Micah Spiese

Huge 40k nerd ever since my dad bought me Space Crusade back in the early '90s. I'll try to explain a few things. The Enemies in this short: The first batch are humans who have fallen to the worship of the Dark Gods (Chaos), this particular sect worships Tzeentch who is the Chaos god of change, intrigue, sorcery and who plots away in the background trying to manipulate circumstances to its own benefit. The next group with the bioluminescent blood are Tzaangor's which are sort of abhuman mutants who have been influenced over successive generations of worshipping Tzeentch. The final enemy is a sorcerer of Tzeentch, a creature capable of using the Warp (see magical realm fuelled by emotions and actions of all living beings, also used by 40k factions for faster than light travel and communication). It uses the warp to stop time and prevent the Marines from attacking the statue which was dedicated to Tzeentch and features a "Lord of Change", a greater Demon of Tzeentch. Why was stuff going in reverse sometimes: The planet the short takes place on is so mired in warp activity due to the cultists that the warp has an easy time breaking through, and due to its chaotic nature it sort of messes with reality and makes stuff happen that shouldn't be possible. From pieces of paper un-burning back into reality to gravity turning itself upside down halfway down a hole, to other examples in other stories like doors leading to whole other parts of a city, blood raining down on people, the walls being made of flesh, buildings being made of the bones of a slaughtered population of a world etc. Why did Titus manage to win when the other Marines didn't: He has some sort of natural resistance to Chaos, his mentor Mataurus who is also in the short mentions that even from the first time he met Titus as a young child and recruited him into the Ultramarines that he showed no signs of fear. The Tzeentch sorcerer seemed to be feeding on the fear that the different marines had, Mataurus seemingly fearing that Titus could fall to chaos, which is why in his demon induced nightmare vision Titus starts to grow horns and generally look a bit more evil than Marines usually do. Titus potentially falling to Chaos is a major element of both Space Marine 1 and Space Marine 2. But when the demon tries to perform the same move on Titus instead of finding something to use against him all it finds is that same fearless child, a child that was weaponised by the Imperium and turned into a walking tank that would quite happily wade through a planets worth of enemies if it meant doing his duty. So the demon panics as Titus turns the tables on it, and it loses its concentration on stopping time which allows Titus to show it a magic trick involving turning one sorcerer into two half sorcerers. Are there any other bits of 40k media worth checking out: Yes, the next best in terms of overall quality is "Astartes" by Syama Pedersen, who did in fact work with Blur Studios on developing this short and appears in the credits. Syama produced the Astartes project almost entirely on his own to show off his skills, and he was eventually contracted by Games Workshop to help with their animations before moving on to Blur Studios and now Digital Bones Studios. There is also "Helsreach" by Richard Boylan which is an adaptation of the 40k audiobook by the same name. It amounts to a 2.5 hour movie in terms of overall length when all the parts are added together and tells the tale of Grimaldus, a chaplain of the Black Templars chapter of Space Marines, when he finds himself tasked with defending Hive Helsreach on Armageddon. Richard Boylan was hired by Games Workshop and still works for them as a director on their animations. Hope this helps.
