A Predicament and a Reaction

Quick video! All rather self-explanatory. Enjoy 🤘

A Predicament and a Reaction

Comments

I'm sure someone pointed this out, but just in case they didn't, he kind merged Untitled 2 into the performance. It may confuse you when looking at it later if you don't know that.

fightnerd

Untitled is better than Damn.

fightnerd

Hey man, I know I’m late to this, but I have an idea: you could run polls about specific albums on your list for if they should be reactions or just personal listening, and then if they are personal listening albums, you could do an end of the month recap about the albums you didn’t react to. Honestly, for someone like Kendrick, I’d recommend just listening to Untitled and DAMN on your own time (and this is coming from someone who absolutely adores both those albums) and then just doing short videos on what you though of them. Have a good one!

disdainjames

I think that untitled unmastered and DAMN are both albums you should post a reaction to because of how profound Kendrick Lamar can be in his lyrics. I truly believe that he is an artist that is worth the attention because of how impactful his music can be and the way he masterfully crafts his verses. Either way I think that you will thoroughly enjoy both of those albums.

Tanver

I recall enjoying that during a drunken live stream. It was very cool (though I don't remember the music now)

Bob_the_Poppop

+ love of storytelling.

Dylan Woods

The Roots would satiate your live music craving.

DAMN. is more an album with a core theme and ideas than a concise story like GKMC or TPaB.

HELLCAT

All of the Run the Jewels albums are great. So is Rap Music by Killer Mike. And a whole bunch of El-P records. Like Cancer for Cure.

Dylan Woods

Run the Jewels! Not super popular but incredibly important. It’s been called the soundtrack of the revolution. And it makes for an amazing react. My personal preference is RTJ2 but you can’t go wrong with any of them. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/26/arts/music/run-the-jewels.amp.html

SAM-WISE GAMGEE

Personally the artitsts I'd like to see more albums from are Kanye, Kendrick, Outkast, MF DOOM, but everyones going to have a different opinion on order of importance, order to listen in, etc.

Dylan

There's so many albums and sub genres I think the only strategy is to just keep track of the albums you get suggested the most, do a little bit of research on each, and use your judgement for albums that strike a balance between your own interest, esteem held by the community, and general popularity.

Dylan

I can tell that you are sonically going to love DAMN. There is still storytelling on Damn but not as much as his previous albums. I’m curious to see which Kendrick album will be your favorite after you’ve finally heard all of them.

Shaquan WP

I get what you mean, but Die Lit and Goblin got top scores. Die Lit got 8.5 from Pitchfork. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/playboi-carti-die-lit/ and Goblin 8.0. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/15413-goblin/ But I get what you mean. There are albums that haven't gotten the best of reviews that turn out to be more important than people expected. A good example is Man on the Moon by Kid Cudi. Pitchfork gave it a 4.1 https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13504-man-on-the-moon-the-end-of-day/ But for the most part, if an album got poor reviews AND nobody's talking about it, then it's probably not worth listening to. Here's the thing, if it's not worth a reaction, in most cases it's probably not worth listening to on your own. So I wouldn't worry about it.

Dylan Woods

That Anderson paak tiny desk concert in the corner of your screen isn’t a bad watch either 😂

Josh

Yup, you nailed it. Trying to find that sweet spot is the challenge. And I want to cover all corners of the genre, so Carti is a great example. I've noticed pretty substantial divides in fan bases when it comes to that subgenre. People seem to either love it or hate it. Same with Death Grips.

Bob_the_Poppop

yup

Bob_the_Poppop

I guess you could go with critical acclaim more than commercial one. Like im always pushing for a KA - Honor killed the samurai reaction which is an amazing album most rap fans and music critics love but it has very little commercial appeal. The issue then is that you have to google and pick and chose which works from artists to listen to and you may miss some good albums that got bad reviews. There is also the fact that if you go with that criteria things like die lit or goblin wont ever make it to the channel. So i think there is a sweet spot somewhere in the middle between what you want to listen to, the audience wants you to listen to and critics say its good/importan.

Boyan Konov

I think important albums in every artists discography you could do on video, and then supplement them with the less popular or smaller works which the artist is involved with in some ways! As you mentioned i would be fine with you listening to untitled unmastered on your own, and then do a reaction to DAMN on video. If you ever get to Brockhampton, i would highly suggest you do a reaction to all three saturation albums, and then listen to the rest of their stuff on your own if you want to. Keep up the good work Bob, looking forward to your videos every week!

