Helldivers 2 is loosely based on Starship Troopers. A lot of people like to draw some political commentary from it, but I'd say it's indeed not meant to be taken seriously. As the requester noted, you're part of the elite unit called the Helldivers and you're sent out on missions against those big alien creatures and robots in order to secure objectives and resources for Super Earth. The entire game is needlessly over the top, and so is the fanbase. From what I heard, it's a great deal of fun.
