Enjoy! Next ep next Friday!
I have to agree with the comment from last episode, who the hell directed Junpeis VA? It's just... not working.

Continued season 2 spoilers below.
I guess I just have seen the shibuya incident play out in every anime ever. Euphy slaughtering everyone in code Geass, Orochimaru attacking and killing 2 Kage and an arena of civilians. Pain killing 10's if not hundreds of thousands of leaf residents. Like isn't it just theatre? Act two of a story concludes with the biggest/worst thing imaginable. AOT did it really well by limiting the knowledge of the watcher/reader so the stakes are still able to be raised.
In reference to shibuya. That prefecture is only hosting a population of ~230,000 per Google. So even IF all of the residents were at this party when the meteor n stuff was happening that is still small scale destruction In my opinion. Obviously still awful, but like... I'm expecting sukuna to really get poppin and make some "king of the world" type moves.

I guess you could say certain aspects of JJK are predictable/cliche, but that only applies to season 1. At least that's the way I see it.
Even then, there are moments that break the cliche, like Junpei's death, that catch the audience completely off-guard (a lot of people expected him to join the main crew).
S2 Spoilers below
You can say Gojo getting sealed was a definite, the story couldn't move forward with him around, but the Shibuya Incident as a whole was pretty dark and unpredictable/chaotic.

Oh dang my old comments are catching strays🤣🤣🤣
IDK what it is about JJK that makes me not feel like it's that dark. Maybe that it's predictable? So if I see the darkness coming it feels less... idk shocking?

Lol, that game at the end, in the Juju Stroll thing, is a game I had when I was younger.

You put the swords in the gaps, one person does it at a time, and one will eventually make the pirate pop up. I think it's whoever causes it loses? Can't fully remember though.

I just went back and looked frame by frame to see if that's the case, and it's not quite. Junpei's face on the later frames kinda looks like a frown but it's just a stretching effect that's going across the whole picture. Yuji's face is distorted by the same effect, except with his it doesn't resemble another expression so it's more clearly just distorted.

Awesome! Most sane anime commenter right here LOL! Yeah if you take everything happening as Gege looking directly at you and saying "lol watch this" it makes a lot more sense.

This is my first time watching jjk as well. Majito reminds me of those ai that get better at doing things the more they do them, everytime he fights he takes notes on what didn’t work vs what does and he adapts so I’m guessing potentially he could reach gojos level if he gains enough experience

This is the show STILL being nice and extra friendly... before the pain and trauma, jjk is a trip to a dark place

What do you guys think about the theory that when Yuji looks at someone, he sees them as their soul and not necessarily their outward appearance?

Literally the best reasoning I have heard yet. Period. I can try to approach it in that light and see if I appreciate the swings a little bit more if I'm not looking at them as plagiarism or other tropes but almost satirical, "wink wink, nudge nudge" kinda things. I appreciate the time it took both of you to respond to my silly comment.

The BIGGEST reason why JJK is at least in my top 5 (I wouldn't say favorite, that's reserved for HxH) is because nothing feels off the table. In most shonen there's always this understanding of the formula, things will get worse before they get better but the really BIG fights, or arcs, or deaths or any other major plot point is reserved until at least a couple of arcs in. JJK loves to rug pull, it'll set up like any other shonen and then say "you thought" and completely turn the trope on its head. I understand why people find it mid because this play on tropes doesn't always land but the audacity to even try is refreshing at least. I also think it's an interesting take on morality and a metaphor for what happens when we give in to all of our worst urges, how that can manifest and literally curse us. The ideas in JJK make it compelling enough for me to be invested even if they're not always executed perfectly.

So I found out something today that makes it much better. This show isn't using Japanese mythology as much as Mezzo-American mythology. I had wondered why the show has literally nothing to do with Jiu-Jitsu other than yuji "switching to grappling" and the word "reversal" but "Jujutsu" is a blend of thr myan word Juju (curse) and "Jutsu" Japanese for technique. With that context in mind a jellyfish with those kinds of markings make sense. Also the shikigami Ren is a Mexican thunderbird, and the hounds are coyotes. Even the special grades are Dia de la Muertos designed.
Knowing that it isn't supposed to be emulating Japanese mythology (like a Noragami for example) let's me care WAY less about the details.

I think it’s because of its consistency with high tier action, the author doesn’t really have “favorites” so anyone can be on the chopping block, the pacing of the show is honestly fast compared to older Shonen which newer anime watchers enjoy, and it also has a lot of cool characters who even though they don’t really have that much depth there’s always something distinct about them that’ll like. The powers system is kinda like nen in hxh (obviously nen is more polished) which makes the different types of cursed techniques interesting.

Imagine if they decide to watch both parts of Thunderclap and/or all three parts of Right and Wrong back-to-back. That would be wild.

I think the reality of the show is for sure dark but it usually doesn’t feel that way especially with this first season. The way they insert funny moments and also the show being very action heavy can negate us from seeing how dark it really is.

I think Yuji's declaration directly ties back to his response to Junpei's question last episode, about whether or not he'd kill a curse user. Yuji would never have considered killing an option, but at that point his beliefs hadn't been tested yet (he's only been a sorcerer for a little over two months, and he spent most of that time training with Gojo).
But right now, even if Mahito was a curse user instead of a cursed spirit, Yuji is 100% ready to "kill" him.

Sad fact: towards the end of the opening, when the screen glitches after focusing on Yuji and Junpei, you can see Junpei's smile turn into a frown.

Personally, I believe Reverse Retribution refers to Junpei's fate (like how Small Fry refers to Junpei himself). Rather than join Yuji at Jujutsu High, train with his technique to become stronger, and eventually avenge his mom (what would normally be expected), he's immediately killed off before getting that chance.

Question for the group. Don't jump me. As a person who has a long history with anime I don't understand why people's favorite is JJK. To be clear. I see nothing WRONG with JJK, it just seems like another run of the mill Shonen. The plot isn't particularly unique, the characters aren't particularly deep, and while the animation is good, Mappa does good work on all their stuff. Nobody knew about JJK until a powerhouse anime studio picked it up and animated it.
What are the reasons why yall consider it your "favorite anime"

I have always felt that to know the shape of your own soul is to know your own sense of self. Most people don't have a great catalyst for that introspection. Itodori does. He is able to identify the sense of self of Sukuna. To know what one is, you must first inquire as to what it is not. He may not have a complete grasp on the shape of his soul, but he is more advanced in it than a normal person or even grade 1 JJ sorcerers.

A lot of people say that the characters (especially yuji, nobara, gojo) feel like they should be in other types of anime and were thrust into this super dark show. Born to shoujo forced to shonen.

Mahito previously mentioned to junpei he's a curse born of human resentment/negativity (when he also was talking about jogo and the others)
I'm not sure your feelings on mahito, but you WILL come to LOATHE his sadistic ass, because he does truly embody the emotions he was born from!!!!

Yuji and Sukunas souls are combined/combining, which gives yuji the innate ability to perceive souls since he constantly has sukunas attatched/touching his. So when yuji attacks mahito, with his/sukunas cursed energy, the cursed energy can reach mahitos soul. ALSO ALSO ALSO NEXT EPISODE IS SO COOL!!!!!!

Hey Kenny just a heads up, mahito in a previous conversation with junpei already said he was a human curse, one born out of the hatred and resentment humans have for each other…so yes you are right :)
