wow that window puzzle is so neat when you think about it, because it’s not really the *window* that teleports you but the cloud of smoke itself acting like a portal to the cloud in the other window. it would be really cool to put that puzzle in a game and have a player try to blow the smoke further into the room and corral it somehow haha

Dorian Doran

"A 13 is like a nat 20 to Caldwell" Truer words have never been spoken

Cristian

Sweat on food is generally unwelcome, I feel 😜

Dr. Bearkele

salt and vinegar chips (crisps) are my favourite

Squishy, Pawpaw's Brushtail Possum lover

Clearly Crissy is Australian, here "crisps" and "fries" are both called chips.

Squishy, Pawpaw's Brushtail Possum lover

POTATOES HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING SWEET! I could not agree more. Potato heads unite!

SWEAT POTATOS ARE NASTY

Jaydon

I love the trap enthusiasm <3

Serenity4Jane

Americans don't cook chips at home?? What do they eat burgers with?

Mindolluin

Ngl balsamic on fries sounds delicious tho

1man2hands

I'm sorry, Emily's implication that she's never had frozen french fries blows my mind like yeah they're generally bad but some are good and regardless everyone's had em

1man2hands

My 3.5 character is level 12 with an AC of 53 😳 3.5 is crazy. Also there are class tiers, like some classes are just a lot better than others.

Taylor Schult

Why is no one talking about the true gem that is murph running us through this wizards tower filled with bad baby unseen servants?? Thank you Murph, already know where to put this in my campaign 🙏🏽

Julio Ortiz

Dice christ wants Emily to be a spellcaster.

Freen

Balsamic on fries is amazing

I’m a bit late to the party but I’m Scottish and you can get a bag of chips (fries) from a chip shop. They are soggy, caked in salt and vinegar, and chunky. So, it’s pretty on brand for Chrissy to want a bag of fries haha

Nah Jake I got your back, sweet potato fries are an unnatural defiance of god

Noah Smith

Bit late to the party but Birds Eye in Aus have a sea salt and balsamic vinegar frozen chips pack and that's the shit. Limited edition so we've stocked up.

So finally listened to the short rest a few day late and then this article came out today! Crazy timing! https://www.ign.com/articles/dnd-6e-announcement

Whitney Peterson

“Murphs Tomb of Inconveniences”

Dj Michaelopolis

I agree with Jake, sweet potato fries are abhorrent.

Penny Garbo

"POTATO HAS NO BUSINESS BEING SWEET" thank you jake for your bravery... i'd take a terrible stale cold maccas fry over that strange sweet potato heathen of a fry any day

kimbo ★彡

Caldwell, I salute you for the wee beaut that is Chrissie and his commitment to chips of all denominations. If you want that true to life Scottish pronunciation however, 'chips' is pronounced the same as 'chaps' (adding an extra element to the guy/dude/lad discussion)

I know I’m a couple of days late but they actually recently started talking about new books and overhauls to things in 5e in like 2 years, so people are thinking 5.5 might be coming around 👀👀👀

Joshua Brint

Came here to say the exact same thing

Lara

balsamic on fries is delicious! delicious!!!

Natalie

Muddled blueberries + balsamic vinegar as a dipping sauce for fries is delicious

Being an Australian, when Chrissy said someone burned chips I 100% knew exactly what he was talking about. Also in Aus fries and chips are just called chips.

Okay so my wife makes carrot fries with some combination of honey, balsamic, and Sriracha and they are absolutely bomb

Gabriel Wykle

Along with a bunch of other people, I'm also going to recommend Pathfinder 2e if you all are considering a more crunchy system. I've been really enjoying it and while it's crunchier than 5e, it's much more streamlined than Pathfinder 1e so it might be a good next step from 5e.

Jess Wagoner

we stand with Jake - sweet potato fries are ass

Adam Sutton

Plenty of people in the comments are mentioning Pathfinder, which I think is a great idea for a more complex system! One big selling point - Pathfinder 1e is basically D&D 3.5 with updates, so it would be easy for Murph and Emily to pick it up. It does a lot to fix those empty levels Murph mentioned in the episode too. I'd love to hear them give it a try!

Jake is right. Sweet potatoes are not it. (They do smell better than regular fries tho imo)

Morgan Croft

I use malt vinegar instead of balsamic, and I learned a while back not to put it directly on the fries, as it'll make a soggy mess. I pour ketchup separately and mix in a bunch of malt vinegar into that. Same end result, but you're left with a crisp, dry fry.

Gumbercules

Thumbs up for Caldwell vocabulary

d'ante' breaux

Omg yes balsamic is FANTASTIC on fries!

Nico Madden

I agree with Jake. Sweet potato fries are not good

Evan Cordero

Go home bro

Frank Mastromatteo IV

It’s good to see intellectual, like-minded folk

Frank Mastromatteo IV

In N Out fries are abismal

Frank Mastromatteo IV

Yeah I totally agree with this. Pathfinder 1e was my first system and now after 2e and dnd 5e it seems almost unplayable because of the needless complexity and crunchiness. I've listened to a couple pathfinder 1e podcasts and they're definitely less fun to listen to because of all the time the rules take and the seemingly unimportant and slow leveling. 2e is completely different and way more customizable as a player.

Paige Wirth

If you need bad fries just go to In N Out, completely inedible

Scott Specht

#ImWithJake

Nick

Y'all never had good sweet potato fries and it shows.

Courtney F.

