"Low-built and long, Hawking held a passing resemblance to an earthly trilobite. A trio of crystalline eyes pulled in light from all directions, delicate optical tissues teasing the meaning out of every photon. His armored body was carried on dozens of jointed legs. But where trilobites had three sections to their insect-like bodies, this alien had five. And where trilobites were dim-witted creatures haunting the floors of ancient seas, Hawking’s ancestors evolved grasping limbs and large, intricate minds while scurrying across the lush surface of a low-gravity world."

2025-02-09 06:31:41 +0000 UTCAs a somewhat demented collector of trilobites (specimens of about 800 species) I am delighted to see a trilobite-inspired alien! I must, though, protest the description of trilobites as 'dim-witted'. They had enough wits for their ecological role and persisted for 250,000,000 years or so which is about 250 times as long as we modern humans have existed and far longer than we are, at our present rate, going to survive. Brains are over-rated! I do thank, even they are the source of the 'dim-witted', the patron who commissioned Hawking.
