QUICK NOTES - Dynamic Poses

I get some comments about how my drawings look so dynamic. I sat down a bit and thought about how I draw my stuff, especially when I think about poses. Aside from thinking about the gesture (by the way read Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators by Mike Mattesi), I could break down the stuff I consider into 3 things:

1. Axis - This simplest way to break symmetry is to switch up the angles the body parts are facing. Just by avoiding parallel axes, your pose can look a bit more dynamic already.

2. Perspective - A bit trickier concept especially for those getting into drawing but it adds more to a pose. An easy way to show semblance of perspective is to show the size difference of similar forms. For example, the closer arm is always bigger than the further one. Basically large vs small! Drawing contour lines helps show perspective as well!

3. Silhouette - This is where I think about how I can make the pose look interesting and clear. How far can you push the limbs in making the pose *not* look like a blob?

I always mention this, but knowing anatomy is very important in learning how to make great gestures and poses. Once you know how it works, you can pretty much do anything!
