The Overhead

You may or may not realise that one of the most interesting (and time consuming) things about making Game Dev Tutorials are the little micro-jams you do to build a stage for the content.   A lot of work goes into just building the baseline for a video, and each demo often needs to be unique to tell the right story for the video.

For instance, the video I'm currently working on (for next week) will be all about using Inverse Kinematics.

Now, I could just make a shitty looking demo scene and be done with it. Right? But, I think one of the key reasons a lot of folks take interest in the channel is because I talk more about application of concepts in REAL development scenarios.

Which means that, to set the stage for the general story of the video -- I have to frame it in a sort of sandbox of one of those scenarios.

So for this IK video, I'm going to be showing adjusting/correcting animations (notice the mailman's arm clipping through the bag) - and Head/LookAt IK for points of interest in a scene (hence all the little icons)

This meant that I needed to build out a little game demo that contained all those things... So, I needed to build a scene, a character controller, set up a camera and generally do all the work to make it look like a believable game prototype.

It's sometimes fun, it's often frustrating, but overall I think the overhead of the work is worthwhile because it raises the quality of the video.

Anyway, just a little behind the scenes ramblings I thought you might enjoy me sharing.

Thanks again for your support.
