The Thing Is Done!

Thanks so much to everyone for waiting for this one. It has been a serious journey to get it ready and released.

Next vid is already planned. It's about music. It won't be more than an hour long. I'm confident it'll go down a big treat. More to come about it soon!

What a wonderful thing to hear! I'm delighted the video was able to spark such a conversation between both of you! Say hi to your mom, from me and welcome to this little community!

I watched this video with my Mom a couple days ago and had an incredible time! So incredible that I just had to become a patron to support your work. She was an early user of Facebook and had SO many stories to tell as we were watching the first third of the video. We would frequently pause to discuss her experiences in the 'golden age' of Facebook, it was great! I learned so many new things about my mom, like the fact that she unfriended people for playing Candy Crush too much. She HATED that game! She point blank told me that she lost respect for any of her friends that spent too much time playing Facebook games. As we got further into the video, our discussions got progressively deeper. The way you kept your points logical, concise and relevant meant they served as great fuel for discussion. We spent more time talking with the video paused than we did actually watching it! I think that's the highest praise I can give. This video wasn't just entertaining, it was genuinely thought provoking. I know it will change thousands of people's lives for the better, and that's something you should be proud of. My Mom and I both decided to quit social media around a year ago, I gave up Twitter and Reddit and she gave up Facebook. Since then our lives have improved significantly and our bond has deepened. It's crazy how much of your day you lose scrolling through whatever algorithmic feed you're putting in front of your face. And it's also crazy how easy it actually is to talk to people when your entire social strategy isn't "walk up to someone and show them memes on your phone". Anyway, this is getting long so I'll close it out. Thank you so much for all of the care and effort you put into your work. Know it doesn't go unappreciated!

This was incredible!

Yeah, I know it's a bit of a doomer take on things, and I'm sorry for that. I don't like being pessimistic, but I do find it hard to imagine a future in which humans keep paying each other money to do stuff that can be done more cheaply and easily with machines, often in ways that are not just on par with humans but actually superior. It might wind up being really great, if we are able to shift into a sort of post-work economy, where a large percentage of people are free to simply live their lives without working and still get their needs met, but it seems to me that we probably should've figured that bit out before we built up machines to this degree. It seems to be taking an awfully big risk, just hoping that the machines are going to crack that nut for us.

I didn’t see a comment like this on YT. It may have been automatically flagged for some reason. (YT sometimes does that)

It was something like: 2:39:39 Have you not heard of Udio and similar platforms? AI is destroying ALL forms of creative expression, or at least it is devaluing creative skills to the point that there won't be much reason for humans to continue practicing them in the near future, aside from simple curiosity or making some form of rebellious statement. Whether people realize it or not, tools like NotebookLM have already made podcasts pretty much obsolete, as you can just feed it some notes and it will generate a script and pretty convincing vocal dialogue. And once ChatGPT o1 and similar models get video avatars, I'm afraid the video essayists of the world are going to have a hard time competing as well. I love these sort of deep dives into really important topics, but honestly, who on their right mind is going to bother working for months on a three-hour video when there are dozens or even hundreds of other channels on the Internet effectively live streaming the same kind of content 24/7? And I'm not talking about crap, I'm talking about quality essays: thought provoking topics presented with nuance, humor, sound reasoning, valid references, relevant B roll footage, impeccable audio, perfect visuals, and all the usual markers of quality video essay content, just generated via AI in a matter of minutes or hours (or perhaps even on the fly) instead of through a lot of human labor and time. And that's just for the good stuff, while most casual consumers of digital content will prefer to binge on the absolute avalanche of garbage being generated by "creators" who won't bother wasting compute cycles on boring stuff like logic, fact checking, basic plausibility, etc.

I just posted a reply to the pinned comment on YouTube, and it seems to have disappeared. I guess I'll repost something to the same effect here if it doesn't show up later

Thank you!

What manner of music making will you be covering?

Hope you will be able to rest after this....considering the amount of heavy stuff you have had to watch and read

Sorry to ask here, but could someone share an invite to the Discord? I've connected through Patreon but it's not showing up in my servers. More importantly, this was an incredible video. I keep writing and re-writing my thoughts here so I guess I'm still processing the information, but I cannot imagine how much work this took, everything was put forward with such care and attention to detail.

A German class I took in college had a writing prompt on a test where we had to talk about our relationship with technology, and I wrote about how I thought Mark Zuckerberg should be executed. This video really makes me wish I could see that through.

Looking forward to watching this when I get home tonight!

highclass_lady

Congrats. This is a masterpiece

I want to type all sorts of things but I best first watch it. Well, just this - if the sheer length is a measure of the zeal you put in, this should cause quite an impact. I hope so at least. Thanks for all that you do.
