Have you seen red desert (Antonioni)? Would fit perfectly within the eraserhead/alphaville sphere of film

Ben

Is the Dreamtime what the later episodes of The Leftovers tried to do? Haven’t watched in years but this seems similar

Nic Bodiford

“Stay gold”, MSJ. And sadly we have to simultaneously remember— “nothing gold can stay”.

MW

To grieve is to have loved. Sorry for your loss, MSJ

Scott Gregory

My condolences on your loss, MSJ. I’m moved by the beloved, short life you are mourning. ❤️

I've seen the Giordano Bruno Statue in the Campo di Fiori in Rome, it looks like batman lol

Dino Zaccagna

Whenever u talk about dreamtime stuff it freaks me out cause it sounds just like the thing I've been aiming to write (in a comic of some kind) for like 10 years so i gotta do it before someone else does 😫

inland empire is amazing and i think its one of the arguments why hes the greatest American filmmaker. Hes the only one of the really A list american directors of the 70s to look at digital filmmaking as an opportunity to create new rules and formal possibilities. Everyone else has either nostalgically retreated back to film or has used the digital camera to essentially make a 35mm film with harddrives instead of reels.

Alexander Milne

Mike, not to add even more misery to the tragedy of Eric Dolphy’s demise, but have you ever seen the photos of the room that Fred Hampton was murdered in? Not that I recommend anyone look at those photos, but there’s one photo that you can clearly make out a blood soaked copy of Out to Lunch from under his bed in.

Chris

a life that could have been saved by just one moment of decency and a small piece of sweetness

Season 3 of TWIN PEAKS is a whole different thing. I'm not a big fan of the original either, but THE RETURN is Lynch's great unexpected act of throwing the doors wide open and saying, "Alright, motherfucker, HERE's what I've been saying for 40 years."

Michael S. Judge

I have the insane David Lynch opinion that Inland Empire is my favorite and I don’t care too much for Twin Peaks though by God I guess I’ll watch Season 3. Also want to through out my vote for that second music based podcast, whatever form it takes

Ryan Diederich

Just came across Mingus' memoriam of Dolphy that contains the quote " I don't remember any drags he did to anybody. The man was absolutely without a need to hurt."

Listened to the entire recording after in and out of terrible sleep and had to delete my old comment, incredibly, incredibly, sorry for your loss. Wish nothing but the best for you and yours.

Thanks for reminding me of Grosseteste’s "On Light or the Beginning of Forms" it's a banger, and worth a read, if you haven't. (It's online) I was introduced to it as it's part of the audio of Hollis Framptons film Zorns Lemma (worth a watch if you can get it)

My condolences M😔😥 This world is just so fucking cruel & for what? Seems like being a junkie means anyone who has empathy for you is a chump. Libs love that shit they get to treat people like shit & than pat themselves on the back while they do it. I know I'm not the only ex/current junkie who has a story way too similar to Eric Dolphy. Thank you for sharing with us. I really am so sorry you & yours are hurting right now.🫂

Really sorry for your loss. There's something especially gut-wrenching about the loss of a newborn. I've been very close to those situations more than once, and they take some time to move on from. It was a beautiful tribute though. I wish you peace.

And for whatever it’s worth, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought about killing my self after failing quitting cigs. It feels so fucking weak, such a supposedly innocuous chemical and here I’m needing 20 plus attempts to even get to a month. Fuuuck

Maciek

Jesus, the delay is interesting. I have my nicotine withdrawals down to a science after many years trying to quit, basically by hr 48 the serious sweats and mood instability occurs. By day 5 the sweats have stopped and I’m not waking up every hours in a cold sweat. Still wanting to kill the world but atleast I’m not sweating. I literally had to knock myself out for the first 72hrs with heavy doses of weed edibles to get through that period as that’s when I always fail. Something in life would require my attention and nothing would make me feel more normal than a fucking cigarette. Whats weird is my social skills have gone to shit, I feel my mind really cloudy since having no nicotine. It’s getting better but last weekend I guess i relapsed on a vape while doing blow and fuck me coke nothing for being social, that hit of a vape and suddenly im chatty Susan. It feels so weak to be so at the will of basic chemical impulses. Anyway thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Maciek

I'm sorry for your loss

Richard also pointed out what probably caused Dolphy to go into the diabetic coma that killed him (from undiagnosed type 1 diabetes) was that he was on an early ‘60s health food diet at the time and was eating a lot of raw honey.

Alexander Deley

Love your riff on Eric Dolphy at the end of the show. Dolphy is also one of my personal musical heroes. I have an incredible story about him. I befriended the great jazz bassist, Richard Davis, when I was a grad student in Madison, Wisconsin. Davis played extensively with Dolphy, is one of the most recorded jazz bassists in his own right, and was genuinely just a wonderful guy and larger than life figure. I was talking to him a bit about Eric once and he was still getting teary-eyed talking about him in 2011. “The most beautiful person I’ve ever met.” He also added, “I got two great musical educations in my life. The first was playing with Sarah Vaughan, the second was Eric.”

Alexander Deley

Non substantive comment but thanks for the proper German “v” pronunciation. Edit: Must’ve fallen asleep from staying up late taking care of sick kids - sorry for your loss and no need to excuse anything

NYCM&AHole

What's you opinion on Albert Ayler? Would love to hear you riff on him. Ghosts/bells is pretty sublime.

Ben

I can't answer about smoking that long and quitting, but I've quit before, and they're really nothing alike. With junk, you either immediately start getting sick or you think you're cool for a few days, and then your entire mind turns inside out, you feel schizophrenic, you're shivering and pouring sweat, you can't eat or sleep, and you've got a solid 6 weeks of that on the way at least

Michael S. Judge

Same!

Brian

Maybe a too personal question, but I’m curious. See I’m like I dunno, a little over a month now off ciggies. From a pack of American spirits a day for 15 years to nothing. And ya, I’ve never done herion, uppers more my jam. But I’ve always wondered how relative hard is heroin to quit as opposed to nicotine? Because nothing has made me feel more useless and weak willed than trying to quit this stupid chemical. I know a stuff like benzos is potentially worse in terms of cold turkey, I’m nearly curious about that initial like, oh I dunno, 72+hrs, is it similar to nicotine withdrawals?

Satyricon is my fave Fellini film. Just absolute chaos

I've been thinking about Dante's placement of usurers among those who do violence to God and nature, and how that mediaeval framing hid a truth that we’re now finally facing - elevating the symbol of money beyond its signified value. And while I’m rambling; on the topic of hospitality laws in the ancient world, it’s interesting to remember that the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was violation of those laws - with the homophobic interpretation added later. Thank you for this fortnight’s treasure.

Frater XII Irrumabo

I hate fireworks (still going here in portland), but I love MSJ on Lynch. Thank you for what you do.

Louie Van Patten

Need to fucking sleep sometime so I've only listened to the first few minute, but: I'm willing to defend urban fireworks culture in Latin America (or at least in my own experience of Peru, Mexico and Nicaragua during the winter holiday season). Much smaller, cheaper explosives being shot off by everyone, everywhere, in a chaotic, kinda dangerous, but affectionately communal fashion. Pretty cool.
