Sorry for the late post, y'all.

This song is song of the year, actually it might be the best single I’ve heard in a while. It’s sets the stage for the outpouring of love that Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers provides

Josh

I hear you, but I think it could result in a dynamic and possibly more engaging/involved review. I think Bob could handle it if he chose to do it. It’s a conversation at the end of the day.

Josh

I’d prefer you didn’t, Bob. What I love about your channel most is your attention to detail to the lyrics and music when reacting. I feel like a live chat will be too distracting and maybe once in a while influence your feeling’s about a song/project

Trevor

Bob the 3rd verse is from the perspective of Nipsey Hussle. He’s a rapper who was murdered. Its the face Kendrick turned into last.

DJ Avenger

Would u do live reactions to upcoming albums? With chat and everything?

Josh

Oh man… I just finished the album, no spoilers coming. I can’t wait for the reaction. That’s all I have to say.

Troy Peters

really no reason too, I think its best if he listens to it on his own time.

Josh

Time... it's all about time.

Bob_the_Poppop

Yeah, someone else mentioned doing it in two parts. Focus on video, then focus on lyrics. I think that's a good idea

Bob_the_Poppop

Thank you for finding this.

Bob_the_Poppop

I think you're right on this. He probably heard about it while he was on tour. Which, to me, strikes him hard since he also had those three friends that died in the same summer while he was on tour. So the shit just keeps happening and Kendrick probably feels powerless to stop it even though he's doing everything he can with his voice/gift.

Bob_the_Poppop

The album, depending on how intricate Kendrick gets, might be a rough first listen lol

Bob_the_Poppop

Lost in Vegas broke it down really well for me. I enjoyed watching their reaction to it.

Bob_the_Poppop

Thank you for this!

Bob_the_Poppop

I need A LOT of history lessons

Bob_the_Poppop

Yes! That makes perfect sense, especially the mortal man thing. Good stuff 🤘

Bob_the_Poppop

Watched it last night. Really good. I love those guys

Bob_the_Poppop

As I learn more about him, yeah... it makes it tough. It also makes Kendrick anger even more understandable.

Bob_the_Poppop

lol sorry, damn Kendrick blowing things up when I'm out of town 🙄

Bob_the_Poppop

A shame you didn't do the whole "The Heart" series

Christopher Bloom

30min vid for 5min song love it xD maybe for next time with track like this with so much inside culture focus, I recommend you watching after youtubers like Shawn Cee, Theneedledrop to get a better understanding of the situation. The last 10min of the vid was you talking about « kendrick potentiel suicide letter » even tho it was aiming for Nipsey shooting with a direct coloration with the deep fake on Kendrick. Either way, do your things and excited to watch react on friday !

Stormas

To avoid the overwhelm, you might wanna either commit to watching the vid all the way through first, or do a run all the way at the end so you can better understand how it all fits together after you've read the lyrics

George Rainov

he didnt see kobe :(

Savaun Lollis

That makes sense if you watch the video since he put his face on it. But if you’re just listening to the audio you wouldn’t know who he’s referencing and it just seems it’s just Kendrick talking to us as if he’s dead.

George

The song samples Marvin Gaye’s “I want you”. Also the face after Kanye was Jussie Smolett who paid to people to stage as if he got jumped to make it look like a hate crime. When the faces pop up the lyrics are relating somewhat to the perspective of the face, like will smith “where hurt people hurt more people”

Allen Ivey

Also we're gonna need an 'interesting' counter in the bottom right corner

Mohammad Moeladawilah

Definitely do a little research on a Nipsey Hussle and then go back and watch that last verse. It’s so powerful, it is almost like Nipsey was channeling himself from the afterlife through Kendrick. But without the context, it doesn’t hit you that hard.

Alex Cagle-Sanchez

Also just in general knowing how important nipsey was to his community makes that last verse so powerful to me at least. Shawn cee I believe words well in his reaction. But I excited for Friday !

