Friendly neighbourhood shapeshifters

Half of these have been on view on my Twitter but the rest are new!

It'll become evident later on in the story, but most of our readers know that our serpent baby shares Jack's ability to shapeshift.

Neither of them is capable of speech in their beastly forms, so showing their intentions and emotions needs to happen through expressions and body language.

Clothing is also an issue, as it doesn't magically reappear on their backs whenever they change forms. I felt it was the most fun way to explore this ability and force them both to find ways to stop them from humiliating themselves in public. It also means it's a very well kept secret and requires a lot of planning to pull off without rousing suspicion.

Jack's lucky to have a friend like Omar, who provides him with huge amounts of shirts, trousers, shoes and hats stashed all over the city to keep him in working condition and stop the Watch from arresting him for indecency.. Omar's also one of only three people who know about Jack's ability in the whole city.

Our little serpent girl will spend majority of her time in Jack's hovel. She's more or less a prisoner in the rookery, locked away as Spikes isn't fond of the idea of letting her out to explore the city despite the fact she's able to pass herself off as a human. How long that'll last though.. We'll have to see!

Good question! Short answer is yes. He can pass decently off as a rat, but naturally rats can't have green eyes for example. But you rarely see them for longer than three seconds on the street. He's meant to have a number of pitfalls though, that a) make it difficult for him to use his skill too often and b) characteristics that make him stand out in daylight. He relies on blending in the crowds, during times when people's attention is occupied by something other than a large red dog. It's no different to a pickpocket at work in that sense, except he's trying to pluck out information. The form that probably looks the most natural out of them all, is a red tom cat. And I can say he's not too fond of cats.

Do residents of Tistow become perplexed after looking at Jack in canine, or any other animal form? Because you draw him with a face with a trace of human characteristics.
