We watched The Night of the Living Dead again at our local favorite theater: the Academy last night. I’ve seen this movie so many times…. It really got me thinking about doing things on a low budget & trying as hard as you can to produce something of lasting value. There are countless higher budget movies that are constantly churned out that no one remembers or cares about. But Night of the Living Dead came out 56 years ago & it still holds up & has inspired an entire genre of movie. This movie is obviously the exception, but there really is something to be said for filling a cheap vehicle with all of your best energy. The stark contrast to the spoiled, high budget, soul-crushing crap that is churned out by Hollywood is incredible. There are entire low-budget countries that get by on their spirit & putting their all into their work. America is obviously busted, it doesn’t mean it’s going to be busted forever, it doesn’t mean that it can go back in time to some mythical ideal, time can obviously only go forwards & deal with the new always wins. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t old standards that shine out so you don’t have to constantly reinvent the wheel or assess what the wheel is for over & over again. It is because of this that I’m sure that old cultural forms that have been swept over by the disintegrating force of pervasive internet will come back. Just think about Italians living modern lives among 2000 year old ruins. Sure, their old society fell apart repeatedly, but it’s still all there flavoring the moment.
