lucifer into opposition of God's authority.

Pyrus

bruh lmao

logan charman

parasocial lol

tai le

Lola you are so smart. you were always so pretty and know you are demonstrating such a high intellectual capacity to understand things. Damn, i think i am falling in discrimination with you

Izaya

I think this episode serves as a litmus test for me to know who shares my taste. So far the only two reactors who I relate to on a deep level are you guys and Filmbuff. Great discussion too.

Nemo

I totally agree bro, I didn't say I was ashamed. There are just always people that will say cmon this is fiction get a grip, but what's the point of watching a show or listening to a song that makes you feel nothing? If a comedy movie doesn't make you laugh then it was a waste of time

Merlin

thanks @KARA_D7 i'll definitely check that anime out. you just had to mention it being pretty gay 😂

sand_fl

how about you don't tell them what happens in the manga @Daniel LT? honestly, what's with people obsession with spoiling the show?

sand_fl

That’s also true Gautam

Alex cleveland

I like ur take. I can see a lot more on your thinking of his change. The miracle part too i guess plays a major factor because it tells how the viewers see or should see his sudden change in perspective and mentality seem almost impossible, but the show also realizes that his sudden change is so extremely, so I guess I can respect that from this moment a little bit more than I previous took Cauntes sudden change

Alex cleveland

watch the full reaction to ep 17, the one on vimeo. lola says it in first 30 seconds

Vivasvan Gautam

Imo Canute always had potential. He himself said that he does not lack courage. He was all the time being "cautious". He intentionally acted like this to not gain attention from anyone, especially his father.

Vivasvan Gautam

Do you know around which part in ep 17 they mentioned it?

Melkor

actually they know about it...someone commented on youtube...episode 16 it was. And Lola mentions this briefly in episode 17

Vivasvan Gautam

I find it hilarious how they still haven’t caught that Canutes voice actor is the same as Floch’s from Attack on Titan. They sounds the exact same. lol Yep Lola and Milena have now cried for Floch (kinda).

Melkor

9:09 We have stopped because you are saying it okay.

Melkor

I honestly don’t really agree with this take, the most sudden changes don’t always take a lot of time to happen, that’s exactly what an epiphany is, a brutal change is perspective that affect greatly your mindset in an instant. I think we tend to underestimate how loss and stress can affect a person mentality. Plus the speed at how the change in Canute perspective occurs is use to present it as a miracle from the pov of the priest so it make sense story wise too. I would also add that Canute wasn’t weak minded, juste extremely cautious as every one of his words could be used as a pretext for political maneuvers by others as it was already adressed a few episodes ago. The words of the priest combined with the loss of his father figures forced this change, it’s not far fetched to assume such traumatic events could lead him to develop is this way Imo.

Pkiu

the way vinland wears it’s core theme in such a thoughtful and graceful manner is special. no matter how much violence and tragedy is presented, the idea of becoming a true warrior or “embodying love” is never too far away

Sebastian

Not gonna lie, Canutes character development was mad forced in my opinion. His whole mindset and verbal ability completely changed to a 180. Canute was soooo timid, shy, weak-minded, cowardly, and believed in god for all his life. All these personalities I said was him his whole entire life... So to see him suddenly change drastically was definitely cool, but unrealistically done... He should of grew into that new perspective and mental space of becoming what a true prince and future king should look and sound like by each episode. The drunk priest said a few sentences that was eye-opening, but to see how he was the entire season and how he was from his childhood, it was too unexpected that it lacked sense! Like I said, I loved Canutes new direction of character, but his development happen WAY TOO FAST! Still loved this ep, but this is probably my only major gripe with this season or show so far! Everything else is amazingly done!💯

Alex cleveland

I’m late to comment on this since I just stepped out of a 11 hour flight so you probably won’t read my comment but if I may I think you should go back and read the patreon comments on Vinland Saga ep 17. There are a lot new comments there that I think you guys would benefit from reading Lola or Milena they add info that you guys would appreciate without spoiling. Anyway have a good day I need to sleep now I’m dead.

Melkor

He's spoiling the show but also wrong. Canute is a saint compared to Eren

HeavenlyR

You said that you haven’t watched a lot of anime so admittedly this might take you out of your comfort zone because it’s over the top in a very anime kind of way but “Birdie Wing Golf Girls' Story” is a very underrated show that has two of my favourite female characters in recent memory as the lead… it also just happens to be pretty gay so do with that what you will lol

Kara the gamer girl from Mars

Daniel it seems like you are spoiling the show

killezio3 killezio3

I read Vinland Saga manga and he’s right. The new Canute is pretty much like Eren.

Daniel LT

this was probably one of my all time favorite episodes in any anime

Siddharth Gediya

Its already 9th of Jan in my timezone. The girls dropped episode 18. Later in the evening season 2 airs. Day couldn't have been more perfect for me.

Vivasvan Gautam

Lola and Milena, you nailed the review to be honest. As is expected from you girls. you grasped everything that the story has to say. I was very happy to hear your take on priest. He is a very trouble man. Oak Trees don't discriminate when people seek refuge in their shadows. The apple tree gives its fruit to insects, squirrels, animals and humans without discrimination. The sky pours the rains on priest, the vikings, the danes and the english. It sort of shows form of love that is universal and tells us to "turn the other cheek" than to hold grudge. This is the conclusion Thors came to in his life even though he was not a Christian. He was the only one that day who died(ep 4). He protected everyone, both his enemies and his friends that day. Canute comes to same conclusion as Thors, but is using this knowledge to rebel against his God, to create his own paradise on this earth

Vivasvan Gautam

It's absolutely okay to cry my buddy. I cry a lot while watching shows and reading books. World can be more kinder place if we men could healthily express all sorts of emotions. It's normal and it's only human.

