First Hour of My Upcoming Facebook Video

Hey all,

I hope you enjoy this first hour of my upcoming video, which makes up around 40% of the overall runtime.

There are one or two minor mistakes I've not yet corrected but please keep an eye out and let me know if you spot any new Jank I'm not aware of.

Known Jank:

Apart from that, with a video this long, the thing I'm trying to be most mindful of is not being boring or repetitive. It's tricky given how many different topics the overall video ends up touching on, and how much 'setting up' I need to do.

Regardless, if you do feel something is quite dull, let me know. Right now, I've left in everything and I might easily cut some of it before the video hits prime time.

Thanks! Once again, hope you enjoy!
Martin

"If the product is free, then you are the product." I don't think Facebook is providing a service to its users anymore. I think Facebook users are providing a service (advertising dollars) to Facebook shareholders. Facebook might have been about friends sharing information and content with each other in the early days. It isn't anymore. As Martin has shown us, that change happened remarkably quickly. We still have more than a decade to go in Martin's retelling before we get to the present. Strap in, folks - thanks for the ride, Martin.

I think it's a brilliant juxtaposition to discuss facebook in this deeply personal way, presumably as a setup for examining the absolute automated algorithmic sewage pipe it is nowadays. Very excited to see the rest!

that's interesting - i became premium user on youtube because most of the content there that i watch is created by people like you; knowledgeable about their niche and creating content based on something they needed to say, rather than just overproducing BS ... that being said, I'm quite unhappy with recommendation algorithm, shorts, and price hike and was pondering of canceling youtube - not out of necessity but out of the principle. would you mind roughly sharing your thoughts with us if premium youtube is significant portion of your income, compared to patreon, and would it be feasible to move to patreon more? if i'd move back to non-premium model that would surely include adblockers so such revenue would be gone for people i prefer to follow... so i am not sure should i turn it off yet or not...

Maybe run a competition? Who finds the most wins their own personal shrine to Zuckerberg.

I'd say this video will easily have more Easter eggs than any other. Couldn't help myself.

This is a depressing ending: makes me wonder how you are supposed to keep a service good and beneficial for the users while keeping stock holders happy and profits up. You would hope providing an excellent service would be enough in its own right. But it looks like having good profits, good service, and keeping it all free is the impossible trio. Still it looks like there could have been a way Facebook reasonably avoided this.

I like the sound of an ad-free experience for Patreon subscribers... I myself stopped posting videos to YouTube when they decided to put ads on my videos (see https://www.ljova.com/2020/11/monetize-dis/ ) but i was never interested in a YouTuber following and all associated shenanigans.... either way, I post my videos to Vimeo and link to them from the socials...

Ljova

oh, are you able to reduce the number of ads on your end? I didn't realize that's a creator option.. (to all of you creators who've had me watch an ad every six minutes.... waaaaaa)

Ljova

I for one am excited for a feature length video.

Warren Garabrandt

In saying that, the ads can be a pain if you're not blocking them. Maybe there a chance of an ad-free version available directly to patrons? 😏 I wouldn't want to put any pressure on for that, though, it's entirely up to him how he wants or needs to distribute his work in the end

Aaron Bolger

I agree two hours is long. Honestly, I'm excited by the idea of it being that long. Martin here is pretty good at creating natural stop points so it's easy to break it up and watch it in parts. Selling it to someone like Netflix might grant a bit of revenue and remove the ads, but it locks the video behind a new paywall instead, so very few people will see it in the end. That'd be a big loss

Aaron Bolger

Don't worry, I'll be significantly reducing the number of ads on the vid because I hate the way they interfere with the flow.

Tantacrul

wow, Martin, is this really going to be over 2 hours? I wonder if you could sell it to Netflix or something? I can't say that I've ever watched a YouTube video that long... especially considering that there'll be ads every few minutes..
