Ren'Py Developer Update - May 2022

This month's article is the May developer update. It goes over the changes that  were made to Ren'Py this month, including the dismiss and nearrect displayables, the focus rectangle system, and the new preferences screen. It then covers the three prereleases of Ren'Py, and then finally dives into how to use the new displayables and focus rectangles to create drop-down menus.

As always, thank you for your support.

Ren'Py Developer Update - May 2022

Er, alright! I've never used github for this kind of thing before (I'm still an extremely new programmer/coder and I mostly focus on the art parts, so I'm not even sure where to start with github but I'll do some Googling) but I will look into this, since it's been really affecting mine and other's releases. Thank you!

Sure. I'd suggest opening issues on github when you have details about a problem, especially ones that get narrowed down a bit.

I'd be happy to start providing more details for you if you like, because multiple devs I've talked to have this problem and it's only getting worse for folks each update. (Or so it seems, which makes me wonder if there's just some small thing that's been overlooked. Hmm...) Devices that worked one update now don't work at all, and some are newer. The .apk used to be more stable but now some of the new requirements have created stability issues even when people aren't downloading from Google Play. Almost a third of my reviews tend to be about this and all I can do is apologize to folks and hope it fixes since I've not found anything on my end that seems to help. <:'( I've troubleshot the issues with other devs too with no luck so far. (I've even made threads about it on Lemma) My games aren't graphically heavy or even code heavy (I had wondered for a while if something to do with ATL was causing this?) so me (and other devs I know who are dealing with this) just have no idea why this is happening and were just hoping some later update would randomly fix it. I thought it was time I at least asked though. Thanks a ton for your time!

I'd be very interested in finding about supported devices that are having problems running Ren'Py.

Renpytom

I've heard about the occasional problems here and there, but they tend to be older devices that are no longer supported by the manufacturer. Ren'Py 7.4.5 did slightly increase the minimum requirements, to OpenGL ES 3, but every smartphone that has gone through google certification should have that at this point.

Forgive me if this isn't the right spot to ask or if I've missed an annoucement about this prior: but are you aware of the problems mobile builds are having right now with Ren'py? Is there any planned fix for this in the future? I rely heavily on mobile ports for my games (at current) and I know myself (and many others) are being overwhelmed with the amount of reviews claiming that Ren'py games just aren't working anymore. I have no idea what to do about this problem and it's been really negatively affecting my game catalog, so I was curious about your thoughts and if there are any plans? Thanks a ton for your hard work and time! 💖 These updates all sound exciting btw!
