Also fun fact- this spell the Locklans are trying to use on Gideon to bring him back? This is the same spell the Plumm sisters try to use in season 13 when they use a love spell on Dean to get the book.

Jensen Ackles gets so much (very much deserved) credit and praise for his acting this episode, especially that mirror scene, but I honestly think Jared Padalecki deserves just as much. Portraying the grief and pain and fear of having to watch someone they love go through that kind of memory loss is incredibly hard. If you haven't felt it yourself, its hard to understand just how agonizing it can be, and I think Jared nails it. Not to mention... Sam has no real photos of his childhood. Mary died, John got obsessed... the only one who remembers Sam's earliest memories, is Dean. Dean holds not only his own self in his memories, but he has a piece of Sam as well. Sam's history, Sam's childhood, Sam's past... Dean's memories are the only keepers of that time in his life, so when Dean loses it, Sam loses a piece of himself. Both actors freaking nailed this episode, and the balance of humor and grief is incredible, but I think Jared kind of gets underappreciated here, and his performance is as raw and real as Jensen's, in its own way
