This makes sense, thanks. That's the difference -- Celia's previous stuff was terrible (from a musical standpoint) and now it's much better. Jake's Intemperance work, on the other hand, was really good -- which explains why National would want more of it. His new stuff, while they admit is still good, is too different for them to be comfortable with it. As one of them pointed out, it's the same reason they rejected signing him as a solo artist. Thanks for clarifying!

Her old stuff was written mostly by the record company and produced to be teen pop, her new stuff is honest and from the heart and well-engineered with good musicians working on it. My intent was to present it as one of those once in a decade CDs that will appeal across a broad spectrum and the record people, as out of touch as I portray them, recognized that as they listened to it for the first time.

I'm completely ignorant of the music business, but why are the National Records bigwigs so impressed with Celia's record, and yet so unimpressed with Jake's? They don't like Jake because it's so different from his Intemperance work, isn't what audiences will expect. But shouldn't it be the same for Celia? She's moved away from bubblegum pop into true artistic development -- why aren't Crow, Acardio, etc. worried that it "won't be what fans are expecting," same as they think about Jake?? I love the plot twist, love that the whole KVA thing started out with Celia worried that she'd be riding on Jake's coattails, when in reality it's the reverse. I just don't understand the rationale.

Then come in characters like Elsa, Gordon and the creeps at National Records - fills the saga out perfectly. I root for the good ones and laugh/cringe at the slimy ones. Thank you for the latest chapter. Off to enjoy it again.