Vivasvan Gautam

Sadly demon slayer had way more of a visual spectacle. Anime of the year honestly goes to whatever anime has the craziest fights. Writing is rarely taken into account imo.

Goob

man, i'm not saying you're right or wrong, i'm just saying you've watched a speck of what the manga is in the first season. you don't know which way canute will go simply because you've not read the manga and the anime hasn't shown everything. i'm saying that before you compare canute to eren you'll just have to wait to see if you were right in comparing them or not.

sand_fl

canutes awakening is a masterpiece. "are you saying we only exist so that we can be tested and endured?" still lives in my head rent free. this should've won anime of the year in '19 deadass.

Caleb Grace

Benten from Uchouten Kazoku is the closest comparison I can think of to a female Askeladd. Now I wonder if there's a female equivalent of Thorkell around. You can never have too many Thorkells.

GreedCtrl

@sand_fl I compared Canute to Eren because though he is the main character, Eren is presented as the villain. We might sympathise with him but ultimately we're all on team anti-Eren which is also the direction the show wants its viewers to go. Canute here is presented as a hero which is a ballsy move: to manipulate your audience into liking a character only to later on pull the rug from under their feet. It wouldn't be the fist show to do this but it's very well done. Have you seen Devilman Crybaby? Same idea but its execution was done poorly, goofy even.

Orr Malus

This was the episode for me that i realised i like this show more than aot

Abdullah

This is the anime that makes grown men cry. Couldn't help but shed a tear at the Canute Ragnar dream scene

Merlin

The full reactions, obviously!

Camzeee

@Rinne thanks, i just checked and yes, his and the other guy's (wells?) opinions are interesting to say the least. funny channel about the lizzards though. reading what they said i had war flashbacks of men being livid about them hating light or just saying misa was being sexualized (which she was). i don't know why people waste time and in this case money watching people talk about shows when they just despise their views. they must have enough money to just hate watch things i guess.

sand_fl

The music is so good in this show! First time through and I've been watching along with the reactions. It's proving very hard to be patient and not watch ahead...

Camzeee

The comment she's referring to is on the youtube link of Vinland Episode 16. I had a little discussion with him. I find it incredibly weird that he's paying for their patreon when it's clear he thinks they are "feminists raging man haters".

Rinne

Man, sure must make your viewing experience incredibly predictable if you go into it with iron-clad perceived expectations and then continue to bend over backwards to try and keep those interpretations exactly how you want them to be.

cosmotron

Watching this episode gives me goosebumps every time

JT

I made my tea and ate my tiramisu while watching lol

David Salazar

i mean, the show will have more seasons and you'll get to see which way different characters go. aot is almost finished, you cannot compare eren to canunte simply because you don't know anything about canute's story past this season. if you end up watching it all then you may have more examples to compare characters from vinland to characters from other shows.

sand_fl

I just love everything about the Priest / Canute interaction and parallels. The Priest had lost his faith by coming to the same realization that Canute did in this episode. No love in the hearts of people. His powerlessness to do anything about it drove him to despair and he lost his faith. In this episode however he sees that Canute's realization drives him to take action instead, perhaps because of his station, believing he has to bring change to this terrible world. The Priest regained his faith and Canute lost his in the process.

Rinne

86 is incredible would love to see them react to it!

Toidleboy

Interesting take. Keep watching. Surely you enjoy atleast some aspects of Vinland.

Rinne

A person wanting to create Heaven on Earth is the motivation for most villains in fiction and mass murdering tyrants in history. Just another form of "the end justifies the means". I can't tell if VS is trying to tell a cautionary tale or is trying to romanticize the people committing the genocides. There's an interesting contrast between VS and AoT. In AoT, Eren makes a rational decision choosing "us" over "them" after realizing the enemy is as good and bad as they are, and would do the same in his place. In VS, Canute just realized that he's better than everyone else therefore he's the one who decides what good and bad is. This is at the very core of human evil. I must admit, this is one hell of an origin story for a villain. The GoT creators should have taken notes from this for Daenerys' character.

Orr Malus

not sure if you know this but the voice actor for Canute is also the voice actor for Floch

Brennan Rattenni

@LM Reactions i mean i am not blaming her. i like askeladd character but i'm the gayest person and if it was a female character... yeah, i would not survive this show. i haven't watched many animes but i'd also love more female main characters. 86 was amazing and it has many female characters and the main character is also a girl in case you want to consider it to replace mob... though it's definitely not as heartwarming but still amazing. and i barely look at youtube comments but i know the type... says things so stupid it's actually funny.

sand_fl

he’s on patreon but he comments on youtube, i cant remember where i saw the comment about askeladd but it is hilarious, really can’t defend milena on that one 😂

LM Reactions

3 minutes into the video and it's already hilarious. but i don't have any idea of who lola is talking about. is is here on patreon or on youtube. and i knew the moment you said that about askeladd being a female that milena would have to admit she'd actually love it 🤣

sand_fl

I was waiting for this reaction for so long and I'm so excited for the discussion in particular <3

DefensiveOnion

Its such a blessing when they post on time. Thank you so much I needed this!

Berserker

season 2 tommorow super hyped

Korin

The whole season had been amazing up until this point but this episode is something special for me. Its just so interesting and the fact that these types of conversations are brought up in an anime about Vikings is just incredible lol Vinland Saga is peak
