Hello All!

Anya heavy episode and one that I didn't expect to get so emotional at. I really think she'll need some processing time and a lot of support as well. Similarly to Willow, she has/had a lot of power and becomes a different person when she uses it. Anya needs some self-reflecting and to know what she really wants and who she wants to be! Great episode.

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 7x05

I will always do intros if I have something to say, I promise you that <3

I feel your wanting to put things off as you don't want it to end. Anytime I rewatch Buffy I dread season 7 not because of quality but I just don't want to admit it's coming to an end. I'm the same with Friends I've rewatched both so many times yet rarely finish the last season so I can pretend it never ended.

When D'Hoffryn tells Willow that, "Lloyd has a sketch of it on his wall", go back to the first moments when Spike enters the scorpion demons cave in season 6. There are two images painted on the wall, one of someone with their mouth sewn shut, and another of what looks like someone being flayed. As far as I know it was never officially confirmed, but the potential inference is that there's a scorpion demon, who is able to restore a vampire's soul, and his name is Lloyd. :D

So, Anya, because her boyfriend cheated on her, dealt him an unjust punishment that also harmed many people who had done nothing to her, then agreed to become a demon and spent a thousand years subjecting countless essentially innocent people, or people who had done nothing to deserve what she did to them, to death, destruction, misery and suffering. Then she lost her powers after trying to kill the entire Scooby gang, and somehow got pulled the orbit of said gang, and never showed the slightest bit of remorse for all the horror she caused, then decided to become an evil murderous demon again because Xander, basically, wanted to postpone the wedding. So she tried to kill him, and then tried to get his friends, who were also her friends, to kill him or torture him, but it didn't work. And then it turned out that she now felt bad about unleashing evil and death upon basically innocent people, so she chose to give that up. Well, that's progress. ...There are a lot of connections to episodes from earlier seasons in this one, which is probably my favorite part of it. ... Hi to your cat! 😺

Another great episode that I had been looking forward to for your reaction. It's interesting watching this 21 years later because as I have gotten older I find that I get more emotional watching TV shows and movies - I'm sure many others feel the same way. I love Anya and I have said a number of times that she is one of my favorite characters. It would have been wonderful if she and Xander had gone through with the wedding and had a wonderful life, but that doesn't make for much drama and storylines in a show like Buffy; after all she is/was a demon. Being this is the last season 😥I hope that we get some resolution for those two, as well as all the gang. Everyone has their flaws, but everyone also deserves happiness. Thanks Dak and Scooby!

I love this episode for Anya. Now let's look at the song she sung and why it relates to her character arc. When people think of Anya as a character it's mostly Xander wacky girlfriend not really as a well rounded character by herself. She defined herself as his future wife in the song because she struggled with having a identity of her own after shredding odd and being a demon. This is why she needed to be married so badly and why when that didn't work out she went back to the only other identity that she fit into. If last season was about the character flaws at their worst then I would say this season is about confrontation and trying to overcoming those flaws. Each of the Scoobies displayed their flaws this episode.

Not to mention, they should have been speaking Old Norse anyway, not modern Swedish.

El

Was it really Swedish? I thought it was some weird amalgamation of Swedish and Italian, suggesting some long-forgotten language from over 1000 years ago. Either way, the actors' delivery is very convincing!

StephanieB

Yes, the talisman from Season 4- "Something Blue"- one of the best episodes from the entire series! Love that.

I don't usually care about what the rest of the fandom thinks; everyone has the right to their own interpretations, but this episode always gets on my nerves when it comes to the "Swedish discussion". This is the version that a lot of people like to repeat: "Emma Caulfield (Anya) and Abraham Benrubi (Olaf) were given the Swedish script so they could mime along to the language. But Emma and Abraham went one step further and learned the entire Swedish script (which was written phonetically). Drew said the Swedish scene was much funnier than the dubbed version, so they kept it." I'm a Swede. They did not learn the script, nor did they speak Swedish, other than a couple of barely recognisable words and sentences. It's mostly gibberish. I've also seen that part of the script, and it's written in poor Swedish to begin with. I'm not saying this to throw any shade on the actors. They just had fun with the material, thinking it would be dubbed over anyway. It's the fans who can't let go of the idea that they "did such a good job speaking in another language!" even though they didn't.

Love this episode. Fun fact, that first flashback scene, Anya and Olaf the Troll were speaking swedish. The pronounciation is completely wrong, but well done to the actors for remembering the lines. The writing in this is so good. Lots of callbacks, the lie Xander said to Buffy in the season two finale, the "businesscard" Willow got from D'Hoffryn in season four finally got important. Stuff like this is what makes this show so great.

Jontor11

The relationship between Willow & Anya has had a rocky path from their first meeting in Dopplegangland. In their first encounter Anya used Willow to get her necklace back and, when that failed, tried to kill her. So when Anya started dating Xander, Willow was obvoiusly a little sceptical of her leading up to their fight in Triangle. By the end of season 5 their relationship seemed to have mellowed to the point of true friendship. Which leads to this season where Anya helped Willow when she returned home and this episode where Willow goes to bat for Anya and even goes to the lengths of summoning D'hoffryn on her behalf. And in an episode of callbacks, Willow used the talisman that D'hoffryn gave her after failing to tempt her into being a vengeance demon.