Sjur Kvam

Glad you got to enjoy Lauryn Hills album. Here is an album that i dont think anyone will ever recommend to you......"A Little Deeper" debut album by Ms Dynamite. Its a great album, and its an album that could be described as the UK version of Lauryns "American" Miseducation

CiviliNation

Nice! Wish you would’ve reacted to Kendrick untitled 3 performance because Thundercat performed with Kendrick and even had a guitar solo!

Inglewood

And "Rap Music" by Killer Mike, just for example.

Dylan Woods

Yup, and that's the struggle right now. Trying to decide which need to be saved for reactions and which are so-so and can be listened to on my own.

Bob_the_Poppop

lol... love it. Right now, the idea is to try and include relevant albums into my week with a reaction album. For example, this week I did 'Miseducation,' so I also listened to her unplugged album on my own. To me, that makes sense. And then yeah, talk about all of it during the Additional Thoughts video.

Bob_the_Poppop

I agree with the idea, but I don't want to focus on what is only popular. Popular isn't bad, but importance carries more weight for me. Like Lauryn Hill this week. I know it won't get a lot of views, but that was an important one to listen to both for the music and for the fact that it blew the lid off of suggestions for female artists. That leads me toward someone like Little Simz who has been mentioned somewhat, but probably isn't wildly popular in the broader sense. Same with Injury Reserve's latest album, or older albums like 36 chambers or Ready 2 Die, or even Money Store.

Bob_the_Poppop

I've been watching reaction vids for a while. Yours seem the most genuine to me. Thank you for your hard work! Obviously you can't tape your reaction to every album/song/video you choose to listen to, but there are some classics and killer albums, that you can't skip the recording of. Then again, there's just not enough time in the day to do it all. Can't wait to see more DOOM and Kendrick reactions. And I would love to see what you think of Atmosphere, Lupe Fiasco, Run the Jewels, and if you're into industrial and noise music, maybe Clipping.

Jayde Stone

As long as you do every reaction of every album I want then it's all good man ;) Keep on keeping on! P.S. if you listen without reaction, will you still share your thoughts? I'd love to hear your thoughts on Untitled Unmastered, some of my favorite Kendrick tracks ever are on that EP. Untitled 5 being my most favorite.

jofo48

couple ideas based on what you brought up for one re: untitled react, the name is so misleading, its my personal favorite kendrick project and goes in so many directions you might not expect, i think its worth a react as far as seperating what to react to and what to listen to, i think a good general rule is too do new artists as a reaction (unless they are super obscure and no one has brought them up in the comments somewhere). also any albums that consistently rank low in the polls you put up might be worth just listening too on your own time

Jake Curran

Untitled can definitely be a listen by yourself. It's less then 10 songs and all of them arnt the quality we expect but there is a couple gems on there.

John

Do another one of these short reaction vids! Kendrick's 2016 Grammy performance: https://old.reddit.com/r/KendrickLamar/comments/mn0thk/kendricks_2016_grammy_performance/

And honestly, there is too much GREAT music to react to at a rate of one a week, you're right. I would maybe try to react and upload the ones that will draw the most traffic to your channel. Big artists, big albums, and then someday when you're a youtube millionaire you can get into the smaller stuff :) That being said, I hope Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown makes the cut! Still think thats the perfect hip hop album for you.

killian baron

Couple things The second half of his performance is from the second half of untitled 02 if you were curious Also, an idea is you could react to short albums on your own and post the long ones. Just an idea

Brock Asher

I did, in fact, love the drums :)

Bob_the_Poppop

Cannot wait for the Untitled. Unmastered. Reaction if you do react to it.

Shurikinney

Obviously the solution is to quit your job and do 3 album reactions a day

Mohammad Moeladawilah

AHHHH you did it! So glad you liked it! Thanks so much for your time, you made my day by doing this. My favorite live performance, I thought you would love the drums!

killian baron

I think untitled and damn are for sure a full reaction, the black panther soundtrack is probably one that you can listen to on your own. Untitled is still great and a cult classic don't let the name of the album fool you! One untitled and damn are done there's pretty much no more Kendrick unless you go to pre section 80, those I would just listen to on their own. Alot of rumors that Kendrick will drop this year so will be a great run up to that if it happend

Dominic Chan

One of my favorite Kendrick songs period

Jeremy Hebert

Or maybe just a tier where you react to significant singles from an artist, so it would only be a 10 or 15 minute video. Just throwing out some ideas

NiFr

No pressure because of course your personal life is infinitely more important than content on the internet, but I would DEFINITELY pay more for a second patreon tier that gave an extra album reaction a week
