Fascist echoes w/ Adam Tooze

Adam Tooze returns to PTO to discuss the key causal factors that allowed fascism to emerge in the early twentieth century and whether conditions that would enable fascism on the interwar model exist today. We also talked about whether describing the Bolsanaros, the Le Pens and the Orbans of this world as fascist may be analytically wrong but tactically effective, and about how close the Latin American dictatorships of the 1970s and 80s are to the fascist model.

Ends really suddenly.....but a really good tour

Such a good episode. Adam Tooze was, as ever, a compelling listen and the central points he makes about fascism and also the current situation are important and penetrating.

Glad you enjoyed it Joan!

Excellent episode listened to much of it on rewind as in could Tooze’s take be as clarifying as it seemed on first listen … nostalgia around talk of fascism is pervasive and unacknowledged and I find also references a repressed longing for the simpler fantasies of the life world of “Modernity” …

Glad you enjoyed it! I was pleased to have the opportunity to return to this theme. I don't think it will happen but would love to see another book on the period from Adam.

This was excellent Alex. The amazing episode on Wages of Destruction you link to was my first PTO. Great questioning as always. Tooze's breadth always impress, touching amongst other things on Ireland and indeed the car as a force against the city and urbanisation. I'm reading Paris Marx"s excellent book on the future of transport and Silicone Valley. In his sketch of the evolution of the car and it's dominance this other potentially significant ideological factor doesn't come up. Thanks

As far as contemporary examples of fascism go, I tend to agree that many of the conditions do not hold. However, in the case of India, this remains an open question to me. e.g. still have genuine mass-based political parties, an organized left. Of course, there is the BJP and its history.

Hi Alex, firstly, thank you (and Adam Tooze) very much for this. I wondered if you could post the name and, if possible, link to the Alberto Toscano essay you refer to?
