Lately I have to fight with a lot mood swings so the progress that I've made on the Dondorf deck in the last two, three days was important to get a little sense of achievement.
In all my previous decks the flaps are nearly blank. So it was pretty fun to use this space to design something. The "Poker 52 Cards" text is slightly curved. I'm still not 100% sure if it should be straight or curved. I need to let it sink in first. You can see the half moon curve on top. Like that the whole design is well hidden when the box is closed. Nothing bothers me more when a little piece of the design on the flap protrudes a little on the half moon cutout.
In the last image you see a bit better how the number cards look like. You'll notice that everything is a bit rougher to get the right vintage feeling. The card on top of the 7 of Diamonds is the Joker. This image has been used on tuck boxes and it's also the Jack of Diamonds in several decks. Unfortunately, even after doing some research, I couldn't really figure it out but I think it could be Bernhard Dondorf itself. The founder of the playing card company B. Dondorf. The original Dondorf Joker, "The Jolly Joker" isn't appealing at all to me so that I don't really want to use it for this deck.
It's hard to explain my fascination for the Dondorf playing cards. It's like diving into an almost forgotten world. A journey through time to the beginning of those playing card designs that we still use today, without knowing the origin anymore.