David Lima

The Part Where He Talks About Crying In Argentina Is Another Reference To Nipsey Cause Kendrick Was Performing In Argentina When He Heard The News Of Nipsey’s Passing https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=krFvHw-7Jpk

Roberto Duenas

The line about kendrick wiping his tears in Argentina im pretty sure relates to nippsey as well. Kendrick was performing that year in Argentina when nipsey died, but I haven’t fact checked this so…

David Lima

This reaction, watching you parse thru it is a bit of an example how this whole thing really is an interconnected culture. If one doesn't have some time paying attention to that musical culture, plus the larger actual lived culture that Kendrick is actually talking about here... It's hard to really know who is who, and who did what when those hints and lines get referenced. Makes songs like this one just kindof hard to parse, where it is at times so literal in talking about certain things or people or times. Like I haven't listened to much Nipsey at all so I didn't recognize that whole face thing at the end either. I thought it might be someone else or even like a character or a persona of Oklama. Thought maybe this was a story of some dude and Kendrick was using deepfake to transform himself into a made up person. Of course until I dug into the track more and found that was what Nipsey looked like and remembered the story there. I remember hearing about that incident a few years back on the news, cuz I don't have cable so never see it but was in a donut shop at the time so I remember it well since it was so out of the ordinary for me to be watching the news and to be actually at a donut shop. But yeah anyway so my first thoughts on hearing this track, was back to DAMN, and how in that there's the introduction of him getting shot by the Blind Woman and all that. So thought maybe this ties back into that narrative, especially with the white shirt on red feeling like the DAMN cover. But looking back while that isn't a totally off base assumption to make, definitely I had to find that context and get educated. Learning about what circumstances Kendrick is looking to with the song to appreciate what he's doing. And now, man, this song has so many layers and I'm so impressed with how well integrated the video is to the story telling. But the danger here for you Bob is that if this album is more and more of an interactive experience where you have to watch videos or read a book to get the real story elements and know a lot of background culture information it's gonna be hard to manage all that where you are in a first reaction context. My advise would be depending on how this shakes out, maybe if its more of a multimedia thing and not just an album, to definitely watch the content or read the companion information, liner notes, the Oklama website, whatever it might end up being. If it's just an album then keep going. But this one might be more than that. And so to that end, for some project may be worth finding a volunteer "guide" who has or can listen and watch and absorb all the info, and be the one source to suggest how best to absorb the information. That's one thing about Turning the Tables I like where one person is sharing the project and leading the other through it, while on the other side of it sometimes I feel like they drop too much info or context that spoils things sometimes. So it's a hard balance. Anyway this was an interesting and candid reaction, was looking forward to it, good video. And very cool you finally met a fan IRL. I bet soon you'll probably be doing a meetup listening party or something. Keep it up!

The Gr8 Scott

Oh damn, half an hour for a 5 minute track that's not even gonna be on the album? I guess par for the course for a Kendrick reaction from bob but this album reaction is gonna be like when I watched all 3 extended LOTR movies in one day

Mohammad Moeladawilah

You turned away from the screen and looked back right at the first change lol perfect timing.

Joshua Brice

knowin nipsey and his legacy i gotta say that his verses as him made me like auto tear up on my first watch of this. you said it felt like a sacrifice/crucifixion and i can understand that comparison because here kendrick frames it like the only way he can make sense of it - y'all had to see it. also i know mortal man hit you deep and i was reminded of 2pac's words there immediately when he speaks those words with nipsey's face - lettin the dead homies tell stories for us. loved your reaction even though you didn't catch everything - i had to let some of the stuff sit with me personally and like kendrick says this is all his perspective. if you watch any other videos on it i gotta second lost in vegas - their breakdown was amazing and made me feel like i didn't need to watch any more (except yours!! lol). also randomly man i hope tool isn't done!! i saw them in february in newark!!! it was my first time seeing them live even tho i've been a fan since HS and shit was life changing. danny carey's drumming made my whole fucking seat vibrate.

Jay

To my brother, to my kids, I'm in Heaven To my mother, to my sis, I'm in Heaven To my father, to my wife, I am serious, this is Heaven 😭

CRASH

ms and speaks directly to his brother with the line “sam I’ll be watching over you” . The final verse feels as if Nipseys spirit is literally speaking through Kendrick.

