Ola Reacts to TAEMIN'S - Just Me and You VCR

I had to get Ola to watch this so he could give his technical eye on what Taemin did well and WHERE he can improve on too which I'm sure Taemin is already working!

We had a really good conversation after the reaction too and it was soooo fun and I LOVED what he was saying.

Ola Reacts to TAEMIN'S - Just Me and You VCR

Comments

Agreed! It's amazing how captivating he is even though he's not classically trained, blows me away.

Koko3op

well, I've read the comments and for me I don't want to compare this piece of work of Taemin with of Jimin or Kai who has backgrounds of classical/professional dance training. They can be or even I can say, should be better than Taemin on the matter of contemporary style of dance. Even for my eyes, I could easily find some of those things Ola pointed out in his reaction while I was watching this video. Interesting part is that still Taemin mesmerized me by this piece. Yeah It could have been better but the essence of art was there and Taemin is for sure extremely talented and expressive dancer. And I believe Taemin we will see next time trying this type of dance will be different than what we are seeing now. It is always so inspiring for me that he always tries to learn/try something new and expand his world through his music/work. And personally I think I am seeing that kind of aspect relatively lesser from Jimin or Kai compared to Taemin. Of course, I do love their music and dance as well, no hard feeling. Thank you for the reaction video btw.

I LOVE everything you said especially on the second paragraph. Sometimes being moved is something you can’t pin point and deliver with technique.

I enjoyed this reaction very much as I love this performance of Taemin so much. Actually I like the make-up because it gave the whole performance sth. thrilling and dramatic. Regarding his performance: It’s not about technique. Taemin’s dancing is always original, creativ and expressiv. Teamin always gets in touch with his audience, especially with this captivating look in his eyes (the make-up intensifies this), which are his special weapons. He always tells a story with his dancing. If it would be about techniques there a quite a lot dancer with ballet background. Currently I’m watching the k-drama „Navillera“ and a ballet trainer in the movie said „the audience can be impressed by 32 fouettés (referring to swan lake which has 32 fouettés turns, one of the most difficult ones), but they won’t be necessarily moved“. And this is Taemin for me. He dances with his body, heart and soul and that’s what fascinates the audience the most. If you imagine if he had had ballet classes what kind of a dancer he would have been? With regard to Kai: Actually it’s the way around. Kai himself said that Taemin helped him a lot with his debut, MV’s and choreos, as they are best friends and Taemin debutted earlier and has way more experience.

Ohhh great comment Stencil! Yes I think it’s easy to forget how long ago this was actually filmed!

Koko3op

Heyyy Kay! Love this comment, glad you enjoyed what was said and you made a great point about discordant lines, it’s what we pick up on subconsciously and it’s what defines a great dancer to our eyes. That’s very interesting regarding the creative overlap. One one hand there’s nothing new under the sun and you are also subconsciously influenced by those around you too and your staff could do it consciously however with Taemin I feel like he’s usually the one referenced often rather than the referencer? I have no doubt he and Kai or even Jimin have discussed styles and concepts in detail since they are close and offer each other’s strengths to achieve their goals. I’d guess similar aesthetics are bound to happen because of the contemporary genre also. I completely agree, I don’t think the harsh make up and contour were necessary LOL, it looked out of place with the hair tbh.

Koko3op

I think with any artist influence from an outside force is a given. In this performance you can definitely see that he is inspired by something. Whether it be by his friends or videos he’s watched we’ll never know until he says something about it (he follows a ballet artist on his instagram so maybe it was always something he wanted to try?). I also know that this video was made a year and a half to two years ago for his actual NGDA concert before COVID hit. So I don’t think this was influenced by that particular film by Kai but it could still definitely be influenced by previous dances that Kai did prior to that. In regards to the makeup I found that I didn’t mind it as much as I thought I would on the initial reveal. Maybe because most of it was filmed full body so when the close-ups happened I wasn’t as distracted by it? Or it could be because I’ve seen worse. Either way I agree that the make-up could have been less but it could also be him trying something new to show the audience.

Now you know anything Ola will get my attention (<3 you, boo!), but this was definitely something special! I love the comments about creating dance lines, because those lines make the difference in our perceptions of movement, even when we can't pinpoint exactly what makes us like/dislike a performance overall. When you really dig into it, it's very often because there are discordant lines that create breaks in our mental imagery. Of course some people are more sensitive to it, but it's always there. When I watch Taemin, I feel myself looking for the creative overlap with other artists, because I don't know how much of what he does is his own, and how much (inspiration? conceptualization?) comes from the presence of those around him. It's a chicken and egg thing. Case in point: in Film:Kai, we see Kai dance with a female mirrored perception for 'Nothing on Me', and it has a similar aesthetic as here, though I think Kai's went from elegant to elegantly creepy, while Taemin's was ... not dark, but introspective perhaps, with his shadow being an extension of himself rather than a threat. So is there influence between these two friends? I don't know, it just struck me as I watched, and knowing that these two are close makes me ponder. Loved this review and view/take on his considerable talent and just the star quality he brings to his performances. He's one of those people who you're compelled to watch by the sheer force of who he is as a performer. I felt like the makeup was unnecessary for that particular reason: he's already going to grab your attention; the makeup felt like a distraction to me rather than an enhancement. Thoughts?

Yeahh I remember the performance, super iconic. I’d say cos they performed very different songs it’s hard to judge the feelings cos Jimins was contemporary leaning with Lie but when they performed together I think they were pretty much on par although they clearly hadn’t rehearsed a lot. Yes I noticed that with Jimin! Taemin has started to do it a lot too now I’ve noticed loool

Koko3op

From the showdown with Jimin, he was putting power behind his movements whereas Jimin had power and feeling, he is starting to put feelings into his movements, I have heard that Taemin and Jimin are friends and do keep in contact, have you noticed how Jimin likes to stand in fifth position when he’s dancing?

Careen Komarnisky

Oooooo I hear you. How so?

Koko3op

It’s great to see how much he has grown as a dancer from his showdown with Jimin (bias Jimin) 💜

Careen Komarnisky

Yup! It shows the level of talent he possesses. He’s truly limitless because he’s so close to mastering a genre so far from how he usually is.

Koko3op

tbh it’s so impressive bc taemin never had any formal training in modern dance or ballet or any classical training it’s amazing how he can do good enough or excellent in anything he tries as a dancer regardless