Will donate my denim vest to Murph immediately

As a Potat-ho myself, I have little to comment on the fries discussion. As a Potat-ho myself, I have little to comment on the fries discussion. HOWEVER if y'all want a fun 3.5 based game that I think needs both a revival, and also is a solid system where every class has interesting options is the World Of Warcraft rpg. Especially with NADDPOD's 3/4ths knowledge of Warcraft Lore experience from 8-bit Book Club.

Whichendup

Not sure if it's balsamic but the vinegar you have on 'fries' from the chippy is delicious. If they're not a combination of soggy and crispy, I'm not interested

Emma

Absolutely raging about the oven chips slander as a British person. They're crispy, greasy and great in a butty!

Emma

doesn’t suffer from the same traps as 3.5 or pathfinder 1e when it comes to making a character ( the classes are all way more balanced and you’d have to try really hard to make a charater that doesn’t work)

With talk about maybe graduating from 5e to a more complex system, I’d like to recommend looking into Pathfinder Second Edition. My playgroup recently made that transition, I’m the GM, and it’s been a blast. The big benefits off the top of my head are that there are so many more clear systems in place for DMs (instead of relying on abundant homebrew like 5e), martial classes have hugely improved combat impact and aren’t just “i swing a sword” until level 20, and the system

Jake, I stand with you. I strongly prefer regular fries over sweet potato fries. Fries have no business being sweet!

Carlos Blandino-Lopez

Oven baked fries are absolutely not soggy and sad they're wonderful!!!!

Nour

Team Caldwell Oven chips

Hrishi Venkatesh

Can't believe Jake is getting razzed for his completely reasonable chip (fries) opinions. I also do not understand the hype around sweet potato fries, chips are savory, not sweet.

Eddie V

I agree, and I actually like sweet potato fries. They're just two completely different things. One is not a acceptable substitute for the other. If I want salty, greasy-- I go with fries. If I want sweet, substantial-- I go with sweet potatoes.

Lori P.

Honestly, a little bit of pickle juice on fries is great. It's the only way I can eat the ones that are a little overcooked.

Lori P.

Chrissie IS a true Scotsman - he loves oven chips and, like me, has burnt them more times than he cares to admit

Not only am a potato-only chip/fry head like Jake, I absolutely live for that balsamic and salt dressing on them. Absolute sog hog over here 🍟 🐷

Calum Gillies

You should check out Pathfinder 2e, you can get really customizable with that. Also, I would suggest 1st edition Pathfinder over 3.5.

Leah Stigale

Honestly if you wanted to play a game in a more complex 3.5-esque system, you should give Pathfinder 1e a shot! I've played it a bunch recently with some friends and its a lot of work but there's a lot of options for optimization and builds that I think you all might like

faizaan723

you've heard of pickling your dice....but have you tried....pickling fries and making jake eat them?

ursa

I love 3.5 please do a oneshot!

K

Yep, chips are chips. Both are chips. Completely understood everything! - Fellow Aussie

Vic

Alrighty I have put steak fries in the oven for numerous dinners and they are delicious with some nice Cajun seasoning. It is still an hilarious discussion to have on the short rest though

Nesve Fowl

If I was asked if I wanted some fries...and was given sweet potato fries? The night is ruined.

FusRohNahSon

You can fry up fresh tortilla chips really easily too! My girlfriend stupefied me the other day….

Wit & Whimsy

Oh yeah, love balsamic vinegar on sweet potato fries! Best Balsamic vinegar is kowalski brand fill your own bottle

Cheese of the Lake

I'm Australia "chips" are both packet crisps and oven cooked chips and we eat both regularly!

Christine Winthrop

"Steak fries that go in the oven". In Scotland they're just known as oven chips.

Callum Clark

Balsamic on chips is the bomb, as is worcestershire sauce but that could just be a kiwi thing 👀 chip freaks unite

Oh man the amount of sweet potato fry hate is blowing me mind!! I usually agree with Jake on most things, but man I was totally on team SP fry. And there are definitely trash fries out there, and when I eat one I am so disappointed. It is such wasted calories and leaves me angry

Mr. Satan, the World Martial Arts Champion and the Earth's protector

Sweet potato fries are horrible. Jakes right

Kailie Hind

Emily why would you curse me with the thought of soggy balsamic vinegar fries

Im fully with jake on this one fuck a sweet potatoe fry potatoes have no business being even remotely sweet

Gavin Owen

"I DIDN'T SAY ANY POTATO WOULD DO" Has me rolling fr Jake ded

Absolutely agree. They shouldn't even count as fries. They should barely count as food.

Crankysister

Came to the comments to say the exact same thing! If you are out of malt, you go for balsamic.

Crankysister

Jake is completely correct about sweet potato fries. Definitely the worst way to serve sweet potatoes.

Pathfinder, crunchy as a binch with a billion options!

Vie.

If you guys come back to Seattle try Dick’s burgers’ french fries. They’re the soggiest, thinest shoestring fry in the country. Believe it or not, they’re actually good.

Nick Asmussen

In Australia we call both crisps and French Fry's chips. I suffered no confusion :p

Joel Boyd

You're telling me you never had fish and chips and couldn't find malt vinegar, instead using balsamic?

Mason Shucart

Balsamic vinegar boys represent. Its good on Margherita pizza. Highly recommend

Camden Holck

Literally did it last night. A lil BV goes a long way, so dont over do it

JBeev

Balsamic on fries is fantastic. You can use ANY vinegar! 😁

Brandon Wiens

I need to know Jake’s opinion of cajun fries

Tara Boyle

I totally agree with Jake here. Sweet potato fries belong in the trash.

clevername

You just can't say blanket statements about food in earshot of people who like to razz.

Stovepipe Flange

Jake is right sweet potato fries are trash.
