Ted Lasso 3x9 Watch Along

Nate’s devotion to Jade was the tipping point for him. You saw him struggle with his need to apologize to Ted in episode 4 only to be blocked by Rupert. In episode 8, he changed his text to what he thought Rupert wanted. The struggle was there all season. It took Jade to open his eyes. When you lack confidence in yourself (Like Nate throughout the entire series), some can be easily manipulated. Nate listened to social media and, eventually, Sith Lord Rupert. It doesn’t excuse his behavior, of course. That’s been his story arc, so far.

I love the guitar argument. "The guy from Cream" And yes, Stairway to Heaven is absolutely a fingering exercise. Robert Plant said so in an interview about how they wrote it. Jimmy was warming up, just playing scales and such. And Robert wrote the lyrics while he was doing it.

Wild take to think they rushed Nate's arc. I think it's the opposite, they dragged it out so much to the point we just don't care anymore because Nate takes so long to get to the obvious realizations.

I believe that, they decided too late that, it would be the last season. So, apparently that did not leave enough room us to marinate in Nate's villain ARK to go the full distance of chaos, hitting an emotional bottom, abandoning of his hate, moving into remorse, finding love & support, and so on , so they rushed it.

I really dislike nates storyline this season as well. Which is a shame because I actually really like Jade as a character and think they could have done more with her.

I think his redemption was decently written. They just didn’t do enough to justify why he screwed over the nicest man In the world. The writers probably didn’t want to compromise Ted’s character. In turn they compromised their story

Yeah, fair point. I didn't even think of Shandy when I thought about the problems with Keeley's storyline. She just comes in, does her thing, and is quickly forgotten after she's gone. And while I'm not usually a guy that wants to constantly focus on plot plot plot because I generally think it's good if a show takes its time and explores its characters more deeply, in this case, Shandy was obviously not important to the writers as a character in and of herself to explore, nor did she do anything for Keeley's character; you could maybe see something there that Keeley needed to learn to be a boss and that that is sometimes more important than doing favors for your friend, but that is really reaching, they didn't make much a point of that at all.

In Season 2, the writers (and the actor) made Nate waaaay too unlikeable and did nothing to justify or even explain his behavior. The character did a total 180 from lovable Nate in Season 1 and I remembered being so confused and disappointed. I think a lot of people were just too annoyed to care about him. It's the biggest misstep of the show in my opinion.

I think it’s less this season and more how they wrote last season. They didn’t humanize him enough last season so you only could hate him. They needed to show us why he declined better.

I think they wrote Nate’s villain arc too hard for some people so it was harder to get over.

It's funny you mention the new (or in Jade's case, expanded) characters we don't care about, and didn't mention Shandy, because it just illustrates how entirely pointless she was. At least with Zava, he existed to propel Jamie's storyline forward. Shandy, though? She could have been excised from the season and absolutely nothing would have changed, and they could have either tightened things up or used the time spent on her to give any of the more established characters some more to do. Hell, like Keeley. I realize she was introduced in an attempt to beef up Keeley's plot in the first half of the season, but I'd have much rather spent that time just having Keeley and Barbara's working relationship be the focus of that part of the show. Shandy was superfluous.

Ok, first off, I'll say that Kola Bokinni and Brett Goldstein crushed it in this episode. They were great, and I do like the resolution of Colin's storyline even though I have my queer, nitpicky problems with it. But that's mostly personal pet peeves. All in all, it's good they had something like this in season 3. It was very sweet and heartfelt. But to Nate... I think there's a few problems with the Nate storyline. The first is that they went too hard in season 2. They made him too much of an asshole, too easy to write off and hate, it's hard to turn that around for us to empathize with him again, especially since we haven't really seen any repercussions for his behavior. Like it's all been about his personal growth, his journey, but not at all about the people he hurt and insulted. Even assaulting Keeley was played off like it was nothing and was made all about Nate's ego and Nate's insecurities. We needed to see Nate actually face consequences, and not go from manager of a great football team to manager of a great football team with a hot girlfriend, because at the moment it feels like there's no real drive behind him changing and the redemption feels kind of unearned. The second is a structural issue. The reason Nate and Keeley's storylines both kind of fall flat this season is because they're completely separate from the rest of the main cast. We don't care about Jack, or Barbara, or even Jade really. They might all have their moments but when Nate and Keeley are just off doing their own thing and it has nothing to do with what we consider the main storyline around Ted and the team, it just kind of feels pointless and like we're just waiting until that seemingly inevitable time when Nate finally goes back to Richmond and Keeley finally goes back to Roy. Because this show has always been (or at least was up until season 3) an ensemble cast show that works best when the characters are all centered around a central plotline, even if they have their own sidestories every now and then. And the third issue is that they just take too long with everything in this season. Everything is so drawn out, we just lose interest. Even with all the other problems, Nate's storyline could have been fine, if we had gotten here more quickly. Like we have seen him agonize and agonize for like six 50-minute episodes at this point, crawling and inching his way to what we know will be the eventual conclusion of his arc, just get there already. It just all adds up to us just not caring about Nate and his storyline even if we see the vision the writers went for.

Christophe

I was also very disappointed with how they handled Nate’s storyline this season. I feel like they made him out to be the big antagonist but then stopped short of it to a redemption arc, but then they never really did a redemption arc.

This is one of my favorite episodes of the third season, hands down. Roy's press conference is so good. Also: if y'all are not familiar, the title of the episode (and some of the music used in the episode) is from La Cage aux Folles, which is the stage musical (and later film) that The Birdcage is based on. (Also if you guys haven't seen The Birdcage, I highly recommend it. So damn funny.)

Jeff K

the Nate storyline is all about getting peoples approval. You now see him start to realize that is not what love is about.