NiFr

The second half of the final verse that you described almost as a suicide note is written from the perspective of late rapper Nipsey Hussle. Nipsey was an LA legend who was murdered in 2019. Kendrick uses the deep fake at the end of his last verse to become nipsey and speak through him. He adopts Nipseys rapping style and manuris

NiFr

As someone from LA, last verse made me cry. We lost a local legend but Kenny is letting us know he’s not lost, just in heaven

CRASH

I think this is the best song of the decade so far. His ability to switch perspectives multiple times in the same verse while still kinda sounding like it’s his own is outstanding. Not to mention the instrumental is amazing too

Brock Asher

Great thought on taking in kendrick’s well being. The Heart series usually are a part of his album rollouts, and are pretty much just him letting you know where he is mentally before an album.

Jorge Campos Jr.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B-eTM11w2VA This Is Nipsey And The Killer He Was Referring To In The Last Verse

Roberto Duenas

It’s all good that you didn’t catch everything man. This song is meant for several listens and watches. There is a lot going on in the music video and Kendrick is just throwing out lyrics. What I’ve taken from it is that Kendrick is disappointed with the state of black culture while feeling for what everyone is going through. That’s really simplifying it, but you can really feel his pain through his facial expressions and body movements. Just watch how his face when he started dancing after the heavy subject matter in first verse

TylerTheEarthling

Looks like someone needs a Nipsey Hussle history lesson lol

Inglewood

Second this^^

Christopher Horton

The heart pt 2 was my favorite Kendrick song for the longest and this track MAY be better. Im still internally debating lol but for sure check out the rest of the series bro. There’s a video on YouTube w the previous 4 together so you could react to that as a whole

Aaron Reyes

This is necessary

Deen Syed

Love that you reacted to this! I recommend you look into Nipsey Hussle (the last deep fake) and his story/legacy. It makes the last verse so much more impactful. Brought me to tears the first time I listened to it.

Christopher Horton

Lost in Vegas did a great video breaking down both the lyrics and the video

Charlie

the heart parts 1-4 reaction next??? please

Razer Droid

Just wanted to point out on that third verse, from the point he raps about how hes "in heaven" (which is the point in the video his face changes to nipsey hussle), it seems hes rapping from nips point of view up in heaven, and someone on the kendrick lamar subreddit made a great connection to Mortal Man off TPAB, when hes talking to 2Pac Pac refers to the rapping as "letting our dead homies speak through us". this song is crazy dense, its taken me so many listens to start piecing things together, dont feel bad if you dont get it all on your first try

Jake Curran

The heart series aren’t part of kendricks albums btw they’re usually singles he drops in preparation of something to send a message

Litty Again

The last verse is in the perspective of Nipsey Hussle, a rapper who was killed in his home town. He was also good friends with Kendrick. In the music video Nipsey is deepfaked onto Kendrick during that last verse.

Emmanuel

Watch Lost In Vegas Reaction So You Can Get A Better Idea About Some Of The References👍👍

Roberto Duenas

Don’t be so hard on yourself for how you consume the music! We appreciate the videos

Hakan Orhan

Third verse is mostly about Nipsey Hussle, a LA rapper killed right as he was going mainstream in 2019. It hits alot harder when you read about him as a person and his death. Kendrick did some songs with him

Brendan B

Id love to see u do the other heart songs.....The Hearts are not a story they are each kind of like a time mark and an establishment of where his head is b4 each album. Part 1 is released be the Kendrick Lamar EP part 2 is B4 Overly Dedicated Part 3 is b4 GKMC and Part 4 is b4 Damn. And they are some of the best songs in his catalog totally worth a listen. Somthing u haven't really experienced yet b4 now is that some artists have "signature songs" where they are well known for and have many parts. Another example would be Drake and his Timestamp and place records. (5 am in toronto 4 pm in calabasis etc)Or Rick Ross and his Maybach Music series of songs which is on Part 7
