Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reaction 3X16

Hello All,

You may have spotted on the last few uploads that my audio hasn't been the best - you can thank my faulty xlr cable for that BUT I feel like i've done what I can to fix it in post. It was this episode that I was most upset about because this is OFFICIALLY my FAV episode of Buffy to date!!!

WHAT AN EPISODE! Willow is my favourite as you all know, so this episode filled me with so much joy! I feel I needed it too, came at the perfect time to pop a smile on my face & get me excited even more for what's to come! Alyson is INCREDIBLE, the way she played both vamp Willow & hooman Willow was fantastic! I explained last episode how I felt sad about how Willow was being treated & this one just continued that BUT by the end of the episode I felt much better. Willow is loved by many! I just feel they take her kindness & helpfulness for granted a lot of the time. Faith is falling deeper into trouble & I haaaate it. The comedy was awesome as always & I already wanna rewatch this episode so BRB!

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support, you're all amazing!

Much love & stay safe out there!

Dakara x

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reaction 3X16

Comments

On the reaction to Willow’s “death” – the episode was a comedy. Though I guess you could explain it that Buffy and Xander had to go from the Bronze to the library and, even once they told Giles, the next scene is a cut – maybe they cried then. We don’t know how much time passed. Regardless, if they had gone for the crying thing, my opinion is that it would have destroyed the comic flow. But, better than my opinion, it was definitely Whedon’s opinion. By this point, I’d think we’d all have implicit faith in his understanding of the workings of comedy and drama. Comedy always requires a greater (or, at least, a different) suspension of disbelief. That isn’t just for comic episodes, like this one, but in dramatic episodes, too. When Vamp Willow attacks our Willow and she says, “What, no more snuggles?” that sort of thing happens constantly in the show – funny quips – also in the more dramatic ones. No way Willow would really say that. Comedy and drama follow different rules. That BtVS can deliver drama mixed with comedy and, even more, brilliant comedy that delivers a great dramatic punch, like this one, is remarkable. If you want to find “flaws” in the logic of the narrative, you always can. (You could do the same with Dostoevsky.) It isn’t those so-called flaws that are the important thing, it’s what they do with them. I think the same applies to Percy’s reaction to Willow. Let’s face it, power and aggression do sometimes achieve results, or we wouldn’t have civilization. I don’t think it was “sending a message” – Buffy is not a message show. It’s a character show. In this particular case, with Percy, it was actually just being realistic (given the fantasy) and it used that realism to bring about comedy. I will say that Cordy asking Wes if he had any plans for the night seemed a minor flaw, done for a cheap joke, and it really didn’t land. One tiny flaw that did not either interrupt or facilitate the narrative – pretty good percentage for an otherwise flawless episode. Boreanaz’s acting, when he saw Willow, was excellent. He’s come a long way since season one.

I totally agree that if Willow was actually dead, the crew would have been a wreck. But, from a writing standpoint, if you put a really intense emotional moment like that only to have it invalidated as soon as our Willow walks up would have felt like another Cordilia "death"

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for exposing the plothole of Buffy, Xander, and Giles not being in utter grief of them thinking Willow was dead. It always bothered me that they just played it out for a comical moment with real Willow walking in. They all would have been destroyed emotionally. Xander mostly as he knew her from kindergarten. He'd be an emotional wreck. I get the shock portion of death, but for me anyway, the first reaction is emotional breakdown. I know unfortunately from experience. That being said, Giles run hug to Willow is one of the best things ever.

Ryan Martinez

Love the line from Giles where he says to Anya 'Don't you try any tricks now, dear'. Must have missed that first time watching

Rhi

cracking episode evil willow is great good job she didnt have a steak in the cell with her cuz cordi almost talked her to the point of spiking herself HAHA speaking of where the hell is SPIKE ??

Ian

I loved the ending. The exploration of girls' relationship to their own power. Willow has this complicated response to seeing a version of herself who in many ways wields more power than she does. Part of her wants to lean in on an ego-less virtuous response, but when she feels the way people respond to it, that makes her want to revel in that power, inhabit it more. So clever to express all of that in that tiny scene.

Bri

They 100% lent into the comedy fun angle on this episode and I think that’s why they didn’t go with a more emotional and dramatic reaction to Willow being a vampire as it wouldn’t fit with the rest of the episode. I do agree though that on a different episode they would all react very differently. As for the end scene I don’t see it as pushing making people being scared of you but more of if you stand up to a bully they stop being bullies.

Collinson

This episode was great. I don’t think I could ever get tired of this show. Great reaction and good observations. Cordelia was hilariously clueless as ever but again, poor cordy always getting the bad end of the groups problems 🙂. As always, Oz is the man. Can bet the next one will be great too, can’t wait.

I think it's probably harder to process your best friend being turned into a vampire than straight up dying. If they'd found her dead body I think the shock would have given way to the tears quite quickly. But in this case it feels like she's turned evil, which is a different kind of grief - probably the thought and memory of her walking around as a vampire is delaying the grieving process somewhat.

Ed Green

I freaking love this episode. Its gotta be one of my favourites ever. Love the evil Willow, and she plays the contrast between both roles so well. It does seem like Willow has had a bit enough of people walking over her and perhaps this will teach her to stand her own a little bit. Best line of the episode: "Also, I think I'm kinda gay." xD

Bart Aansorgh

One of my absolute favorite episodes - Alyson Hannigan knocked it out of the park with this one. As you noted, even dressed in the same costume, they are such obviously different characters. And Vampire Willow is one of the best characters ever. And yeah, I wasn't bothered by the lack of tears - I've had family members die and not really cried for several days, just out of shock and numbness. Anyway, glad you enjoyed this one, looking forward to the next!

Neil Silverman

This is my second fav ep of season 3 next to Band Candy (teenage Rup ftw). My guess is there was no real emotion from Buffy and Xander because we knew it wasn't real, and a lot happens in this episode. You couldn't really take the extra time to show the emotion. Plus Buffy did say she felt numb. The crying could have come later. And shame on you for wanting to see Buffy cry lol

Tim Pierce

Oh, they were just in the shock phase of grief at that point I think. BTW - you missed a minor piece of comedy gold when you paused it there. There's this thing Xander does with the cross that's well worth checking out if you have a spare moment. (Perhaps when you do the edit).

Dave Ford

Hilarious episode. I love the moment buffy stops herself when willow says no mirroring faith's moment when she killed that guy.

Christopher simeon

After Buffy ,Spike & Dru , Anya is my favourite .

Jim Greer

Stayed up late to watch this. Probably the funniest episode of Buffy. Alyson is so great. And I'm not sure if people mentioned it on the other reactions but her and Wesley are married in real life since 2003.

Corey

Yes! Got to get to sleep, but I’ll be watching this first thing in the morning. This is one of my favorite season 3 episodes 👍.
