Right now we're in the process of recording final vocals for most of the project! A typical vocal day is pretty relaxed, it'll be about one half talking/eating/hanging out, one half singing. The way my producer, Seth, and I do vocals is:
first: pick a song! Give it a sing once and see if it feels good to sing today. As much as we can, we want to do fun songs on fun feeling days, and sad songs on sad feeling days. We're listening to see if it feels like the "right" day for that song, or if we should try a different one. We also listen for how bright my voice sounds on a particular day. I get a lot of comments on how high I normally sing, but i'm not actually singing high at all, I just have a very "bright" voice. If you listen back through my older music to now, you can hear how my voice has "darkened" over time.
second: Once we've picked a song to sing, I'll sing through each section three times, usually we do a verse or chorus at a time.
third: Seth comps together from the three takes (this means he picks the best section from each take and puts it in the song). In the video you can see me listening to Seth comp haha. I usually let Seth do this without comment because we hear my voice differently. Once Seth's comped, we'll listen through together and discuss if we have a take to beat! (meaning it sounds really good and there's just a few things to change!) or if we're not there yet. Then we keep singing till we have it!
That's a vocal day, wish me luck!
