Captain Sobel ultimately had a tragic life. He was honorably discharged after WWII. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He attempted suicide in 1970 but he failed in the attempt. The bullet severed his optic nerves leaving him blind. He died of malnutrition in a veteran's home in 1987.

same, i've seen it like 30 times now, but seeing it with people reacting to it is so much better than watching it alone

Always feels like I'm watching my grandfather's stories he wouldn't share when things get gritty.. Thank you for sharing this experience with me. It's always bittersweet watching this.
NOW... Are you going onto The Pacific? Also as for true war story movie/shows. You should check out "The Outpost" It's kinda propagandized heavy but if you can ignore that. it's beautifully done.
PS. My uncle was in vietnam. He was 7th aircav and 17 years old gunner. He later transferred out to the 282nd Atk Heli Co. I am making sure I am writing down his experiences because I know one day he won't be here any more and those stories will be lost to history. I mean.. how insane is it I have a close blood relative that I can get a first hand account about the battle of Ia Drang.
PSS talking about Ia Drang and realisticness. We Were Soldiers is a great movie based on the book "We Were Soldiers Once and Young." Can't recommend both enough.

Can't even begin to think of how many times i've watched this masterpiece of a series, but watching with the two of you has been the best yet.
There's just so much more that we get from listening to the stories of the Veterans and Hero's of the war. My best friend growing ups Grandfather was a young teen in occupied Poland. He fought with the resistance, helped travel Enigma back to the allies, and after successfully making it to Allied territory, made every combat drop as a paratrooper. His stories were told to me as a boy over 20 years ago now, and I'll always remember them like they were yesterday

Thanks for sharing your relationship with BoB with us :) and no we're not planning on watching The Pacific. We feel like certain people are starting to think that we're a war history channel rather than a movie channel and we want to make that more clear for them.

Thank you both for watching BoB, and for sharing your thoughts along the way. I especially enjoyed how you took time at the end of each episode to discuss your thoughts. BoB is very special to me as it ignited my interest in history and is the reason I ended up majoring in history in college. I never fail to cry at the end just hearing how the survivors went on to live their individual lives. I really liked what you both discussed at the end, about how important it is to talk to elders around you, just to hear what life was like for them. It does my head in when I think about how there are adults now who weren't even alive when 9/11 happened. That me at 35 holds experiences and history that an 18 year old today won't be able to relate to.
I'm curious if you plan to do The Pacific at any point. It doesn't get the level of appreciation that BoB does, in part I think because of when it came out (2010), the format of the storytelling (which I won't spoil) and because it focuses more on the brutality of war than the comradery between men, but it is IMO very much worth a watch.

for sure i'm not saying the info will be lost but there's something special about being able to ask any question and hear from someone who knows from recollection

Chad and Arianna, Just watched your full reaction. Very good. At the end you were talking about losing the few remaining Veterans from WWII, and once they have passed it will be difficult to learn about the war from someone who was there. Many organizations have recorded oral histories of the Veterans and they can be accessed in a number of platforms. Google oral histories of WW II Veterans and many sites come up. Enjoyed your reactions.