Dyrla

The theme of the episode is that Anya doesn't have much independent sense of self. It goes from her defining herself as beloved wife and rabbit giver, to defining herself as righteous punisher of wicked men, to defining herself in relation to Xander. If you take out the musical scene, it fails to underline the point that she makes at the end, which is that even when she was with Xander and the Scoobies, she wasn't developing her independent sense of self, and that that's going to be her path now. 'On the whole I've had no path' is perhaps the most salient line in her song and the episode.

This episode always gets me when Xander and Buffy are having it out. We get to what I've always imagined would be a huge moment- the exposure of Xander's "big lie" from the season 2 finale- and it just flies by with a minor outburst from Willow... and then we're on to the next. Typical BtVS, giving the audience what we want but not the way we want it! Upon rewatch I can see the bigger point there- Xander is angry with Buffy for making a judgment call about Anya, and in fact he did the same thing when he chose not to tell Buffy about Willow's plan to re-ensoul Angel. Grey areas indeed. I like how Willow is really trying in this episode to protect Anya, particularly considering how she has felt about her in the past. She doesn't tell Buffy right away about where the spider demon came from and then she calls upon D'Hoffryn all on her own. I think after her own"dark" experiences, she has more empathy for Anya. Random notes: In the cold open, Dawn is talking to Willow, telling her to "just act like everybody else"- this is what Anya has been trying to do and in the process she has no idea who she really is. I also like the auditory pun about her original name... she is odd (ahem, Aud). :)

StephanieB

I love how these opening episodes give Anya an actual story arc that doesn't revolve around her relationship with Xander! The show often reminds us of her past as a vengeance demon but mostly does it for laughs, and while we've met the odd character along the way this is the first time we get a proper look at Anya's extensive backstory. It feels bit late now that we're into the final season, but definitely a case of better late than never! What spoils it a little for me is Buffy's decision to kill Anya. Xander isn't always on the right side of an argument but I agree with everything he says here. Buffy might have killed Angel but she only did it when she had no other choice, and not without trying to save him first. With Anya she jumps straight to kill, we don't see her exploring any alternatives or agonising over it, and it just seems a bit cold. It's something that's never sat right with me.

Its an interesting episode this. It has this crazy start, but then kinda builds slowly. Then the ending is a banger. I like the backstory elements, but do feel like some of it could be a bit better fleshed out. Atleast, personally I would have liked to see the part where she properly finds out about the barmaid and makes the potion. I could have done with that as a replacement for the musical reference. The conversation between Xander and Buffy is really good, and I do think its somewhat a character flaw of Xander that he sometimes forgets what buffy has done, or how he influenced that at times. Like with the, lie about what Willow said. But then I do understand that at that moment he can't really see past that. I really liked that scene. Then at the end, with D'Hoffryn and Anya and all. Its a good scene, and when he kills Hallie instead, who was Anya's olders and first true friend. It drives home the point that D'Hoffryn is an evil demon, which we really haven't seen him be so far. onwards and upwards, or rather, downwards to the next. Cos from beneath you it devours. :D PS: Also. aparently Buffy's hair here was her "wedding" hair. cos all Sarah's scenes were shot in the 3 days she had before her wedding or something like that.

You'll probably notice this when you're editing, Dak, but the reason Willow says "I'm sorry" is because she momentarily goes dark and tells the crying girl to "shut your whimpering mouth".

Claire Eyles

The scene with Anya and D'Hoffryn is one of my favourites of the season. The way he just turns on a dime when he says, "Who did you think you were dealing with" is brilliant. He's played so much as the friendly, quippy demon that when he does turn on the menace it makes it all the more frightening. This is a guy you do not want to mess with. Notice as well that when he says, "Hold him back slayer", that Buffy complies. I think even she knows that this is not a demon you just kill that easily. Wonderful performance from Andy Umberger.

Your excitement gets me excited.... I've been planning to watch this show for the very 1st time for years now. I need to just do it. (In the past I've been disappointed in older shows so many times... I'm hesitant).

SUCHHHH a good episode!! I love the part when Buffy says "Remember cheering me on? The both of you. Remember giving me Willow's message? 'Kick his ass'?" and Willow saying "I never said that!!!" It's such a call back to the season 2 finale when Xander had the opportunity to buy Buffy more time... but due to his OWN selfishness, he chose not to. If he had told Buffy that Willow was reattempting the spell to restore Angel's soul, the entire course of the show could have been different. But of course when it comes to Anya, it's not so black and white to him. Despite the fact that I love Xander so much, I think he actually got a taste of what it was like for Buffy to have to sacrifice Angel.

I kinda miss your intros.... I like hearing just a little about the previous episode and what you expect from this episode. This could just be a ME Thing... but when I click on a video I'm never Actually ready to start watching right that second. A 30 second to 2 min intro let's me get my drink and snack and blanket situation.... well... situated. Now I find myself rewinding to the beginning each time.
