INTEMPERANCE VIII - Chapter 3, Start Spreading the News
Added 2024-02-19 18:48:38 +0000 UTCI have been more productive this month thanks to having torn my Achilles tendon which has left me unable to work or do much of anything but keep weight off my foot as much as possible. Fortunately, one thing I can do is write, and I have been. We're a little further down the road with this chapter, which is mostly transitional but does contain what I believe to be some good Caydee and Kelvin dialogue. Let me know how I'm doing, like always.
Comments
Mormons are the most heteronormative people there are. And they're hesitant to embrace Celia's pregnancy because they know Jake's still together with Laura and they disapprove.

2024-03-17 13:07:48 +0000 UTCAfter re-reading the last two chapters as I always do, I can't help to get of the feeling of dread after seeing that Jake (or any of the characters for that matter) is preparing for a flight somewhere. After some real-life air accidents that have claimed some notable Rockers in the past, and then given where Matt's Guitar is supposed to end up in this story (but not why)....I wouldn't be surprised... sad that they're gone, but not surprised. That I'm thinking that far ahead of this story with possible arcs, is to me (and I'm sure others) the mark of a great story teller. Thanks Al.

2024-02-29 06:08:15 +0000 UTCIt was just a small tear (but very painful) that seems to have recovered almost one hundred percent. I'll likely go back to work this week. I just walked as little as possible while I was off work, took some steroids, and it gradually got better. It is a very painful injury.

2024-02-27 19:51:42 +0000 UTCDamn! Achilles tear is bad news, bro; did they give you a kevlar repair or cadaver? Whichever, may you recover well & quickly, lest you get too comfortable without work chaos in your life! That was a pretty good chapter: a lot of good background information & you're right, the Kelvin & Caydee conversation was great. Also, that was a nice thawing scene with Jake's mom at the end.

2024-02-23 02:54:53 +0000 UTCThe best answer is from the movie Blues Brothers. When asked what kind of music they played at the honky-tonk, the owner replied, "Both types! Country and Western!"

2024-02-22 00:39:15 +0000 UTCOn the 9/11 flight it was Jake, Laura, Celia, and Pauline on the Delta flight. Referring to the line, “The only reason you and Little Bit and Caydee are still alive is because you decided to take another plane at the last minute."

2024-02-21 03:08:16 +0000 UTCAgain, I think the Best family reaction is a little off kilter. You’re insisting that they have a religious abhorrence of Jake’s marital sitch. The chapter doesn’t portray that. In my lived experience religious family react to unconventional sexual relationships intensely. It’s not understated it’s upfront and ugly. So from my perspective they’re under reacting when taking your comments into account. The scene doesn’t read true emotionally for me. There was no intended anti-Mormon bigotry. I was reading the Best family as relaxed about it due to the lack of shame and ostracism written. Perhaps you’re foreshadowing an upcoming family rupture? I wish I agreed with you about Americans comfort with slavery but I think the history of the Nixon administrations, and all subsequent administrations regardless of party, targeted imprisonment of black Americans for voting Democrat and their ongoing unpaid prison labor disproves it to our ongoing national shame. After all being forcibly relocated, detained against your will, and coerced into working for your captors is like the definition of slavery. Mass incarceration is a real downer when you look into it :(

2024-02-20 19:17:25 +0000 UTCShould be "Johnnie Walker", not "Johny Walker" (I'd have caught the single vs double n, but the ie was a surprise when I looked it up) "G already claimed shotgun and Elija and Neesh" Missing an 'h' at the end of Elijah "neither believing that Paulie and Obie had a chance" Is this meant to be Paulie, or Pauline missing an 'n'?

2024-02-20 03:11:48 +0000 UTCSeveral years ago several of us helped a co-worker and his family move to another house in the same city. Both of my Achilles were very sore for about a month afterwards. Not a great idea for an office worker to be a furniture mover for a day.

2024-02-20 02:05:11 +0000 UTCAgain, most mainstream Mormons in this day and age are very much against polygamy and any form of homosexuality. To say that they might embrace it because their ancestors did is akin to saying that you and I should embrace or at least understand slavery because our ancestors were once in favor of it. I like to think that all mainstream Americans are against the concept of slavery.
Al Steiner
2024-02-20 01:59:32 +0000 UTCHmm…I was thinking they’d have a broader view of throuples bc of their religious history in comparison to Jake’s mom’s heteronormative perspective. It seems you’re implying that the initial hesitation to embrace Celia’s pregnancy by the Best women is religious disapproval/discrimination? I hope the story doesn’t expose them as disliking Celia for being a latina immigrant later. They seemed like such nice people and that would be more sad.
Josh
2024-02-20 01:55:37 +0000 UTCThe Mormon church has prohibited polygamy since 1890 in order to get Utah admitted to the US as a state. In this day and age, their mainstream members (even Jack Mormons like the Bests) do not approve of the practice and are sternly opposed to it, considering it an illegal perversion. There are groups of fundamentalist Mormons who still strive to continue the practice, but they are not part of the mainstream church in any way.
Al Steiner
2024-02-20 01:41:11 +0000 UTCInteresting chapter. I would’ve thought that the Best family would have had more conceptual space for a polygenist relationship with their family’s Mormon roots. Any news on Jake’s NZ home, plane, and possessions? I would’ve thought Jill would be vocal about selling them or something since Jake abandoned them?

2024-02-20 00:40:35 +0000 UTCI first heard the "both kinds" in the blues brothers. Probably predates that but it was my first exposure to the phrase. For me, Country is the tradition of the Carter Family and Hank Williams. Western is the Bob Wills style, which includes drums (the Opry tried to keep his drums off the stage). Look up Jon Langford's Death of Country Music for a great analysis of the contemporary scene (and that was 20 years ago).

2024-02-20 00:32:34 +0000 UTCI don't know that difference myself. That is just what I've heard hardcore country fans say over the years (including my father, who refers to ANY music that is not classic country as "that screaming shit"). I believe I have made my position on country music pretty clear over the course of this tale. It matches Jake's opinion.
Al Steiner
2024-02-19 23:36:14 +0000 UTCAs a dude who is nearly 60, and freaking loves music. If you can define that in such a way it makes sense, I'd be impressed. The stuff that encompasses "Country" these days is genre flattening. May I point you to Hardy's Jack? Edit: Is not in, no extra spaces.
